I've probably done worse things on the air, but all of it happened before Twitter existed.

    Oh you said it!

This stuff always happened...just now it's so much easier to get caught and busted because there is instant proof of said "mis-deeds".

You just can't have ANY fun anymore.

  2. This collection has over 100 flags and took over 40  years to collect .

Think of all the fun you could have with those.

Plus I’m convinced that one of the mic flags is outdated - I’m positive there’s an old CBS North Carolina flag in there.

    still, that’s disgusting.

Plus you have to haul and lug all those flags, and you have to keep track of the stand-ups making sure they match stations, you have to be cautious of outdated logos or network affiliation switches.

...and if and when you screw one up...it's all YOUR fault.

How about just No mic flag and a nice new black Electro VoiceRE-50...

Or a nice new black  RE-50 and a generic Nexstar flag?

They're missing a great chance to tap into California's legal growing pot culture...
...eh, growing pot, that's too much of a pun. Let's call it budding weed culture, yeah...
...anyway, now's their opportunity to rebrand themselves something like KRON-IK instead.  They could even retire that tired, out-dated Golden Gate Bridge-inspired "4" in favor of four joints in the shape of a "4."

"Tired of the fluff on the other stations?  KRON 4 News is BLUNT!"  I'm giving you a license to print money here, Nexstar.  You can thank me later.

Can we steal Scott Budman from NBC-BA and have him host? I bet that would create quite a buzz .

Nextstar my want to dabble in this...but expect the whole idea to go up in smoke..

That's my 2 cents...or is it a dime bag?... do they still call'em "lids"???

Or is "lids" considered some kind of slur now?.

    Scott Budman wonders "why"?

WGME had to evacuate their studios due to flooding; they're doing their newscasts out of a makeshift newsroom set.
    DxtO0q6W0AAxk-L.jpg

WGME might want to consider doing what we did at KBEX-TV during our last flood.

We purchased these nice inflatable news sets from Alibaba.com.

    https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/2015-Popular-Inflatable-Bar-Inflatable-Service_60298572502.html?spm=a2700.7724857.normalList.26.edac7ea1J8fThQ

    162080904_Inflatablekbexset.jpg.9b24e0b6303096825a600e0d3b3880fc.jpg

Now we can broadcast live when our area floods. We just get a few cameramen on tire innertubes and LIVEU's...and we can drift along and still broadcast...while keeping dry.

The sets also come in festive colors, and you can even order sets with your station branding...order plenty in case a few get punctured or sink.

WWL has ratings “momentum” from 7 to 9? Ha! Have you actually looked at the numbers lately?

Also ... why are all your posts boldfaced?!?

WWL thinks it's going to make more money by bumping "Live" over to MYTV.

They can probably move it back if they don't like the outcome of the decision.

I don't need to look at the numbers to understand why they made this decision....it's about more money for WWL in that timeslot...now they control the whole hour, and not just a few avails that they got with "Live".

They Can sell more time, and keep all the money from the 9-10 hour....while maintaining the viewer momentum (NOT ratings momentum)  from the morning show.

The ratings don't matter in this case...all that matters is the billing.

Wow, WWL. They should've premiered the show in the fall of 2019 or back in September of last year, but this Monday?! First, they moved the 7-9am block of Eyewitness Morning News in 2016, and now they're moving "Live!" - a popular daytime show that's been airing on the station for 30 years (since the show was syndicated) after the news - to a little-watched MyTV affiliate. Bad move.

Why do you all think it's a bad move?

It there some financial reason you are aware of that you are not sharing with Tegna or the others here?

How does moving the show to another channel diminish the quality of the show? Is the sound or picture going to be worse on MYTV?

I'm pretty sure the show will still be the same...and have the same production values.

Why earth does the viewer even care if it's on MyTV?  Do our fickle viewers somehow feel insulted or degraded since it's on MYTV?

I bet those viewers can figure out how to change the channel... Kelly will get over those hurt feelings that Live will feel after being so brutally banished to MYTV after 30 years on WWL.

Maybe when they get their act together...and compensate WWL for it's valuable air time..."Live" might be able to return to WWL in it's coveted slot.

    Come on guys...

It's only a TV show...it has NO FEELINGS.

Kelly and Regis will get over being "dissed" after a few days.

Move a popular syndicated talk show that's been a staple of your station for years to a low-rated station in favor a pay-for-play morning show. Surely this won't backfire!

Hell yes they will use an older graphics package because it's free....they control that too. Keep cost down.

I doubt the people of NOLO will mind too much...if they can't find the show they can use that little channel clicker...or that phone to find the show. it's not like when Oprah abandon her core OTA viewers and slipped off to upper tier pay cable.

  10. 47 minutes ago, Georgie56 said:

Move a popular syndicated talk show to a low-rated station. This will surely work out OK!

Unless you have access to the entire NOLO ratings book then you really can't determine what an acceptable rating is for any program. In the end...it's all about billing...a "rating" is just one of MANY metrics used to determine sustainability of a program.  How much inventory do you think ABC is giving back to WWL right now?

Tegna wants to save some at that viewer momentum coming out of that 7-9am hour. Other groups are watching this formula closely and will folo suit.

  11. 43 minutes ago, rkolsen said:

If they are moving lIve to a different station that makes me think that the contract is ending soon.

As for what what you said even if they are getting hash Marks they are likely getting more money than running a syndicated show.

Do these shows use regular news people or some hire specifically for the show?  WMAR uses a separate host for Midday Maryland and I think WBFF uses a traffic anchor along with some one else.

Most have separate host...sometimes even a recently "retired" newsperson.   You want to have that separation of duties between departments (and budgets), otherwise you can have legal issues that you don't need, and the community see's right through the deception.

Shows are getting better at drawing that 'line"

Now...with lower cost of  LiveU , we can send a production department employee or even a freelancer who is assigned just to that show.  Some cities have an entire outside production teams produce the show while only using the station set and studios.

Most the smarter operators and trying to keep a clear line between news and paid...but it's still an evolving "standard".

Lifestyle shows are here to stay, and they will evolve hopefully for the better of the local community...and not the reps in NYC.

The lifestyle show is not about ratings...it's about selling little chunks of TV time that you completely control.

  12.

WWL has made a very smart move here...

Keep those local ad dollars at home...and under the Tenga roof.

I don't think Tegna has been passing these shows off as some kind of newscast. Sure there is a news element inside the shows such as a headlines and wx segment, but the rest is just ads.

    Mira,

Your morning newscast is produced by your news department and it's  operating budget is under news. The sales department sells spots on this show to support the Tv station.

The concept of the "lifestyle" show is very simple.

Many small businesses cannot afford to buy a whole entire "run" of commercials. 50 commercials can run $50,000 in a medium size market...that's a lot of money for some mom and pop coffee house that only wants maybe 1 commercial previewing their new location or flavor of grind.

The TV stations figured out that besides all the humane societies pimping puppies, and other "non-profits" out there looking for publicity; there was a whole bunch of others(advertisers) wanting to get on those shows who would pay to be on for just a few mins.

"How about a nice 5 minute interview and product demo with our fine hostess for say.....$2500? ... Spend $4000 and I will give you a live truck at your location for that product demo."

I run this all under a separate budget non-news budget so we can keep the ND happy about the lifestyle show "creeping" into his news barn....keeping news and lifestyle in different columns.

    As far as ABC goes...

Money talks...and Tegna is fairly sure they will make more money this way.

It's a very wise move that keeps the money local.

UPDATE: KUSI didn’t retract, they’re standing by their story.

    https://twitter.com/KUSINews/status/1084147388434927616

You are darn right (bad pun) KUSI is standing behind the story...and you can be 100% sure they are behind the author of the story.

    Mike McKinnon III

    https://www.kusi.com/author/mdmckinnon/

I believe KUSI is "calling out" CNN on behalf of some some angry affiliates.

Mike McKinnon III fronted that story for a reason and it's a shot across the bow directed at NewsSource.

Or maybe Mike Sr. doesn't care if the kid takes the hit if this all goes sideways.

  14. I'm pretty sure there is an email trail on this...but since KUSI is a CNN subscriber releasing or leaking those emails may just create a whole different (internal) sh*tstorm for both CNN and KUSI.

KUSI is not the only newssource affiliate to encounter problems with the national desk and NewsSource.  The degradation of established journalistic standards at CNN have contributed to a marked "change of relationships" with many affiliate's, and a few station groups .

Does anyone really think Sinclair wants to keep up a relationship with CNN?  Do they even have a relationship with CNN anymore?

Can we all say "subscriber fees"?

Some affiliates pay more than others, and some don't pay at all.

The hard left dive that CNN has taken is starting to annoy some affiliates...PAID subscribers who signed-on to CNN when they were a reputable newsgathering operation.

It looks like (to this shark) that KUSI has decided to bring that internal rift to the surface.  KUSI  might have pulled a "gotcha" on CNN, just to expose this issue.

We have a few folks here that deal with the CNN desk(s) on a daily basis...and those folks  sit in on the conference calls, so it's no secret this has been bubbling under the surface for quit awhile with more than one station in the CNN affiliate system.

    There are contracts...

...and those contracts will need to be renewed...or maybe not.

The only thing I can’t get past is CNN requesting a package from KUSI a station known with a conservative bent. When there’s breaking news in San Diego who do they most likely turn to? I’m betting KFMB or KGTV for immediate reports on the ground. Maybe KUSI for images.

To be fair the CNN ditched the AP as a source years ago.  Many large news organizations have developed their style guides such as the BBC.  Reuter’s unsurprisingly has their own online.  I’m sure many others have their own.

    And to be fair...

    KUSI subscribes to CNN.

Every other CNN affil in San Diego was asked first and refused....and CNN was welcome to send a crew to the border to ask..."are you for or against the wall"?

CNN didn't get the response they wanted so they were welcome to ask all the other local CNN newsource clients in San Diego or Imperial county.

Notice we didn't hear if CNN contacted KYMA with the same request.

And refusal to follow even the basic guidelines established for and by real professional journalist...such as the use of ANY type of style book including the CNN guidelines is an outrage.

So what if CNN ditched AP as a source, does that make it OK to ditch the established guidelines taught in J schools across the country...the same guidelines you are expected to follow when a VJ or a reporter is hired by CNN?

AP style books used to be included in your "CNN VJ welcome Package"...and you were required to SIGN and date that you read that book which included the AP style guide as part of that packet.

    Newsflash!

KUSI also dropped all the wire services  down to the absolute minimum needed to feed the KUSI website. KUSI also dropped CNS (City News Service) so now KUSI has the most organic news gathering in town.

Don't tell people in San Diego that KUSI is "right slanted" because people here would just say....

    "That's news to us".

The KUSI newsroom is full of people of color, and LGBT folks who are very out and proud (and on the air daily)...so all those cards are out of play.

Finally....before I put this thread to bed.

CNN could have sent a crew to the border to ask people in this area how they felt...but the CNN National Desk is well aware that that would have been a huge waste of money. It was easier just to call the "locals" and see if they would help CNN with it's twisted idea of journalism.

I guess FNC has Enrique Morones locked into an exclusive deal ,because CNN would die to get him on the air with the anti-wall opinion...money talks CNN.

I can promise you there are plenty of copies of the AP and Reuters stylebooks in the FOX brainrooms and newsrooms.

    CNN is dead.

When they re-adopt established journalistic guidelines they might be considered a real news organization once again.

Source fairly...and always have more than one source...basic stuff.

Any CNN alums want to chime in here?

  17. Nobody has accused KUSI of any bias...and CNN is not denying this happened.

This is just another example of the Suicide of CNN....a once proud network that has even ditched the use and guidelines of the "AP Style Book"..."

If anyone here is actually interested in how to be an TRUE unbiased reporter, you may want to get an extra copy and send it to the CNN National Desk.
