From nightside to dayside. KPRC anchor Daniella Guzman moves BACK to mornings. Before leaving LA for Houston, she anchored Today in LA on KNBC. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2025/11/daniella-guzman-moving-to-kprc-2.html

KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread
FiveNews replied to Roadrunner's topic in Los Angeles News
The 12pm news has been a staple since the origins of KCAL. The noon and the 8p, 9p news were their popular newscasts. You could always count on a police chase or 2 during one of these newscasts during the week. -
KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread

I thought the same would happen at 9am. KCBS would simulcast the 9am hour of CBS LA Mornings on KCAL when CBS Mornings Plus was cancelled. The management went with LMAD instead. Interesting development with the 4pm simulcast because when 2/9 became a duopoly years ago, KCAL and KCBS vowed to never air competing newscasts at the same time. Times have changed and the stations can easily get double the ad revenue on KCAL and KCBS. I wonder if this will be KCBS' long term solution. KABC and KNBCs 4pm newscasts are decades old fixtures in the market. -
KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread

SkyCAL is fine, albeit weird. I think most viewers know that 2/9 has been merged news operation for quite sometime. Plus since recently taking the CBS LA moniker, they identify KCAL newscasts as CBS LA at XX time on KCAL9 so the KCAL branding is semi-intact. -
Not as iconic as Roundball Rock (yet), but here is the theme for NBA on Amazon Prime. I really like it.

KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread
FiveNews replied to Roadrunner's topic in Los Angeles News
Since KNXT became KCBS in 1984 they have been Channel 2 News, Channel 2 Action News, CBS 2 News, News Central, back to CBS 2 News, KCAL News and now CBS LA. Yet, the management wonders why the station can't get any traction with viewers. Save for Pat Harvey and Jim Hill, the station has been an also ran. The "We are Yours" tag line is a little silly too. Anyone remember the days of The Station of the People? -

When the third anchor is off, they go with the traditional 2 anchor format.

Good to know! From a financial standpoint, IMO, it would behoove CNN to get back to Atlanta. It is a large American city, a significant airline hub and GA is a pivotal state for politics and the economy. They can maintain a presence in NY, but Atlanta isn't a bad place to be.
-
Scott Rates is/was the ND at this station. He had stints up and down the Northern California coast. Worked at KRON and KGO. Then left to KRCR- the Chico/Redding market as ND (?) and lastly KION. His passion is mentoring younger journalists. Seems like a solid guy, hopes he lands on his feet.
-
Surprisingly, a lot of CNN shows are still produced in Atlanta and anchored in DC/NY. I thought Boris and Brianna were NYC based, the previous post mentioned DC. Although, I could be mistaken.

Per their IG (@cbsmornings), CBS Mornings will move into their new studio on Monday 9/29. I believe it is safe to assume that it will be some form of the CBSEN studio. Good for them, but it speaks volumes that they are touting themselves as #1 with a 1.5 HH rating. That kind of number back in the day would have them as bottom dweller material. Streaming and social media has definitely changed the landscape. Also, the numbers are misleading since these markets vary in size and households.

Tough to hear. I hope those affected land on their feet. Morning wxcaster Tianan Phelps returned from a long weekend in Southern California....specifically Palm Springs. Perhaps she was looking at the NPG owned station there, KESQ. It has been the 800lb gorilla for years.

Didn't catch the morning shows, but on the noon today, Amy Johnson was anchoring from their physical set. Not the VR/AR studio. -

Schedule wouldn't be advantageous. Most local PM anchors work 230-1145pm. Network anchors are in the building mid-late morning thru 7:30pm. Plus all of the travel that Maurice would endure when a big story broke would confuse viewers at 11pm.

Here is KTTV's farewell to Elex piece from GDLA. Not sure if they did something more elaborate on the PM news.
-
Great intro opening concept. Unrelated, CBS needs to get away from the legacy of Walter Cronkite. There is no doubt that he was a top notch journalist, but he stepped down in what....1980/1981? That is 40+ years ago. There is a new generation of viewers that don't understand the relevance of the man smoking the pipe in your open. I don't see other networks holding on to the days of Brokaw or Frank Reynolds.
-
Conjecture at this point. I found it interesting that KTLA reported in the 9:30am news block this morning that Elex is leaving KTLA. Is he joining that station? KTLA did a lot of reporting on the competition when Sam Rubin was around. I haven't seen as much since Melvin Robert took over. I watch KTLA most mornings and did not see them report on Ellen Leyva's retirement as a comparison, so just something to ponder on......

What do you mean? Christine Devine has been the lead co-anchor at FOX11 since the early 90s. Outlasting co-anchors Chris Harris (RIP), Bob Donley, John Beard, Carlos Amezcua, Jeff Michael, Dan Cohen and now Elex Michaelson. She has as much experience and gravitas in the market as Colleen Williams and Pat Harvey.
-
Definitely not up there with John Beard. He had a pretty solid career at KNBC before going to KTTV. Elex is/was popular with the younger viewers, but never drew enough eyeballs to make them competitive. He started his KTTV career post KABC doing GDLA.

45min well spent. Former KNBC Orange County Bureau Chief Vikki Vargas speaks about her time at the station and how the industry has changed.

It's a shame they gutted that studio. It was still serviceable and could still run circles around other sets in the market. I wish it could have remained somewhere else on the Radford Lot. -
Cheap and safe promotion. They will continue to be an also ran in the mornings.

Lester Holt stepping down from NBC Nightly News
FiveNews replied to JosiahCubed's topic in Network News
Top Story is really good. Was hoping he would hand it off to Ellison Barber so he could focus full time on Nightly.
