  1. Love that they restored the footage quality. I like how dim the old lighting looks, everything in the HD era appears so washed out these days.

We've seen WMAQ's coverage of Chicago's Blizzard of 1979 (above). Now, thanks to WBBM's own YouTube account, here's that station's coverage:

    Part 2:

    Part 3:

    Part 4:

Back to Today (1952) Im surprised news tickers were utilized this early into broadcast tv.

  2. Star Jones will be taking over Divorce Court from Judge Faith Jenkins. Star has a big personality so she may do well on this program. Judge Faith was nice but her marital advice felt generalized and common sense. Judge Lynn Toler, who was more powerful and personable in that role, was the best. I wish Judge Mayblean Ephraim my favorite, could make a return to the program.

Oof. Seems wrong lumping Jane in with that crew.

Jane's departure wasn't as strained as the others listed but it played out awkwardly due to the hype surrounding it.

  4. I don't recall Ann in the flashbacks. Did Deborah Norville get a mention? So many anchors have left the show on less than stellar terms: Deborah, Jane, Ann, Tamron, Billy Bush, Megyn Kelly, and of course Matt.

The flashback segments felt too brisk paced. In anniversaries past they really meditated on particular periods of the program to get a sense of what that time was like.

  5. It was an understandably scaled down 70th because of the virus, yet still underwhelming. I'm surprised there wasn't at least a zoom panel interview with past hosts. It was just a few pre recorded tributes.

I notice in the past few years (pre covid) that the plaza is being used less,  excluding live concerts. Having visited the plaza myself it'd be cool of they did more interviews and segments outside, (after COVID and weather permitting of course). This especially to utilize the live audience factor more like GMA did pre-pandemic, and to better engage the crowd that comes in person to visit the show.

Didn't see this coming for Joy Ann Reid..

After MSNBC canned Chris Matthews I knew this is something that MSNBC would struggle. If they need that 7PM slot to be relevant again  get Shepard Smith from CNBC to MSNBC...

    Agreed.

  7. Should Nextar actually buy the CW, is a broadcast television network allowed to own 199 affiliates that would in turn become O&Os?

Furthermore, is the CW anymore successful than the WB or even UPN?

  8. In terms of reshuffling, I don't mind balanced opinionated analysis in primetime, but Trump and January 6th all day long is excessive.

A line up with say, a liberal at 8 like Rachel Maddow or Keith Olberman, a conservative at 9:00, and an independent at 10 would be interesting mix.

Since MSNBC aims for a left leaning audience however, commentators in primetime and hard news all day long would be a more likely scenario.

It's a fantastic reboot of their old-time logo.  I think it's going to be the next design trend as stations resurrect and re-boot their heritage branding because of how homogeneous and "networked" broadcast affiliates have become.

WKBN doing what they did a decade ago was another great example of using their heritage "WKBN" sign as part of their logo.

I would like to see this old/new blend trend happen! Wish stations could add their own spin on the corporate graphics to add a nice balance between uniqueness and uniformity.

  10. Its a new year -- one year since the huge political breakdown that was January 6th --and cable news, CNN more specifically, remains in a hyper partisan state. With the prospect of Jeff Zucker leaving sometime in the near future, do you all think we'll ever get past this overly political version of CNN?

I have my doubts especially given the possibly of a third Trump run in 2024.

Cesar Conde and Rashida Jones are trying to make MSNBC a more "hard news" cable channel. We'll see how it resonates with the viewers.

Lets see what this means. Less partisan I hope. I liked the early to mid 2000s era of MSNBC (when they were the news source on the MSN home page). Thats when the network had opinionated analysis, particularly in primetime, but still had a strong news presence. Their New Jersey studio beat any modern set in cable news.

Dana Tyler did the 5, 6, and 11 today. Somethings up. I don't remember the last time I saw her on 11p.

It was cool seeing Dana on the 11 again, with Dick Brenan especially. I always wonder why they left Dana solo at 6pm, and didn't pair her with Dick.

I really don't think it's anything too serious but Christmas vacation staff shortages. I suppose people think something's off because Dana being the senior talent is working multiple newscasts on Christmas Eve Eve. Reguardless, it's good to see old school veteran anchors getting airtime outside of the usual 6'o'clock.
