And according to Cleveland.com, he might be anchoring the 11pm news on Fridays??!  Dear lord.

So - they've ditched Chris Tye and Tom Meyer for Jay Crawford and Mike Polk?!   I wouldn't be surprised to see Monica Robins out the door soon as well, as the writing seems to be on the wall for veteran talent at WKYC.  This is prime time for WEWS and WOIO to get competitive with a news-intensive strategy.

Scripps & Gray both pinching pennies.. It just seems that they don't value seasoned talent.

KSAZ may have the most viewers, but KNXV has become the gold standard for news in Phoenix, despite it being a Scripps station. KSAZ's intent of mixing opinion with hard news kind of bogs them down.

KPHO was never a good news station when they were independent more than 25 years ago. I'm hoping you meant "independent" in the sense when they weren't joined to the knees with KTVK.

I'm a big fan of KNXV which IMO it's the gold standard in Phoenix, and sad part is if Scripps didn't kill Wheel/Jeopardy! Which I thought was good for them to have on the program schedule before sending it back to KTVK.   I've watched KSAZ & KTVK morning program.  Just watching online both definitely do a good job.  I like KTVK alot better under Belo, and they did a great job navigating from their ABC days as an independent station.  KPNX which is good, but just rode NBC's coattails.  From YouTube and reading articles KSAZ was a great CBS affiliate, but does a great job as FOX, but like many former CBS affiliates that are FOX i.e. WAGA/Atlanta, WJBK/Detroit eh they don't nothing for me.  KPHO for me they just seem to be the bottom feeder in the market.  As a CBS affiliate they were times they did a good job in their early years as Arizona 5 CBS & when Diana Sullivan, Katherine Anya years, but other than that.  From the Youtube Clips they were better during their days as an independent station not affiliated with a network which was 25 yrs ago.

But which one is better out of the two? KTVK or KPHO because IMO, its still KTVK.

KTVK all the way!  Under Belo superb! Under Meredith eh.  KTVK hands down.

Tbh I say both and that's because KTVK/KPHO has each of their own goods in their operations as well as their flaws too.

Overall in Phoenix, I'm gonna say it's KSAZ that's become the gold standard as Arizona's News Leader

KSAZ their morning news, but other than that hmmm. My problem is Kari Lake she definitely takes the cake. Hurts the brand.  I guess KPNX, KNXV & KSAZ  their look is so their corporate owner.

No surprise here. KPNX has been a dumpster fire since Gannett became TEGNA, and they make KPHO/KTVK look like a newsroom of stability.

Ever since KPHO & KTVK became one together.  KTVK news has taken a dive.  KTVK by themselves was still the gold standard. KPHO was good as an Indy outlet, but suck as CBS.

KNXV hands down best station in the market.

  5. News Directors on the move:

WSB News Director Misti Turnbull is being bumped up the corporate ladder at Cox and will be leaving her ND job. WPXI (Pittsburgh) News Director Suzanne Nadell will be headed to Atlanta in July to takeover the WSB news department.

Meredith has cut ties with KPHO/KTVK News Director Dan Wilson. Wilson joined the duop 3 1/2 years ago, coming from Scripps owned WPTV in West Palm Beach. Wilson also spent 8 years as the Deuce at Scripps KNXV.

Nexstar’s  WFLA in Tampa got a very brief memo saying that News Director Ryan Minnaugh is gone from the station “effective immediately.”

Jim Finnerty (and when he was Jim Finerty) was at WJW/WJKW in the '70s and early '80s where he was a weekend evening anchor and also the original co-host of the city's version of "PM Magazine" from 1979 (when Channel 8 started airing it) until 1982.

Robin Meade was also in Columbus as well (she too was at WJW before, but as an anchor trainee).

I should add that Bill Martin was at WUAB before he went over to WJW in 1994 right about the time the CBS-Fox switch took place.

Plus, Duane Pohlman worked with Ted Hart at WEWS before they would reunite years later at WCMH.

A lot of talent from Cleveland has come to Columbus, and a lot of talent from Columbus have gone to Cleveland.  Too many to list!

Ah yes....the middle finger incident.  I remember it well.

I'd give anything to see the Dave Kaylor Hobo story!   That and his dentures incident during a political convention in 2000.

Not just the middle finger incident.  At Kaylor retirement, she threw some lightweight shade at Kaylor.  Again, these two were never friendly vs. his relationship with Andrea Cambern which were more happy & friendly.

When she jumped over to 10TV she became a terror.  Not just her but some other talent who've jumped from the competition that goes over there the attitude does change.  I won't speak badly of Chris Bradley, because he died.  However, he was a nice man, but I did hear the conversation himself about Mike Davis.  I'm just leaving it at that.  I do think the folks at BNS ego got big because of the #1 status and big paychecks.

OK, one more off-topic post 😀. Since being on at WCMH Darlene Hill has said she went to Ohio State in the late 1980s. Her hiring still comes as a head-scratcher seeing how she was still freelancing in Chicago weeks before being on in Columbus.  The Doug, Mona, Jimmy & Jym era at WCMH was before my time, but from all indications Doug Adair was a real newsman's newsman, and was also a good guy all-around. I don't really critique anchors too much because I don't want them telling me how to do my job. I also personally know Colleen Marshall. A hell of a journalist, she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and isn't at all on TV for the fame. Her husband also used to work at WCMH as a photographer and editor.

I was always a fan of Colleen Marshall her doing weekends and moving up to Angela spot on the weekdays.  She went back to school and got her law degree while doing the news.  She looks really great, and she continues to be some of the last talent there.  Plus she has been there 30+ years too.

Never liked Kaylor ... all I remember him was those goofy glasses he always wore and that undercover story where he dressed up as a hobo to report on what it's like to be homeless. He was mocked mercilessly for that. I had a crush on Angela Pace when she first started at Channel 4, but I liked her less and less as she got older.

Doug/Mona/Angela/Jimmy & Jym made NewsWatch4 the best ever.  However, I had a crush on Michelle Gailiun on Channel 6.  Dave Kaylor, he just beat to his own drum, and I've heard the same from ppl who didn't like him.  When Angela, jump from Channel 4 to 10 her ego and that big paycheck got the best of her because she wanted more $$$ from Channel 4 and they weren't going to pay her.  She became an egomaniac and her and Kaylor has disdained for each other.  Cabot Rea, he was another egomaniac too.

I like good presentation skills, but don't just read the news. You definitely need to have a personality and show some emotions when doing many different stories.  Having anchor/reporter skills are good because there some reporters who are bad at anchoring.

Depends how you judge. I judge by presentation skills and all the people I listed were pretty good, with Doug Adair being the best by far. I thought Jim Finnerty was pretty good, but his hair looked weird. He never caught on.

I thought Doug Adair was put out to pasture and that's how he ended up in Columbus. Anyway, I thought all those people had good presentation skills. Never was a fan of Colleen. Good looking lady, but annoying voice.

Not just presentation skills, but you do have to have a personality too.  Lou Forrest was good at doing the news, but the man never cracked a smile. Then I found out he was friends with my former boss.  Jim Finnerty, he seems to have good skills when watching a YouTube clip from his time at Channel 8 in Cleveland, but he was horrible in Columbus with bad hair.  Andrea Cambern she was a fan favorite from Arizona.  Dave Kaylor who went to Ohio State and worked at WTVF in Nashville.  Always thought he was the goofiest on-air talent, but had good presentation skills.  Angela Pace (behind the scenes people have bad things to say about her) but definitely had good on-air skills.

Doug Adair, Mona Scott, Tracy Townsend, Bob Kendrick, that new black lady at Channel 4, Tom Lawence, Jim Finnerty (didn't last long, but he was good) and Kirsten Hartman, to name a few. I think Bob Hetherington was from a larger market and he was good too. Scott Light's from Atlanta, he's okay.

Also: Tyler Bacome, Mike Bowersock and Ted Hart. Not anchors, but rejects from larger markets.

Darlene Hill (Chicago)  Tom Lawrence left he wanted to go back to California back in 1994.  Jim Finnerty eh ( wasn't a fan, but he worked in Cleveland ) Bob Hetherington came from Cleveland he worked at WUAB 43.   Tyler Bacome this is his hometown and Mike Bowersock started during WTVN's days.  Ted Hart worked at all (3) stations.   You do have the hometown folks that are from here. Michelle Gailun,  Deborah Countiss both grew up and went to Ohio State.  Angela Pace who went to Capital Univesity and from the city,  Cabot Rea who went to Otterbein University and from here.  Jym Ganahl from Iowa he worked at KWWL.  Lou Forrest came from Kansas before working at both WBNS & WSYX.  Dana Tyler she local gal from Columbus, before going to WCBS-TV.   Bill Martin before anchoring at FOX 8 in Cleveland worked at WSYX.  Mike Jackson & Gail Hogan both worked at WTVN-TV before going over to WCMH.

Who have been rejects from bigger markets? I don't think Colleen Marshall has worked anywhere else. Going back a ways, while yes, Doug Adair worked in bigger markets, he essentially worked at WCMH as a retirement job to be closer to home (he was from Xenia). I wouldn't exactly call him a "reject." Lots of folks have worked in the Columbus market to move on to bigger and better things who you probably didn't realize ever worked in the market.

Colleen got her start in West Virginia, before coming to Columbus.  Yes, there have been some who come from bigger markets.  Tracey (Chicago) she from Cincinnati.  Kristyn Hartman (Chicago now in Cincinnati)   Bob Kendrick (Denver) who from Canada.   Doug & Mona (worked in Cleveland)   Mike Bettes (at the Weather Channel) worked at WSYX as well Liz Claman who now at FOX Business News,  Carol Costello worked at both WSYX & WBNS before going to Baltimore, DC,  CNN/HLN.

You have some stay and some leave, but it not rejection city here.

A while back, I guesstimated that they were worth $400 mm based on a multiple of revenues. Revenues have gone down, but it seems like they must have improved their profit margins.

Also remember, it wasn't just John Wolfe and family who owned the stations. A lot of the other cousins also have ownership. I think there was an FCC filing somewhere which gives the percentages.

She doesn't do anything for me.

I like her well enough. For the most part, the best Columbus anchors have always been rejects from bigger markets.

Maybe in this climate, but over the years many other names in the market came from smaller markets and made a name for themselves.

Not to speculate, but I could see her basically replacing Tracy Townsend (and presumably her hefty paycheck).

I see Jerry moving into retirement. He 70 yrs old, and I see Dom & Angela Pace (who upstairs) all moving into retirement once things settle down.   I would see Tracy & Mike being the more established ones still there.

As well Yolanda, and I was told BNS paid some big bucks to bring her from down the street.  Now I don't know, but under Sinclair, she was barely hitting $100,000.  I assume they pony up at least $200,000.  Andrea Cambern was making 250+ but when Angela Pace was doing the news she was making close to $500,000 and even got more when she moved upstairs. That why I think she will retire because of her paycheck.

I’m assuming because she’s been retweeting from the Ohio Dept of Agriculture...much like Kocot and the Department of Natural Resources.

And...I didn’t know about the vacant weekend position.  I’m assuming Karina Nova doesn’t want that gig?  (I think she’s the rising star in the WBNS Tegna era, if she sticks around.)

I kept wondering why Karina Nova, didn't want the job. She had been traffic anchor and definitely a rising star, and thought she would be good in that role.  I hope she does sticks around. TEGNA likes young people.

Within days of Kocot.  But it looks like they both landed gigs with the State of Ohio.  (See Twitter...)

I knew Maureen was going to the State but didn't know Shelby got a State job too.  WOW!  Another thing is WBNS doesn't have a main weekend evening anchor.

They've been having Jerry, Shelby, Scott and a series of rotation anchors do weekend evenings.

They should have known that it was only a matter of time. A two-station company can't compete in the current environment. It would be different if they were an independent station, but as a network affiliate they have too much to lose.

Yeah, and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell.  They didn't know.? They knew because it was a couple of BNS employees that told me that it was a matter of time.  The Dispatch, ONN and it was only a matter of time before they would sell.  The old man died and his children didn't see any interest in owning a television operation.  The problem has been the folks at BNS has rode the wave for a long time, and being a family owned station they had it all.  Now, they have to compete in this new era being held by a company that owns more than (2) stations.  Yes, The Wolfe family has had its hand in a lot of things, but they knew it was a matter of time.  The hiring of Ms. Harris from down the street was a band-aid to keep the popularity of the station brand going.

Gannett could have had WLWT after the Multimedia purchase, but the newspaper rule put the kibosh on that.  Wasn't it some kind of swap with WGRZ and KOCO and Hearst-Argyle?

And thanks to the overlapping signal rule at the time, that forced Hearst-Argyle to dump WDTN in Dayton for WLWT.

If Hearst ever goes to Tegna, that's how they get Cincinnati back.  The other markets are too tiny and in the hands of parties that won't sell any time soon (especially WFMJ, Lima and WHIZ).

Gannett did own WLWT back in the 90s, so you want them back under TEGNA control.  Hearst has made gains with WLWT moving #2 in early evening moving WCPO (3rd).  I see Hearst as stable and steady. They have their hands in other areas besides media.  If Cox (Terrier) don't work out. I definitely want Hearst getting Cox stations.

Long time 10TV reporter Maureen Kocot quietly retired. They used to have such a strong bench of reporters.

It wasn't as quiet. Yolanda gave her a shout out and it was put out there.  Now another one has left that was very quiet.  Was Shelby Kroft who came from WISN.

The word is They are NOT happy with what is going on at Twin Rivers Dr. Right now.

Well, guess what? They knew it was a matter of time. I had spoken to a couple of BNS employees who told me that they knew the writing was on the wall. What are they upset about?  Are they upset that the children didn't want to keep the station? That 535 million looks good and the family will keep their real estate holdings.  Gimme a break! Yes, it an end of an era I will say that, but the folks at TEN TV have been spoiled. Now they know what the folks at WSYX & WCMH have gone through over the years.  They will be ok.

Could TEGNA force Jerry Revish out at WBNS or let him leave on his own terms?

It going to take by the end of the year before the deal is approved.  I do see many of the older established talent moving into retirement.

Jerry is 70 yrs old.  Any changes will be 2020 going into 2021.  I do see Jerry, Dom and probably Angela Pace (who upstairs) who are high price talent.

Despite somethings, I don't like about TEGNA, it not as bad as Sinclair or Nexstar.

Dispatch did on their website as well too.

Damn. I was hoping Hearst or Graham would get WBNS and WTHR. Silly me.

I knew TEGNA would get those two stations.  Hearst is very picky and uppity so to speak.  Meredith and Graham IMO should be making some backroom deals, for Graham to continue.  Sinclair & Nexstar have their footing in the market.

WBNS will stay the same for NOW, later in 2020 into 2021 it will not be the same Wolfe Banks News and Shoes. I think it great to shake up the market, and BNS yes it a legacy station, but the tide as turn.  Time for a new era in market 34.

However, it was bound to happen. The paper was sold in 2014. Daily circulation for the Dispatch had significantly dropped before that. Real estate is the Wolfes’ main cash cow, not broadcasting.

Very sad day for Columbus media.

However, my focus is more on the guys who have been working at 777 Twin Rivers Drive for 30+ years and are now in danger of losing their jobs, or being forced into retirement...

I could definitely see NBC 4 getting back into #1. People know Colleen Marshall and Mark Taylor, and many in our market grew up with the former. NBC’s primetime lineup is a lot better now than it was 10 years ago as well when they lost that spot, so there is a quality lead-in now. Before NBC got their paws on WCMH they were their strongest affiliate — and later one of their strongest O&Os.

After NBC sold the station off, the news product took a huge hit with a lot of their quality reporters (i.e. Nancy Burton, Holly Hollingsworth, John Ivanic, Kyle Anderson, etc.) losing their jobs, their longtime ND (Stan Sanders) being fired, and the economic downturn. As cheap as Nexstar is, they’re slowly getting back what was there before Media General cut everything.

😂🤣😂 I'd told you all that the Wolfe Family was going to sell.  Getting Yolanda Harris from WSYX was just a band-aid.  The Old man died and his children were itching to sell.  The Dispatch,  ONN all have been gutted. It was bound to happen.  As for WBNS yes, it an end of an era, but now WSYX & WCMH can battle for top spot.   WBNS may stay #1, but TEGNA a hot mess at times.   WOW.  Definitely, want to know what going on at Twin Rivers Dr.  I always thought TEGNA would be apart of BNS fabric.

WKYC is planning to launch the new 5pm newscast in January, according to The Plain Dealer.  No word on who will co-anchor with Jay on that new show, but I think with Channel 3 at 5, it will likely leave both WEWS and WOIO in the dust.

Hardly WEWS #2 @5PM..As for WOIO of course.., but WEWS needs to step their game up..Sad that Scripps & TEGNA both look like each other.. WJW does well, but let see how long that last with Nexstar...
