Hearst Stations won several headliner awards. WBAL Radio won 2 awards, WBAL-TV 4, WCVB 5 and WYFF 2. It is very interesting seeing their flagships jockeying for the same awards. I wonder how many they were nominated for. I believe their newspapers won several as well but since this is a broadcasting forum I did not include them. Here are the results in alphabetical order: WBAL-AM Best of show: Radio: “Pimlico Preakness Jockeys of Tomorrow” Scott Wykoff Radio stations newscast, all markets: Second place “April 30th, 4 p.m.” WBAL Radio News Radio stations feature and human interest story, all markets First place “Pimlico Preakness Jockeys of Tomorrow” Scott Wykoff WBAL- TV Broadcast or cable television stations newscast Second place “11News at 5:00 – April 30, 2014” Shannon Encina, Traci White and WBAL-TV News Team Broadcast or cable television stations continuing coverage of a single news event Second place “26th Street Collapse” WBAL-TV 11 News Team Broadcast or cable television stations health/science reporting Third place “Medical Compilation” Lisa Robinson, Donna Hamilton and WBAL-TV News Team Broadcast television stations website First place WBALTV.com WBALTV.com team WCVB Broadcast or cable television stations newscast First place “NewsCenter 5 at 11: Back Bay Fire” Chris Roach and Nick Terry Third place “NewsCenter 5 at 11 p.m.: Revere Tornado” Chris Roach and Nick Terry Broadcast or cable television stations coverage of a live breaking news event Second place “Revere Tornado” Andrew Vress, Gerry Wardwell and the NewsCenter 5 team Broadcast or cable television stations health/science reporting First place “Battle Against Time” Kathy Bickimer, Brian Menz and Anthony Everett Broadcast television stations website Second place WCVB.com WYFF Broadcast or cable television stations documentary or series of reports on the same subject Third place “Chronicle: Shoeless Joe” Lee Brown, Jennifer Mihalic and John Hendon Broadcast or cable television stations business and consumer reporting First place “Chronicle: Main Street Carolina” Lee Brown, Jennifer Mihalic and John Hendon Sorry this wasn't organized neatly but I was posting this on my iPad which doesn't allow me to use the WSIWYG editor.

It now appears it was burnt in by the photographer. But I still don't know where they got that logo. Google does not return any other hits.
-
It was a toss up for me really. The bug moves around where when most people upload watermarked videos their name is static. I did a reverse image search for this logo and can't find anything similar to this. Finally the font they used seems to match the one used during the show.

I don't feel like starting a new thread for something so minor but tonight on Nightly News they used a unique courtesy bug: https://twitter.com/rkolsen/status/588535588510392320 Seems to go against their branding guidelines The bug switches to the right later on in the video. Do you think NBC would accept a video with this logo burnt in? Edit: Here's a higher resolution version of the image:

I would be surprised if ABC made a fuss considering the WLTV and WJXX, a duopoly in Jacksonville, simulcasts their newscasts and uses both logos in their chyrons. In this case I don't think ABC would really care as long as the NBC logo does not show up during network programming. Edit: After looking at the video and consulting Wikipedia it appears there are some separate newscasts only on the NBC station, namely the 11:30 AM and a 6:30 PM newscasts. The video looks like it was posted after the mid morning newscast. From what I've seen of this package I thought the but is inserted in the production control room but in this case it's gone. Perhaps because of this unique arrangement they deviated from the standard operating procedure.- 3685 replies

It seems like it's been atleast three months. I thought the package launched at KXAS when they moved into their new building in November 2013 and KNBC launched them in February 2014 when they moved to Universal City.

I'm confused are you saying that with Serestar purchasing KTMW they most likely become the Telemundo affiliate for Salt Lake?
-
That is just downright cruel. I remember thinking how ridiculous it was that WBAL for several years had Stan Stovall and Tony Pann use morning shift and the 5 PM show - but they were able to go home for several hours and didn't have to do the noon shift. I hope they give Zoraida some time off after this week.

If your in Dallas you can go to the Dallas Auto Show this weekend and see KXAS' Texas Thunder Truck. https://twitter.com/txthundertruck/status/581623709850603522

I read somewhere that with the TVEverywhere services some ads maybe dynamically replaced if they did not sell the streaming rights. I wouldn't be surprised if networks and their affiliates stopped selling broadcast only ads.

Kirk Clyatt at WVIR was apparently fired for speaking to the Charlottesville, WV city council urging them to stop celebrating Lee Jackson Day. The holiday is celebrated in Virginia on the Friday before Martin Luther King day. Apparently he's relief US news presenter for a few radio stations in Australia and provides commentary. WVIR hired him knowing he did commentary online and on radio but it appears speaking out at a city council meeting was too much. I assume they did not care about the Australian radio commentary because they figured no one would pay attention to Australian radio. I'm guessing there is something else that precipitated his firing. http://wina.com/news/064460-recently-fired-weatherman-speaks-out/ Here's his blog entry: https://kirkclyatt.wordpress.com/2015/03/19/really-fired-for-speaking-to-city-council-about-a-confederate-holiday/ The audio of his speech: https://soundcloud.com/clyatt/what-i-did-said-that-so-upset-nbc29 As a side note WVIR was station number 38 he's worked at. A quick google search makes it appear he was fired from WBFF, WHP and WVIR.

Was this broadcast on TV or is this just a blurb on their website? Whatever the answer may be it definitely appears to be a conflict of interest. The article appears to be the type that you would read on Patch.com (is that still around?) or a free local newspaper. I guess they felt the need to promote this "award" given how much money the dealership spends on sponsored segments. This makes me wonder what would they do if the dealership were involved in a scandal? They would definitely have to walk a fine line between exposing wrong doing and maintaining an advertiser. I assume their response would be proportional to the scandal and whether or not they could afford to lose the sponsor.

Mike Masco (who when he came to Baltimore freelancing a few months at WBAL was repeatedly billed as Mike Manco) is leaving WMAR and TV.

It appears Kevin Torres who was fired by KUSA a few weeks ago has been hired by the local Fox affiliate. He starts next week. https://instagram.com/p/0MHAHTwU3t/?taken-by=kevintorresagram

She did loose some personal credibility based on her stupid mistake of going out during a self imposed quarantine but she did not commit any journalistic crimes. They started using her less and less to the point of once a week where a year or two ago she was on almost daily. I think she may have seen the writing on the wall with this whole Brian Williams saga and realized that Lester will want to book the people he's most comfortable with. One example of Lester putting his mark on Nightly News is less reliance of Al Roker, Janice Huff and the Weather Channel but now the go to meteorologist is Dylan Dreyer. Since Lester took over I think I've only seen Al and Janice once. I will say I did like "Dr. Nancy" her short lived show on msnbc which had a six month run. The show focused on health and politics. However I don't think there was enough health news for a daily show. I watched it daily while I had to be off my feet between the time I broke my back and my back surgery.

I am surprised that KSDK has yet to stream their newscast yet in light of these two police officers shot in Ferguson.- 3685 replies

It goes way way back. WMAR started going down hill was 20 odd years ago when they dropped Oprah. In the last few years they've made good strides.

It's been reported that KUSA's Kevin Torres was unexpectedly fired. I've been following him on Twitter/ Instagram since I heard of a stupid plan (and I think sweeps stunt) of an "election" between him and current anchor Kyle Clark to see if the latter should continue anchoring the evening newscasts. It was a stupid contest that for such a large market only received a total of 700 votes. Subsequently I followed them both on twitter and they both seem very nice. TVSpy quoted the TV reporter of the local newspaper and said that a traffic altercation was related to his firing. I don't know what type of traffic violation that could occur that would result in a reporter being fired with out any mention of it in the press. The day or two before he was fired he posted something on Instagram where he said that only went out to get some craft beer.- 3685 replies

Unrelated to the cut of music am I thinly one who thinks it's weird that their open states that WTSP's newscast in HD sponsored by Bright House? I think it's a bit tacky. I hate sponsored segments but I understand it's needed in this day and age as stations need to make money in any way possible. I would honestly prefer if the sponsors logo is unobtrusive and not mentioned. I also would like it if stations stop pushing their newscast is in HD. I can understand the need to point it out if you just switched to make a point to tell viewers to go to the HD channel but it's a bit ridiculous to make a point of it in your next graphics update. The only exception I would make for promoting HD is if Nielsen provides a break down of viewers by source (HD/SD/Provider) and that the HD feed was significantly lower compared to the HD market penetration. I feel like that and the CC logo that appears on WPVI isn't needed any more on newscasts as CC is required by law. As far as I know WPVI is the only one with the CC caption in their open in this day and age. Got a video?- 3685 replies

I like it how the individual panels can be angled where the camera blocking can make it appear (at times) to be that they are sitting directly in front of the panel. The GMA panels are just too big to the point where they overshadow the talent. The panels on Today probably max out at 8 feet off the ground while at times GMA's look to be about 12 feet.

Has there been any official release regarding their morning news 4:00 AM? I've checked the schedules and they still list 4:00 AM as Early Today. I came acrosse this Instagram account for their morning news anchors which says they are on the air from 4:30 - 7:00 AM. Then there this Instagram post by Tracy Davidson mentioning a 4:00 AM start time. I'm guessing 4:00 AM is the defacto start time because they've been doing this for a few months now but for some reason they don't want to make it permanent so they decided to keep 4:30 AM in their profile. http://nstagram.com/p/yrGjp0xvwB/

I wrote this in the middle of the night and forgot to make my point. In hindsight WCAU probably shouldn't have started news at 3AM. I personally don't think there wasn't a need for such an early newscast for such little predicted snowfall.
-
Thanks PhillyHere some other members thought they could fit SkyForce 10 together in one of their studios, to which I voted no.
-
So today they started AM news at 3AM. Any snow yet up their Down here in Baltimore they started at 4AM. Looks to be about 3" of snow around.

I wonder why KENS doesn't drop their logo bug during the weather forecasts. At the very least they need to make it where the weather graphics aren't blocked by the bug. This reminds me of this image I saw an editor at abc news post. ]- 3685 replies
