  1. Interesting watch. Adam Conover argues that Netflix swindled consumers with its cheap $8 offering, helped kill the traditional TV model, and now that it has the lion's share of streaming viewers, it's jacking up prices and adding advertisements---its plan all along. Conover also claims their method of dropping the entire seasons at once to encourage binge-watching is causing Netflix's constant show cancellation problem. Why?: full season releases causes a season to stay relevant for a few days then fizzle. Conversely weekly releases keeps momentum and attention around a show. I think Power on Starz is a good example of that. Conover also concludes that streaming services are collapsing because audiences like free content, which made the ad subsidized network television popular. A future where all of television is multiple paid streaming services is not sustainable.
  2. Late to the party but does Bill not do 6:00 p.m. anymore?
  3. I fully support The Gates being only 30 minutes but based on previous reporting I thought it will be an hour, fully occupying The Talk's slot. I also wouldn't mind a third hour of CBS Mornings as opposed to a hard newscast or local newscast, but I dont see the CBS stations with 3pm newscasts canceling them to accommodate an expanded CBS Daytime. IMO, CBS is the best of a bad bunch among daytime tv right now.
  4. Im surprised Nate Burleson wasn't tapped for that since he seems to be the more popular between the two --due in part to his cool fashion.
  5. Nice, it would be cool if they brought back the jingle in a non-corny way. Would also be cool if the New York type face below the 4 was cursive again
  6. The new graphics are too big and distracting. They occupy too much of the lower third of the screen. I liked that the previous graphics were minimalistic and not too huge. I think these were Tegna's best graphics, minus the distracting upcoming headlines bar below. It was dark, slightly translucent, and compact.
  7. The only thing I like that Scripps is doing right now is the cinematic style of shooting with their newscast packages. It feels slower than a traditional newscast but still shot well.
  8. I think CNN has three options. 1) tow the centrist line that NewsNation is doing but lacks the brand recognition to pull off. 2) Fully adopt the leftist partisanship that is making MSNBC more successful. 3) Ramp up international coverage to make it America's go to source for world news. Bonus ..or CNN could just go away Again, CNN's top problem (in primetime at least) is that they lack on air personality that can develop an audience and sell products like books and podcasts. Fox News and MSNBC excell at this. But to CNN and Fox's credit they attempt to break away for headline coverage unlike MSNBC which is nearly all politics (Trump).
  9. Nice. I Prefer the previous set but this is good. The View is great at working flexible video walls in with permanent set pieces. More TV programs need to get learn this--- a barren space with massive screens isn't good design. GMA needs to consult The View folks on set building. Same with Today!
  10. Wishing her all best. Living in fear that an awful disease is just going to keep rearing its head in your life again is nothing anyone should have to deal with.
  11. I know everyone wants to be cool and have the Today Show 'Window on the World' type studio, but the world is nuts sadly! Especially in the era of unmarked news cars, concealing where news operations are done might be good for security. I worked at a station where the company was too cheap to put up a proper gate, and people would come unto the front lawn and do crazy stuff all the time. I wondered why they at least didn't take down the station logo signage if they weren't going to purchase proper fencing.
  12. In this video originally posted by @SoFloTVClassics notice how Bryant Gumbel speaks for almost the entire introductory portion of the program. Couric doesnt speak until 11 minutes in. I noticed the same when Deborah Norville was anchoring with Bryant during Gulf War coverage. According to Couric's book, Bryant had it in his contract to open the show and toss to Willard. Eventually, NBC News President Andy Lack wanted Katie and Bryant to be equal partners so Bryant refused and left. Gumbel is an undeniable talent and my favorite host of the program, but his type A personality clouds his image. At least in his Sunday Morning interview with Jane Pauley he says he's mellowed with age.
  13. I was more so thinking CNN International Newsroom. Same thing with CNBC, I've always wondered why they don't just simulcast CNBC World in the overnight and evenings rather than random reality shows and American Greed reruns.
  14. Whoops! That makes sense. *I'm Half heartedly paying attention while multitasking.
  15. Its baffling how obviously clueless network news brass seems to be these days! Totally agree. American audiences are very insulated from global affairs because we lack international news coverage outside of a few countries. I wish more day parts on CNN were devoted to CNN-I simulcasts to differentiate itself from non stop politics on FNC and MSNBC. Like I've said before, CNN International would be a better use of HLN's basic cable space.
  16. Whew! Set preview looks similar to what they already had. Nice! Would have hated for them to "upgrade" to something worse.
  17. *wrong thread...disregard.
  18. I wonder who'd take WLNY? General question, but if media companies across the board are struggling why does Paramount Global seem to be doing exceptionally bad?
  19. Not the greatest look in the world but I would say this was Hearst's best L3.
  20. I think the aim is to have the NBC logo hanging off the edge, so they don't see it as a misalignment. Something like this... But yes, it would be more visually appealing to have the peacock align with the bottom part of the 2 like such...
  21. By comparison, is WABC's 10 AM newscast doing that much better than WCBS's 9AM? Cindy Hsu's noon debut! Glad to see her get this position. It also works out well because Chris & Mary probably come around 3:30AM, so having them alternate staying to/past 12:30 PM is a lot.
  22. On the theme of Scripps & CBS "forward thinking"... WPTV News Channel 5 is now deemphasizing the channel number and simply referring to itself as WPTV News in reporter sigs outs. My inference: digital-first mentality/irrelevance of tv signal positions.
  23. There's almost no incentive to go into the business now. Not too long ago if you hated MMJ-ing you could work to become an anchor. Now they're getting rid of anchors! Scripps' evergreen/documentary style story method is reminiscent of Spectrum News. They are well shot and rich with graphics. I love that Spectrum newscasts are not all shootings/stabbings and fires. Their reporters have also said it's not a constant grind working for them. But IMO Spectrum Newscasts are also not particularly interesting either. Yes, CBS's digital first concept is forward thinking but CBS stations are also lagging behind other O&Os in several markets. Something is not translating to the audience. A lot of what's dubbed forward thinking aims to make local newscast look like an airport/waiting room news feed like CNN Accent Health. IMO a good medium is filming visually appealing packages that would translate to the internet, and having a heavy online/social media presence. It's also ditching unnecessary live shots and allowing reporters more time to craft decent stories. Scripps has done some of that. Forward thinking is NOT saddling reporters with more responsibilities ans scrapping on air personalities.
  24. I wonder if more CBS O&Os will be ridding themselves of the 9 am newscast as well.
  25. The beat/neighborhood reporter concept is fine, I'm just not a fan of the multimedia journalist role. From First-hand experience MMJing sucks. You can't focus on wrting the story or contacting sources because you're also juggling driving, filming, ingesting, and editing all in a 4-5 hour period. To Scripps' credit, they have raised salaries to compensate for the increased responsibilities that MMJs have. But the growing roles of a reporter without the aid of a cameraman is a large reason why turnover is so high and recruitment seems to be struggling industry wide. I'll give Scripps its credit for trying something new with Scrippscasts, but I don't think what they're doing is particularly great. They are stripping broadcasts down to the bare bones in order to create a cheaper product. One of the biggest draw factors to television and news is personality. By removing the anchors from the broadcast and replacing them with a generic Scrippscast filled with interchangeable reporters, you get rid of that major element. Yes, we have to experiment with formatting, but I hope Scrippscasts aren't widely adopted across the industry.
