  1. I think we are conflating the two. It's not that an anchor can't bother to anchor an additional hour, it's how the talent's contract is wrtitten. If Liz has a contract that says she anchors X show and fills in X amount of times, the station has to adhere to that legal agreement. All parties signed off on that. Additionally, each year we revisit the topic of anchors being off on the holidays. Just let the tenured anchor live and enjoy time with their loved ones. On the flip side, let's be OK with the green talent getting a few at bats so they can hone their craft. The topic doesn't need to be revisited annually.
  2. Yes, it is done from a picturesque section in the KTLA parking structure that faces DTLA. They will use this location if the flashcam in the newsroom and their NewsCenter are being used. Reporters tag out with "reporting live in Hollywood...." but the keen viewer knows it is in their parking lot.
  3. They've been airing tributes all evening at the top of their newscasts.
  4. KTLA doesn't have a 2pm news. They have a 1pm and 3pm. KCAL had a 2pm years ago and it was very popular, anchored by Mia Lee. It was basically the car chase newscast since that's all that was happening at that hour for the most part.
  5. After suffering a mild stroke over Memorial Day weekend, KTLAs legendary morning weatherman Mark Kriski returns tomorrow morning. He will ease into his duties….only doing 7-9am. He usually does 7-11am. This is a welcome return since Mark had his stroke shortly after Sam Rubin’s passing. https://ktla.com/morning-news/mark-kriski-announces-his-return-to-the-ktla-5-morning-news/
  6. Another great take from Today.
  7. They have another stage that is used for "Frank Buckley Interviews" and has subbed as a temp set when the last 3 sets were being build. They should gut the secondary stage and create a new set for some of these newscasts to minimize wear and tear on the main set. I know the 4pm news broadcasts from a little nook in the main studio.
  8. 5pm talent rejoin
  9. I'd imagine Cindy would also pick up either the 5pm or 6pm news when Maurice DuBois is fully immersed in his CBSEN duties. I don't think CBS looks fondly at paying a hefty salary for an anchor that has a single 30min show ::cough:: Dana Tyler ::cough::
  10. Looks like just the 5pm is moving to the virtual studio. The other shows will still most likely be in the new KCAL copied set.
  11. Have there been quiet anchor changes/departures? I saw a quick promo that featured Colleen Williams and Michael Brownlee as the 6pm team. Not sure if this is for the Olympics or a permament move? Carolyn Johnson was the previous anchor at 6pm.
  12. The KCAL set is coming to Chicago!
  13. It is probably written into their contract. Since CBS News and WCBS occupy the same building, it's not that hard to make the connection happen. They are paid a salary which has certain stiuplations into the salary/contract. Any additional hours the WCBS crew is working at the network has been vetted by HR/legal and the talent's agent.
  14. Wishing Mark a speedy recovery. The month of May has not been kind to the KTLA team.
  15. A friend of mine texted me. I didn't believe it. Sam was just on yesterday! RIP Sam, I watched you since day one. Life is too short. Tell your friends and family you love them. Take the vacation. Take the risk. Tomorrow is not promised.
  16. Do it right, or don't do it at all.
  17. April Fools Day fun at the CBS Duopoly
  18. Unfortuntately, this is a full circle moment for Susan. She has covered stolen vehicle pursuits and became a victim. Looks like her car will be ok. It sounds like she wasn't on duty, but was attending an event. I think this might be more common as reporters and photogs don't always ride together...not always common practice in LA.
  19. Interesting. That was a staple of the Action News brand.
  20. Did they get rid of the "Action Cam" bug? Didn't see it in the first live shot of the noon.
  21. KNXT (now KCBS) 11pm newscast- June 1981. A few things to note... Not a single live shot. Not that it's a bad thing, just shows the evolution of TV news Weathercaster is off, anchor man reads the weather headlines and temps very briefly at the end of the show Jim Hill, a giant in LA TV news/sports is still going at it to this day. Jess Marlow was another giant. He would leave KNXT to go back to KNBC a few years later Marcia Brandwynne left for KTTV a few years later. She later became the AND at KTLA and was also the EP of the KTLA Morning News for a time as well. Orange County reporter Dave Lopez featured in the clip recently retired, but still active on social media.
  22. Poppy and Phil will be fine. I believe Poppy was going back to school for an advanced degree before she took the morning anchor gig. This may allow her time to re-allocate her focus elsewhere. Phil was serviceable as an anchor and only filled that position for a short time. He will be back in the correspondent ranks soon enough.
  23. To the latter question- FOX TV stations management have issued a directive to expand news at the O&O stations. I have included a link for Good Nite LA below. Not being negative, just realistic...I wonder how long GNLA will last before it transitions into FOX 11 News at 11. Does anyone remember the ill fated Studio11LA with Laura Diaz and Christine Devine? That is now FOX 11 News at 5pm.
  24. Curious what stations KTLA streams on as I live in the market. AFAIK, they only stream thru the iHeart radio app.
