  1. Doug Adair and Colleen Marshall were their shortest-lived anchor team. Adair left not too long after this clip and was replaced by Cabot Rea, who recently retired in 2016.

Doug left in 1994 retired. Angela Pace had left CMH for BNS in 1992 and Doug/Colleen worked for a hot minute. Colleen was on the weekends until Angela left. Gail Hogan was on LIVE at FIVE & 5:30 LIVE. Cabot Rea, had been with the station a long time and took over for Doug Adair. Cabot, was weeknight main anchor from 1994-2016 (22 Years) but had a total 31 years at CMH. Colleen still going and she been there since 1987. 31 years total. Jerry Revish as been at BNS for 38 years.

  2. All I can say is, boy what a dump channel 69 was back then! We can all be thankful that Channel 46 caved in and let CBS make them their new affiliate.

BTW, Channel 69's potential purchase by and affiliation with CBS went as far as having them running CBS' daytime shows (CBS This Morning, Price is Right and the soaps) in the weeks leading up to the switch (WAGA had already pre-empted them for an expanded morning news and talk shows).

WVUE Channel 69 would of been just like WWJ in Detroit. Idk if 69 would of gotten a newscast, and 69 already was airing The Price is Right & CBS This Morning before the switch. The soaps were still on WAGA. Glad that 46 was able to pick-up CBS and it took 46 awhile to expand their news. They moved 10pm to 11pm. It wasn't until 1995 they got a noon news. They did do morning cut-ins. It wasn't until fall of 1996 46 started doing a 6pm news. I do wonder if CBS would of bought WATL would CBS' investment would have been there?

As for Detroit if WKBD was never sold from Cox, CBS would of made a great investment in Detroit. WADL owners was asking alot from CBS and they were willing to move. WXON-TV20 wasn't interested, because they were looking for to WB. When you look at the whole switch. I think many things could of been done differently in several markets.

  3. Youngstown is - not joking - half the size it was about 40 years ago, but it’s voter base is so chaotic and politically unpredictable. (Hell, they supported Traficant’s toupee, I mean, Traficant, for decades...)

Political ad spending in a market like that has got to be ridiculous.

Do you know why they supported Traficant? Umm. the mob runs Youngstown that why.

  4. I can't imagine why it failed other than it went up against WAGA (which is why WGCL chooses to do a 9pm for Peachtree TV), but I thought that was great!

Also, and you can fight me on this, but Karyn Greer is so underrated. She is one of the best anchors the Atlanta market has ever had (almost up there with Amanda Davis and Brenda Wood, but not to the level of Monica Kauffman-Pearson) and I hate that both 11Alive and CBS 46 haven't kept her in a more permanent role for much of her time at both stations. If there's challenges behind the scenes that we don't know about that's understandable, but if there isn't than she has been shafted for years.

I agree Karyn Greer is underrated but I wouldn't put her amongst the ranks of those

anchors personally me I would put Lisa Rayam over Karyn Greer.

No order, I my fav Atlanta anchors

    Anchor: Lisa Rayam

    Sports: Ken Rodriguez

Weather: Ken Cook & Markina Brown (Shes was a head turner, ALWAYS grabbed your atttention)

    Investigator: Morse Diggs.

Honorable Mentions: Jeff Hullinger and Jovita Moore

Karyn Greer has been in the Atlanta market for 30 years. She started on then WGNX Channel 46 Indy as weekend anchor and when the weeknight anchor on the 10pm news left she took over. She been at 46 from Indy to the station becomes a CBS affiliate. In 1999, the station get a new owner. Dave Roberts(then ND) at WXIA brings her over to 11Alive where she was the reporter for Special Projects, and weekend anchor/reporter. WXIA would produce the 10pm news for WUPA, and it could of been a contract dispute, because it was ratings were not there to continue. She would move up to AM anchor and team up with Jill Becker doing Morning/Noon News. Also substituting in the evenings for Brenda Wood at times. They took her off the morning news and cancelled the noon news. She was given a contract, but think with TEGNA being TEGNA, she walked away and it was said her contract wasn't being renewed. She went back to the place she started and was doing reporting and fill-in anchoring. Now she anchoring the Noon news. While her comrades in the market have retired, passed, or moved on. She still only of a few left with a brand name in the market. She should be doing more at CBS46.

Make note all (4) ladies competed with each at 6/11pm newscast during the 90s after the switch WAGA at 6pm only.

    WSB/2 -Monica Kaufman

    WAGA/5- Amanda Davis

    WXIA/11- Brenda Wood

    WGNX/46-Karyn Greer

  5. I'm hearing rumors, new rumors out tonight, that WFMJ may FINALLY get into the 21st century themselves by launching a 5:00 p.m. newscast. No official word on that yet (or even if its just a half-hour or a full-hour) but if it does happen, you heard it here first on TVNT.

    WOW! Now that's news!

  6. Yeah, this idea that Tegna is rolling out the red carpet for a vet anchor is crap. He's doing commentary and is probably not getting paid a whole lot to do so.

Tegna has pushed out far more longtime anchors than they've brought in, that's for sure. Seems like half the people at KING are like nobodies now. (Hip nobodies)

It seems that When Gannett/TEGNA got a hold of those former Belo Stations. TEGNA got a hold of the most respected stations and gutted them. WWL is a shadow of it former self. When you read about some of the execs said they had to transform the news into a 21st century model. They just went crazy in my book.

  7. * Graham

I would like to see Cox swallow up Meredith and remain as Cox Media Group if they decide to go that way.

I would like them to merge with Scripps but have the bigger name if possible. I kinda of want Meredith to go away. It be nice to see WGCL become a CBS O&O.

  8. Its not crap when some of its stations are actually done very well... KPTV, WHNS, KTVK, WFSB, WNEM, KVVU, WALA, WGGB.

More of their stations are done well than those who are just crap.

Those station yeah they might do well, but I still think Meredith hasn't been aggressive enough in expanding their footprint. I think MediaGeneral messed them up, which could of been HUGE!

Personally I hope COX rethinks it sell, but Meredith owning COX station...I'm just not sold on that. Meredith could gobble up some small ownership stations, but it not. Their best bet would either be a merger with Hearst or Grahman. I also wonder if Weigel would be interested in expanding their footprint?

  9. I agree when EW Scripps pushed Leon Bibb and Lee Jordan out "so called retirement". I knew Leon wouldn't set back, I know he did come back on WEWS once or twice after leaving. Cleveland TV news market is very great market when it comes to talent. We are proud to have Leon and all other others.

Scripps & (TEGNA) have wanted to get rid of high price profile anchors in their respected markets. For TV5 being such a legacy station it current state and most state of Scripps stations suck donkey balls. I understand they have to streamline and that all good and great. However WEWS looks like crap, and Leon Bibb said he working part-time at WKYC.

  10. KCTV just ran off its ND... again.

It seems that KCTV, WGCL, KMOV, WSMV can't keep a news director at any of these stations. Maybe the reason is Meredith

is a piece of crap! I think it time for Meredith to merge with Hearst, because what the deal working for Merry-Death?

  11. KVUE 1989 block

KDNL 1998 promo "THE fastest growing news is St. Louis" do you buy that?

    As for KDNL;

Maybe they got a bump up in the ratings from 1997 to 1998. Maybe they went from a 1.5 to a 2.3. It called growth. Who knows?

However, give them credit their product wasn't bad. Even the look was polish. Too bad they couldn't have build off of that.

  12. Has WGCL swapped Shon Gables for Tracye Hutchins?

I've noticed the last few days Tracye has been anchoring the morning news for CBS 46

FTVlive.com reported that Shon moving up to 5pm and Tracye back to mornings.

  13.

Question for you. During Channel 4 era as CBS affiliate. I read that Channels 4 & 5 were neck & neck in the ratings while Channel 8 was the top dog. Did Channel 4 do well in the ratings as CBS affiliate? Do you know what the ratings were before the big CBS/FOX switch? Channel 11 they were an Indy outlet, and did they well as an Indy?

  14. Listen, guys, I’m not gonna do every area. I have a list of areas already written down that I am doing, so please be patient.

Also, I’ve posted it before, but it also takes weeks before I produce compilations, as I have to rummage through NewsActive3’s channel to find footage (as there are A LOT of his Various Newscast Opens compilations). It takes, possibly, up to 5 or 6 weeks.

Also was Anchor Media a new company the Gulf Broadcasting guys formed when Taft bought them? My theory is they used WSYX as the nuclei for that company when Taft sold it off in 1987.

WSYX got the shaft, because it was broken from Taft when the takeover went down. It couldn't be apart of Great American Broadcasting (UGH, which urkes me) due to lost its grandfathered protection of the FCC. Robert Bass was a shareholder when at Taft and he created AnchorMedia and bought then WTVN-TV now WSYX. AnchorMedia also bought WLOS & KOVR as well. It would of been nice if WSYX would at least had been under Great American at that time.

Many people who worked at WSYX told me the reason their woes always run deep was due to ownership. They had their issues with Taft. I remember reading about what Taft thought they did, but people on the inside said there was good and bad with Taft. When AnchorMedia & River City came along it was just business and numbers. Both companies were private equality group. They had no broadcasting history. It was all about numbers, and Sinclair had already owned WTTE, but used WSYX has service because it had an operation. Sinclair thing was to get rid of all the established anchors, because they made too much $$$. Cheaper is better, and that what they did. However, WSYX made alot of money for the company group, and before getting their hands on KOMO, WJLA. Sinclair, was just some regular broadcasting company that wasn't much to crow about. Everything was cheaply done. Now, in present day Sinclair sits as one of the top broadcasting companies. I do wonder what would have ever come of WSYX. There was a time where Nationwide Insurance had a communication division and owned several tv stations i.e. WBAY, WRIC, and WSYX was poised on that list. Also Journal Broadcasting was also interested as well too. Then when stations were switching in the 90s. There was even rumbles that WSYX could switch to FOX, but that kicked down very quickly!

  15. Better yet, "24/7", then "Evening Report" (keep 'on your side' confined to consumer/enterprise reporting like it was intended). The entire thing is a word salad and you've got the circle 7 highlighted enough where that just stands alone.

I thought it should of been called 24/7 Newschannel. That would of been my idea.

  16. The new set debuted in September 1992. It was met with derision in the local newspaper, calling it something out of a "Batman" film. It would get replaced in late 1995.

Still too bad we can't find anything with "USA News"...

WSYX trivia: IIRC the executives of Anchor Media, which purchased the station in 1987, were the same people behind Gulf Broadcasting (WTSP, KTSP, WGHP). Anchor also owned KOVR and a few others.

The set was refresh in 1996, but a new one was installed in 1997.

  17. My question is why isn't ABC bringing back the Good Afternoon America branding for the show's 3rd hour?

Idk why ABC wants to be NBC with a 3rd hour of anything. Yes, NBC makes a ton of money. Ben Sherwood is a news guy and he getting rid of The Chew. Does it really matter if Good Afternoon, Good Morning, Good Night, Good Day? It be nice if it was Good Riddance America.

I'm a lover of news as well, but with 24 hour cable outlets. Do we really need another news/lifestyle program on tv? They could be doing so much more than another hour of a morning news program that only covers news from 7-7:30am and after that it cooking, clothes, celebrity and more. GMA is not my GMA that I once was proud of. Even though Today Show does the same, but at least it consistent.
