The only way they can make the newscasts better is by having each station serve their respective markets, not this consolidated nonsense.6 points

Still better than WJW's "ei8ht is News" period from around the same time-- they didn't constantly repeat the moniker at every turn.2 points

It sounds like he is preparing for retirement by being sure to transfer his knowledge across the group. I don't think he will have any on air role going forward. With his experience, it is well deserved.1 point

1983 per the copyright… interesting to see Dave Courvosier at 12 - I’m used to seeing him on Vegas… Also, the Food Horizon’s ad (2nd ad in after Roberta droning on about her 3rd mobile home from Farrell’s) music sounds like something a smaller market station might have used for their own local news at the time. Little did we know that WTSP would become a sister station to KPNX in 1995. Not to mention the switch from ABC to CBS to go with Gannett buying Channel 10. A connection to Jineane Ford right there. Both KPNX and WTSP are owned by Gannett (now Tegna)1 point

Since all the episodes are available on-demand lately it's probably more that than anything rather than CBS mob-tacting them; at the end of the day it's yet another 'if you haven't seen it, it's new to you' syndicated package that fills an easy hour and captures the audience which doesn't want to deal with Freevee. And it certainly isn't original content in 2024. What is CBS going to do, take away their Dr. Phil reruns? No, not the Dr. Phil reruns from 2018 we air at 4am anyways that OWN and Pluto also air and will clog Merit Street soon, please don't take those.1 point

A call sign change (which won't happen to begin with) won't change the fact they're stuck with a standalone AM they can't sell, with demos older than dirt.1 point

Mission's stations were pulled from Dish in early January 2023, so 54 weeks have passed between the start and resolution of the dispute. Mission's dispute with DirecTV began three months before the Dish dispute.1 point

KTVN 2 News in Reno just revealed a new studio and the new (current) CBS O&O graphics and is known on air as 2 News Nevada. https://www.2news.com/news/ktvn-unveils-local-news-brand-update-new-studio/article_a617591c-b950-11ee-8b11-4398a48a02bc.html?1 point

Here we go ... KRCR ... Northern California's legacy snoozefest ... now has three solo anchors for their evening newscasts. Glenn Cassie has been added there. So, one anchor from 5-6 that retires every few years and then comes back, one from 6:30-7, and then one that does 7/10/11. Either they're prepping for a third retirement for the 5 anchor or they have money to spend. A better idea would be to pair up and have traditional two anchor newscasts because the 6:30 person is very green.1 point

WKBT has had them for over a year. They debuted them when they debuted Ross Overdrive in 2022. It was a test to see if their VP of news actually liked this vision or if he wanted to switch back to the old look. (I worked there during this transition.)1 point

I have so many questions: 1) Does he always do the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of every newscast? If so, Sinclair says you're hired. 2) Happy Festivas! LOL jk. -- Matt1 point

At the 23:57 mark of this NewsActive3 retrospective, a new candidate for one of the worst-- an early edition opening from WTWO Newschannel 2 where the entire opening is in song, and there is no announcer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8yyfpxhpNM1 point

Here are some bad news opens from small market TV in Canada... "Primetime Local News" from CITL-TV/CKSA-TV in Lloydminster, Canada (a city that sits on the border of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan). This station could use a new brand like "Border News Now" or something... Southwest TV News, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. This news operation came about after the closure of the only local TV station in town, CJFB-TV, in 2002. I believe they were cable/online only. CFTK-TV, Terrace, BC (2004). It's the quick fade of the music for me. One more... CJDC-TV Dawson Creek, BC1 point

Worst open? Dude, seriously? MG gave WRIC a fresh new look (FX set, graphics, logo, everything) in 2016 before the Nexstar takeover. Paul Turner became the station's new VO earlier this year. It needed that look.1 point

Somewhat off-topic, but speaking of KSHB...their newscast format back then was interesting to say the least. It was highly experimental. For many stories, instead of an anchor reading a script live, they would voice-track the script over graphics or VO and music. Almost like little 20-30 second packages. The photography and presentation was fascinating as well; music on almost every story, lots of camera tilts, slowed-down shots, zooms. And don't forget the newscast ending in "SEE YA!" It's definitely worth a watch. It almost reminds me of what Tegna is attempting today in terms of radical changes to traditional newscast formats. (The problem, IMO, is that Tegna is messing with established stations, while KSHB is an upstart, but that's for another thread.).1 point

Can we please discuss the horrendous strobe light effect in this and the Fox version? Like holy crap those newscasts needed to have come with a seizure warning.1 point

Yea..That logo was horrid. Their 2007 look was way better but not by much.1 point

Have we ever talked about the WITI Six is News era? The individual elements of the open really aren't bad, but the mishmash of the intense "It's on Fox" sounder/edgy "Six is News" brand with the orchestral FAT Package and Norman Rockwell-esque clips was just...yuck IMO. Water and oil.1 point
-
I don't think the open is bad... But KSTP somehow managed to use every VO guy of this era save for Charlie Van Dyke. If you listen to the opens on NMSA, it starts with Ernie Anderson, then Roger Thompson, then John B. Wells, then Chapin. 4 VOs in a 5 year span. (and those are just the ones we know about!)1 point

Using Chapin alongside a theme that is relatively more calm than he is.1 point

The gigantic 'NEWS' is what makes it so obnoxious. KOMU is owned by Mizzou, but they've done a generally good job of avoiding actually looking like a college station. This, though, lol. Those white things behind the logo look inspired from Media General wayyyyy back when1 point

Bumping this thread to display this: Morris pulled a WTEN* at WDEF in 2011 and rigged their Media General opens. *pulling a WTEN - keeping the same news imaging but changing the L3’s, Music, announcer, etc.1 point

I always though WRTV's graphics looked terribly cheap for a market Indy's size in the mid 90's:1 point

That looks like something some teen kid Wikipedia editor who has been blocked 19 times with 17 sockpuppets came up with trying to make up a station. That barely-visible text thinness is the polar opposite worst from WJZ's Fat Helvetica.1 point

WABG just needs an owner that gives a damn about news and presentation rather than being concerned with owning every station in town.1 point

And yet WJZ is still first place. They must be doing something right in Maryland1 point

I like Chroma Cues. It could use some updates (as I've said countless times) the current cuts are from 1997. Their graphics aren't the worst as mentioned. The overuse of Helvetica extended however ruins it for me. Some of their graphics are even difficult to read because of it. But the O&O look would be a massive improvement. And Upchurch I believe is around still, I've heard some of his most recent radio imaging (2012/3) and he can definitely bring it up to modern times without loosing the overall feel of the theme.1 point
-
Man you have poor taste in news opens; while the CBS 2 may be a bit wonky; it's ambitious and a relic of it's time. NBC 10's is just fun, especially the theme which is one I want to see publicly posted if the time comes.1 point

From the Bill Applegate era at CBS 2 in Chicago: Bush league crap, especially for a station whose ratings dominance could have once been accurately described as ridiculous.1 point

The seizure-inducing flicker at the beginning is really the only downright terrible part of that. The open actually reminds me a lot of WBFF from around the same time...1 point
