I agree.. they really don’t have anyone that brings the “wow” factor to the show. WNBC people seem to like Darlene and Michael.. GDNY has a good team especially later on..I do wish they’d give Dan a co-anchor 4:30-6..  WABC people will always stick with.. as they do have a really good morning team.. and PIX has been picking up some big names lately and really improving the show.

All of the stations minus WABC have had pretty substantial turnover when it comes to reporters, but it probably doesn't help that there are a lot of unfamiliar reporter faces at WCBS. When it comes to anchors though, Maurice, Kristine, and Lonnie are a pretty solid team however. It would be nice if Don Dhaler anchored with Dana Tyler at 6.

  2. Shep is anchoring in what appears to be his studio on CNBC as of 7pm ET.

I see he was doing the trademark shouting voice trend that the Evening News does now. Liked his enthusiastic delivery during the March madness segment.

John got screwed when he was moved to weekends, he posted at once point that it was not his choice. As for Elise, she's bland, as is the entire weekday morning show.

John has the quintessential personality for morning tv. Elise is more fitting for an evening newscast.

It is rather bland. Modern CBS O&O newscasts don't feel authentically like the cities they broadcast to. It just feels like a cooperate model duplicated in multiple markets (even though any o&o station on another network fits that exact definition). Fox 5 when Greg & Ro were on GDNY and Street Soldiers, WNBC with the whole 4 NY campaign and especially Eyewitness News feels more "New York" so to speak.

  4. Somewhat relevant but...as someone who's been in the audiences of both shows (pre covid) the Today anchors barely came on the plaza and the audience engagement was mucrr lower than GMA. GMA was better as they used to allow ticketed audience members to sit inside, sheltered from the elements, and a  hype man the audience awake. Plus there was a smaller crowd that walk up to and stand by the forst floor window at Times Sq. I wuestion wether their in-studio crowd will ever return.

  5. this is better than the mirrior within a mirror look.

Slightly off topic but part of me believes that ABC could give up the Times Square space at some point in the next decade. The modifications over the years have seen them use the windows and outdoor area much less to none at all. The windowed era of morning TV around the world seems to be closing.

Agreed. The trend appears to be dying down. Even pre-covid "Today" was using the plaza much less than the past.

Ratings were up modestly during his tenure (after the very recognizable Katie Couric). Do I think he was poised to take the newscast above #3? Of course not. But they should've left him alone until they found a better option, which they still haven't.

(unintentionally came out as two separate posts)

IMO Bob Schiffer should have stayed on until his retirement in 2015.

We can go on to eternity as to what anchor might bring CBS to the promised land. Besides changing who anchors the show, what other changes can be made to CBSEN to make it a better program. Formatting, graphics, theme music, story choice, presentation, reporter and correspondant roster?

Another question, should they dump Norah, do they move back to NY ,and do they go outside the bench and snap up someone from the O&Os or someone from the national cable news nets

    Yes to 1 and 3.

Broken record but: Shep Smith, Bri Wi or (iffy choice) Chris Wallace or Ann Curry. Radical choices: George Stephanopolus (not that success elsewhere would necessarily translate to CBS as we saw with Katie Couric), or even Wolf Blitzer. Any other names I'd have to think more about.

Perhaps CBS getting big names needs to extend to other broadcasts such as Mornings alongside Gayle.

Maybe the goal at this stage shouldn't be to get out of third place but at least inch the numbers up and be competitive (assuming they're not already "compeditive").  Similarly if CBS Mornings were to be canceled tomorrow and replaced, I'm sure the broadcast would still be third because GMA and Today  have what CBS's AM slot lacks --- name brand recognition from longevity.

I’m not sure why people keep mentioning Scott Pelley. He had 7 years to move the needle and did nothing. I’m sorry to burst your bubbles, but to the general viewing public, he sucked. You don’t become recognizable by being put in that chair, but you get put in that chair because you’re recognizable.

I’ve said this a million times, CBS’s bench isn’t that great. ABC and NBC know how to groom their talent.

    this 💯

NBC has Savannah Guthrie, Tom Llamas & Jose Diaz-Balart on standby, not to mention Craig Melvin for Today.

ABC has Lindsey Davis, Whit Johnson and George Stephanopoulos on ice, even Terry Moran is a suitable host for WNT. Add TJ Holmes as a great "spare heir" for GMA.

  9. I may be in the minority but did anyone else find Scott Pelley kind of stiff. IDK if that's the exact word I'm looking for but I didn't feel like he added anything to the newscast.

According to both the New York Post and FTVLive, Norah O'Donnell's Evening News tenure may end soon.

FTVLive, reporting on March 10 and citing an internal source that CBS may "downplay" her role at the network

    https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2022/3/10/norah-is-nowhere-to-be-seen-in-ukraine

And now on the 11th, the NY Post reports that her alleged attitude may not be helping the situation

    https://nypost.com/2022/03/11/norah-odonnells-attitude-under-fire-at-cbs-evening-news/

Questions: Despite being in 3rd place, is 5 Mil viewers a night that horrendous?

I doubt Tony D taking over (as rumored by the NY Post will solve anything).

Nora did give off an intense vibe ocassionaly during her time on CTM.

I know Judge Judy is in reruns but do you think the networks (especially CBS) would ask IDMBtv to air Judy Justice on their stations. Judge Judy is still pulling in great ratings in many cities even though the show has ended.

I hope so. Judge Judy feels like appointment viewing moreso than something I'd actually go on a streaming platform other than youtube to watch.

The problem is the only thing that's actually working in the talk show field, clear advertorial junk like The Balancing Act or The Daily Flash, is crap viewers will not go near because it screams advertorial, and ends up with awful time slots, and shows that move into segments with it have to step around a minefield. And there are still new court shows and formats being thrown in syndication, even as Judy in repeats, Judge Mathis and The People's Court are the ones that stick around.

There's also the fact that even as Kelly is doing well, it also faces obnoxious pre-emptions for press conferences and local breaking news, which seem to be increasing as stations realize that they can just say 'uh, check YouTube or Twitter, record Bravo at 3am, or just pay $5 for Peacock', something they can't do for Ellen. Some stations want the 'news' cake, and will take a bite of it, even if talk show pre-emptions are the result.

Also not helping; most of the stations where The Real ends up are the low-totem priority in a duopoly, so there was little promotion in these last seasons even as it was still going strong, and it got bumped to 4am through no fault of its own in many markets because Access Daily still has to be a thing, along with these lower-tier court shows. You don't promote shows on a MyNet affiliate or like Sinclair, bump it to a DT2 or DT3 position and then just collect the retransmission consent for a Dabl/TBD TV do-nothing schedule on the main channel, this is what's going to happen.

Agreed! News coverage interruptions are getting more frequent especially during soaps!

Another talk show is facing cancellation.   The Real is reportedly about to be cancelled.  'The Real' To Be Canceled - theJasmineBRAND

This one actually sucks because The Real was a more relatable, less political version of The View, and a lot less generic than The Talk. It was looking bad for 'The Real' especially in New York where WNYW kept pushing it out of its 11 AM time slot. I could however see this show continuing as a topical YouTube series.

Okay, at this point, which shows are being renewed???

Currently it seems talk shows are either a hit or miss with no clear success formula. The market is especially saturated because the soap opera genre is near total death which would offer (more expensive) programming alternatives.

I think what the talk show circuit is lacks is either more human intrest (like Steve Harvey was) or more hard conversation--less PC shows (like Donahue, Montel, Sally Jessie) to balance out the pop-culture stuff. Tamron Hall seems to be filling that Oprah void with in-depth conversation about social issues, which IMO has helped her success.

Another causality: Nick Cannon’s talk show has been cancelled after only one season. Last new episodes airing in May.

    https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/nick-cannons-talk-show-cancelled-ending-1235200702/

Not surprised. Cannon had a great upbeat attitude, and his show had a more famous guest roster than his OG show "Wendy Williams". But his show was more of the same: celebrity guests, games, and pop culture.

Was browsing through Tristan Bresnen's portfolio and I noticed a new look he produced for News Channel Nebraska. But it looks like a repurposed version of WFLA's graphics from 2016-2020 (that was also used on sister stations WKRN, WCMH and KELO). It's mostly the same besides it mostly being red instead of blue, as well as different looking Lower 3rds and Full Screens. Here's his case study: https://tristanbresnen.com/copy-of-currents-news-v2

    WFLA 2016:

3D with gloss and shine! Puts high definition tv's to great use over the dull flatness we usually get.

WCBS is back to the non-social distancing setup as of this morning

I always wonder about the social distancing set ups that they do on the news. I know it's to set an example but do they actually do that off-camera? For example, do they not interact within less than 6 ft of each other in employee areas,  and do people socially distance in the newsroom?

That is great. You never, ever want Maury on a big 3 network ever. You will get pre-empted by news reports, plus MYNet, Fox, CW, have time to run 2+ episodes a day.

Observed this a few posts back that the big three networks seem steer away from shows like Maury. I suppose they see shows like Steve Wilkos or Maury as "too trashy" per say?

Then again shows that arent that extreme like The Real, Wendy or Dicvoce Court typically dont get played on stations outside of Fox, MNT or the CW. I haven't come across big name talks shows like Ellen or Oprah on the latter three network stations but "Judge Judy" and "The People's Court" seem to play in either the big or lesser three.

As much as I enjoyed the show, Willims had mutiple personal crisis since her statue of liberty faint in 2017 which lead to multple guest hosting stints. The producers probably had enough.

Really looking at it, Williams had an Oprah effect in that Sherri Shepard's upcomming and Nick Cannon's current show are spinnofs of hers. The Breakfast Club's Charlemagne tha God gained noteriety as her radio sidekick. and I'm sure Jerry O'Connell's seat on The Talk stems from the his capabilities displayed while hosting Wendy and his spinoff test run talk show.
