I agree that CBS has the best evening set of the three, but I'd say the previous morning studio at the Broadcast Center looked better. Back on topic, the area CBS still lacks aesthetically is graphics (across the board). If that improves, Evenings News will hands down be the best looking of the three broadcasts.

Among all the instability and criticisms of Paramount and the CBSEN, I just wanted to give the program props for finally improving it's aesthetic. After years of the outdated brownish looking sets, the current evening news setup is the best among the big three broadcasts. The Weekend news set looks great with a contrast of dark blue and white with the Cronkite style map. Dimmer lighting and warm colors can do wonders. Similarly the Washington bureau set looks just as good, and the O&Os are getting some nice sets fashioned after KCAL. Steps in the right direction aesthetically.

Just because something has been done one way for a long time doesnt make it good or right. Props to people for calling out the program for the decline in quality it is displayed. But again as the poster above mentioned you have the freedom to change the channel.

Not awful, Tega is usually not bad. But broken record...too barren, not enough furniture. At least the entire set isn't the video wall. The anchor desk shot is reminiscent of MSNBC and the 2014 Today show set. Seeing the entire set in the background of the main desk.

I like the corporate synergy and national FaceTime that Maurice and Kristine are getting. Kristine lead initial coverage of Biden dropping out of the election, and hate being a Maurice spammer but he did a segment for BET.

Amazing footage from KABC (1974) of the SLA raid/shoot out involving Patty Hearst. Much of this footage wouldn't be aired raw on tv today. NYC News compilation of the 1989 Staten Island tornado! Good to see WNYW in there, I often overlook them when seeking classic footage. https://youtu.be/0senSxTxZ7k?si=gyVuF2zNZkKyqmNf

Among the reasons others have listed...Bigger fish in a small pond. You can go from being a network correspondent to a local anchor (bigger role, smaller environment). They could be doing it to stay closer to family. Plus national correspondents or anchors tend to be under more public scrutiny. Tabloids in their business for personal narrative. Local can equal less attention and sometimes less drama.

The new set is good, but KCAL did it best. I dont care for story images taking over the video wall completely like above. It doesn't look as great as a skyline shot. like this style better:

Totally agree. I appreciate the effort to be different. I wish new stations would look to sports networks like ESPN for how to do sets. EDIT: IDK this is the kind of set where it's not great but it's interesting to look at. @sfomspphl: I would almost take this over WABC set just based off lighting, but I get your point. If Local 10 tinkers a few things and adds more furniture they could have something better.

I dont mean to attack her but does Abby Phillip comes of as flat and uninterested to anyone else? She is capable and prepared as a journalist but she seems very uncomfortable as a host.

I love the genuine airing of frustrations and authenticity with the audience. I am by no means a Morning Joe fan. The program is armchair pundits living in their echo chamber and pontificating about how the American public thinks and votes. That decision to pull the show for fear of rhetoric however, did not make sense. If the initial plan was to do one NBC breaking news feed -- but they reversed due to push back from not airing Morning Joe -- that would make more sense.

I support WPLG trying to break the traditional set mould but BLEH. Best set in market is WSCV/WTVJ or WSVN. Looks like this is what they were aiming for but fell short of. Image from New Zealand. Not quite Europe, but the influence is there.

The novelty of main anchors being on sunday for a major historical event is certainly worth a note. Keeping talk of other stations in their respective threads is a fair call. BUT To be fair, Now Bergen asked where CBS's main anchors were which drew comparisons to other stations for a context based response to their answer.

Desk is nice, set is in line with their previous abstract looks but it still sucks. What is that shape? South FL? Too many video walls, way to common of a trend on tv now. Welp, at least its better than their early 2010s set The one positive is that the dark lighting masks their previously cheap looking HD. It's also better than the overly fluorescent lighting on TV these days. Other Graham stations looks way better. Wish they drew inspiration from these and added a tropical Florida touch.

No Morning Joe? You beat me to it. I was questioning earlier this weekend why MSNBC didn't put any of their pundits on the coverage like Fox and CNN did. At first I summed it up to MSNBC being a skeleton crew on the weekend so they decided to consolidate resources with network NBC. Speculation but, MSNBC wanting to avoid riling up tensions probably extended to the weekend coverage as well as Morning Joe. But that thinking is off to me because CNN which also skews left has their people on. Being as a-political as possible, from observation CNN does attempt to feature opposing viewpoints and presses leftist figures harder than MSNBC. I couldn't see the way Anderson Cooper pressed VP Harris after the Biden debate happening on MSNBC. The few people from the opposite side MSNBC features, like Joe Scarborough, tend to agree with the network's viewpoint. Moreover CNN, and FOX actually break off of politics for regular news coverage more than MSNBC.

Robin, George and Michael all in on a Sunday for Trump shooting coverage. Anchors were on the weekend set. The sets camera quality looks like standard definition. Very muddy/grainy.
-
Cool to see Today simulcast on MSNBC. The joint coverage NBC Special Report MSNBC bug was on screen at first, then they switched over to an MSNBC reports bug.
-
To be fair, David Muir was not on ABC either, Whit Johnson lead coverage. CBS did have Margaret Brennan leading coverage who should be considered a familiar face. None of MSNBC's ususal commentators came in, the network simulcast regular NBC. It's always interesting to see how networks handle major breaking coverage on the weekend. So many factors like off times (and summer vacations) play in.

I'm all for giving the inexperienced a chance if they demonstrate ability...I've been a beneficiary of that. Colleges just need to do a better job of preparing talent before they enter the industry so less on the job training in required. It helps the talent and the station look better.
-
Yes, was going to mention weekend repeats. The simulcast totally makes sense. I'm not complaining that they didn't have separate coverage as it makes sense to consolidate resources on the weekend, I'm just surprised that they didn't opt to call in their commentators like Rachael Maddow as 90% of their airtime is devoted to Trump.
-
More national screen time for Maurice DuBois. He assumed coverage from Margaret Brennan at about 12:20ish AM ET during wall to wall coverage of the Trump assassination attempt. CBS was the first network to stop coverage at 12:30 AM ET. He came in on Saturday to anchor WCBS' 11:00 news aswell
-
Also interesting to note that MSNBC had virtually no anchors or separate coverage, they just simulcast NBC News' coverage with Lester.
-
Always interesting to see how networks handle wall to wall coverage on a weekend which is an atypical time for major breaking events. Lester was the only lead anchor on during the Saturday afternoon Trump shooting. It appears Jose Diaz Balart was on first then Lester took over coverage. Norah and David on CBS/ABC were not on (understandable as its the weekend). Whit Johnson lead ABC, Margaret Brennan lead CBS.
