He's leaving to fill big shoes! https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/ktla-sam-rubin-melvin-robert-morning-news-job-extra-1236328285/

End of an era. Grew up with Bill and Liz at 6 & 11 with Diana and Sade on After GH & Oprah. It's amazing just how long these anchors last and the rapport they build with the community. I too am surprised Mike is only doing the 11. Bill will be going out very prominently: anchoring at 5 and 6 as opposed to just 6 which is what a-lot of almost retired senior anchors do.

Don't forget to call it a "DANGEROUS rainstorm".

There are good but underutilized elements of the current set. For a change, It would be nice to see Muir stand next to this giant monitor BBC style going forward.

Lester Holt stepping down from NBC Nightly News
MediaZone4K replied to JosiahCubed's topic in Network News
IMO, 40 isn't that young and I don't think it should be a problem if networks are always seeking younger demos. I disagree with the anchor bench, CBS has the weakest. They haven't really groomed anyone that stands out for larger roles, with Nate Burleson and Gayle King being their most prominent personalities. In comparison, NBC has Guthrie, Jackson, Peter Alexander, Tom Llamas, Kate Snow, Kristin Welker, Jose Diaz-Balart, and Lara Jarett etc... I agree however with the poster who said Savannah lacks that evening news quality. Is 12 years on the national level that short of a time? In this day and age, people are advancing much quicker as the industry changes and turnover gets higher (at least at the local level). -

Tom is good. He checks off all the boxes: He can do breaking news, he can be out in the field, and he can handle the lighter stuff. As for who his regular fill-in would be, I see Hallie Jackson filling that role. -
The audible hustling in the newsroom makes the footage even more compelling
-
Indeed! CBS News Early Mornings would have been a more distinctive title, and eliminate CBS Morning News.

I'm in the minority but I like the current WNT studio. I think its lighting could be improved but I like the dark aesthetic. IMO it looks better than studio 1A on NNN. My main issue is the graphics and lower thirds could use updating. I agree, it would be great to see David move around the set instead of staying static and being on one shot for the whole broadcast. When I realized this this look has been in place for a decade, I was thinking the exact same thing. They must think nothing major needs tweaking if they've been on top for so long.

Probably mentioned already but it looks like CBSEN has implemented it. A singular cover story tease is a nice touch, such as the Zelenzky Trump cold open.
-
It appeared before a while back. Not sure if it has permanent use on any platform. Wish they'd keep it as it's NYC flag /sports teams colors.

I thought the same about the optics. Bezos is a controversial figure, now King appears embedded with him. Secondly, Gayle is brave. My childhood dreams of seeing space as a civilian ended after learning about the Challenger Disaster... let alone all the plane mishaps in the news. As for copying, The Morning Show did the morning news anchor in space via a tech Billionaire's rocket already with Reese Witherspoon

The rendering for the bottom set looks significantly better than the actual thing did. If only it were actually lit that way. That zoomed out view in the rendering would make for a great opening broadcast shot.

Fair. I like WABC, they are probably the best in market right now, followed by WNBC then WCBS. But among the O&O group, WPVI seems to be the strongest that I've watched.

Yes I do. My apologies, I pasted wrong clip. Here is the correct clip, Also editing my earlier post to include the correct clip. Ritter's funny shocked fire remark is at 0:13.

I would hope that was sarcasm, lol. Final point. I agree with you that too much of modern local news is robotic and void of any engaging writing. It's x then y then z happened, next story. But again, we have to balance the line between flowery and editorialization. Regarding flat earth, that's an objective fact. You never want to tiptoe around objective facts for the sake of people who won't accept it. I think RItter however knows what he's doing. Agreed. I like Ritter's cadence. It's not monotone, it's engaging, the concern again is his opinion slips which have been spoken about by multiple people across this thread. @MorningNews Ill take RItter over Dari Alexander though. She is the definition of disjointed and unengaging delivery.

In my experience anchors often rewrite the intros (that producers originally wrote) in their own way. In comparison, WNBC did the same report and played it straight in the anchor intro. Even Andrew Siff acknowledged confusion over the round-up policy, without getting too subjective. Ritter's fire remark wasn't a problem, it was just funny and odd that he found it shocking for Los Angeles to be burning in a wild fire-prone state. Overall, (my opinion) flowery language (whether ad-libbed, written by producers, or edited by anchors in the copy) is OK until we start getting subjective on hard stories. And this isn't a political critique. I hate it when Rosanna Scotto problematically does this all the time on Fox 5 with her more obvious and right-leaning opinions.
-
Speaking of awkward ad Libs, Ritter went "Who would've thought, Los Angeles on fire!" I remember myself thinking, and a YouTube commenter writing, "literally everyone" lol. Ad-libbing is one thing, inserting your personal biases into hard news stories that require straight facts is another thing. Certain jobs like a morning show host such as Mike Jerrick gives you a little room to add a little extra flair on lighter stories. But to me, tenure is not a license to editorialize. No matter how you feel about the undocumented immigrant issue, Ritter inserted his own bias when calling them "critical to our economy" in the video below. Even his tonality in "now to the confusion that is the federal round up of undocumented immigrants", Small example among many. Ritter is not alone. Gayle King does it all the time, and Rosanna Scotto is the most obvious example.

Per her LinkedIn, she announced her role as an MSJ/Reporter. Although the bigger the market, the lesser frequency of MMJ/MSJing, it still sucks that elevating to market 1 is no longer an escape from one man banding.... and on a big three station not News 12.
-
I wish they would begin each broadcast with that fantastic shot of the celing circle seven perching over the anchor desk, rather than a wide shot of the anchor desk.
-
That would be a full circle moment as they were previously co anchors at 5.

Lester Holt stepping down from NBC Nightly News
MediaZone4K replied to JosiahCubed's topic in Network News
Tom Llamas is the obvious choice. He's okay to me. Hallie Jackson has been heavily tapped for breaking news coverage so she's my next guess. Third option, based on her co-anchoring with Lester for big events is Savannah Guthrie. I'm guessing however than NBC doesn't want to mess with Today any further since Hoda left. -
I like this. The L3s are better, not fantastic but better. It reminds me of the blue box O&O L3s. For some reason their sets always look like a temporary set to me. Cheap dark lighting, all encompassing video walls.

Somewhere the President is celebrating the upheaval at MSNBC. I'm no Joy Reid fan but I never expected them to outright cancel her show. Alex Wagner's bump also surprised me.
