Call me crazy, but could the new CNN+ be the eventual replacement for CNN itself?

With all of the problems that CNN has incurred over the past decade, it could be a "fresh start" for them.   Put all of the investment into the new standalone service and let CNN wither away over time.  One day, when CNN is a shell of itself (like HLN is now), Plus takes over what is left and CNN is new again. It gives them a chance to re-negoitiate carriage so they can get the a-la-carte customers and those who still have "Pay TV" however they get it.

While we're at it can we eighty-six HLN and perhaps replace it with an American feed of CNN International.

  2. Chris Wallace is leaving Fox News for the new streaming service CNN+. About time. I will say Chris was one of the more balanced hosts at FNC -- along with Shepard Smith -- as they weren't afraid to diverge from the network narrative. I was surprised to find out he was an NBC and ABC news anchor in the past upon looking at old news clips online, and I liked what I saw.

As for CNN+, I get that screaming is the new wave but IMO CNN needs to improve their actual tv network. Furthermore how long will this era of streaming services overkill last?

Could Brian Williams pull CBS out of third place & go up against Lester?

I would like this. Sounding like a broken record but, CBS has tried a number of things to help itself in the evening and morning only to remain in last place.

If Bri Wi were to go to the eye network I think that'd have to be coupled with some sort of formatting change. Perhaps increased international hard news aside from COVID, and calming the overuse of "breaking news". All three evening (and morning) national newscasts seem to cover the same thing so differentiation *MIGHT* help CBSEN. Otherwise he'd just be another face trying the same thing.

Even if CBSEN still remains in third, Williams with his grand narrative style and commanding presence would be a more stable presence than Norah and the revolving door of other lead anchors since Schiffer's departure.

As much as like Lester, I do think the pacing, and anchor delivery of NNN were better under Bri Wi.

They tried that with Katie Couric.  Didn't work.

That's fair.  I will say in Couric's case though she was better suited for morning television, plus she tried a softer approach than hard news the program was known for. Williams who actually hosted the top evening newscast might move the needle a bit.

I could see Katie Couric in a Larry King type of role in the 9pm hour. I could also see Bill Weir take over the 10pm hour with a Nightline type of show. And a news wrap up show at 11pm, kind of like they had with Aaron Brown.

    9pm: Katie Couric Tonight/Live

    10pm: Lateline with Bill Weir

    11pm: Newsnight with Aaron Brown

Wouldn't mind this at all. So longs as the agenda pushing is absent or kept at a minimum and politics aren't the only focus. I really wish we could get more international coverage from the American networks here in the states, especially on these 24/7 cable channels.

I still got money on BW replacing Norah on the CBS Evening News.

Forgiving that stain on his career, this wouldn't be half bad at all. CBS needs outside talent for a big name lead anchor.

The Doctors, another WALA castoff.  This probably happened sometime under Meredith's ownership.

The Doctors, was also surprised to realize that it was still on the air. It was moved from WCBS to WLNY I believe to accomodate Hot Bench, which itself was also moved to WLNY to accommodate Drew Barrymore.

Yikes. You never see that show on a Big Three station.

I've always wondered if big three affiliates deliberately steer away from shows like The Real, Divorce Court, and the more obvious Maury and Steve Wilkos. I was surprised to find out Maury used to be on WNBC back in the 90s and that Wendy Williams is on WPTV (NBC) in West Palm Beach.

Constant focus on Biden and the left, I take it?

Indeed. On the flip side I cant take CNN and MSNBC's obsessive focus on Trump and the right either. I thought it would die down after he left office but MSNBC especially is still laser focused on the ramifications of the January 6th rihots.

  9. (1990)Classic ABC News promo featuring most of the network's big shot anchors. Wish Charlie Gibson and Joan Lunden could have made it in too.

The successive deaths of the Soviet Union's leaders in just 3 years:

CBS Evening News (1982): Leonid Brezhnev's death

CBS Evening News (1984): Yuri Andropov's death

CBS Evening News (1985): Konstantin Chernenko's death, Gorbachev becomes leader

I'm guessing that 6-7 is a major competitive time slot, and they want their #1 team then.  I've noticed that WNBC has been advertising TINY segments during the evening news, claiming that the show starts at 6am, when obviously they're on at 4am.

Also look at how Fox5 has Bianca Peters in to co-anchor the 6-7am hour.

Makes sense, I even notice that programing guides isolate the 6am block on most stations instead of listing it as one big 4/4:30-7am block.

5 hours is a long time every morning.

Was thinking the same. Oji, Marisol and Ben could soely take over the 10am hour since it's all fluff and GDNY isn't on the air as competition at that time. But, if Dan and Hazel haven't complained then no issue.

  11. So Dan and Hazel will be anchoring from 6-11am now according to the new promo. I'm sure they want to push the main morning anchor duo but John & Kirstin from 4-7, then Dan & Hazel from 7-11 would be a more even split.

Personally, I think traffic reports on television are useless and a waste of time. Traffic can change dramatically from the time you see it until the time you hit the road. Other than a major accident, road closure or detour that will shut things down for hours, TV traffic is like trying to predict tomorrow’s lottery numbers.

With the proliferation of truly relevant traffic apps, the availability of constant traffic updates on New York’s multiple news radio stations, and even a SiriusXM New York traffic channel, TV traffic is nothing more than window dressing.

Anybody who bases their commuting decisions on TV traffic reports doesn’t really want to get where they’re going.

I get your point. I've always wondered if drivers really pay attention to traffic reports on tv, especially in this digital age.

But then I also question the same for tv weather reports. Outside of big storms like blizzards and hurricanes, does the average viewer take the time to sit down and watch the extended forecast or do they just google "7 day forecast"? But weather reports definitely top traffic updates in terms of audience relevance, IMO.

He was definitely in front of a green screen or a printed background at the beginning, but if you jump to the 1:14:00-ish mark (post-press conference), you'll see that Dan is coming from the Sunday Morning set. SOMETHING kept him from being on the main Evening News set.

Dan Rather reporting from the Sunday Morning set made the novelty of this even better.

WABC 1977: Love the steps concept, especially the diagonal shots where you can see one anchor behind the other

WABC 2001: Aaliyah's death, I've struggled to find news coverage of this online

  14. (2003) CBS News Coverage of Saddam Hussein's capture. Interestingly, it looks like Dan Rather is reporting from something similar to the early 90s set of the CBSEN. Even more odd is that in the beginning portion, the mid 90s red/yellow L3's are being used before transitioning to the usual blue graphics.

Cheaper to run news! It's a money grab (if they can find advertisers to buy at 4am) Otherwise they will package it in with digital sales. There are no ratings at 4am and national is easier to run --If you have the network programming. Otherwise, it's expensive to run "The Jefferson's" as a leadin to 5am news or in this case 4:30a

Copy. I was also wondering if talent push back was a factor in other stations not going so early, but definitely the financial aspect is foremost.

  16. I question if no Gayle would help the ratings. Alot of tv news viewing is about who's reporting the story as much as it's about the story itself. Gayle King (especially being Oprah's best friend) has name recognition, as did Charlie Rose. Now they were still in third despite two recognizable media personalities, but I wonder if CBS This Morning would have made it this far without them.

CBS Saturday Morning has a great team and good story choice. I'd say it deserves be #1 on Saturdays, though I do enjoy Weekend GMA more than tit's weekday counterpart.

I agree with the comment about Saturday Today. It's time slot shifts too often while Weekend GMA is always on at 8am ET. As for Sunday Today has some good stories but it feels like contrived effort at mirroring CBS Sunday Mornings.

I  think a big problem that the TODAY show has is that Comcast doesn't seem to have the same handle on what's going on day to day with the show.  I think when GE owned NBC, NBC NEWS was a much much better run organization.
