  1. As for grooming CBS didnt invest well in that during Dan’s tenure. John Roberts was a frequent substitute but that didn't amount to anything. NBC handled succession the best of the big 3. ABC had rocky moments but Gibsion, Sawyer and Muir were all solid picks.

My personal favorite version of CBSEN was when Bob Scheiffer was interim anchor from spring 2005 thru summer 2006.

I think Norah is a solid journalist but I haven’t been thrilled with her version of CBSEN.

Agreed. It's the same mistake CBS made with Katie Couric on CBSEN...

But the bench has been weak for decades- evident when there was no clear successor for Dan Rather ( Diaz-Balart and Snow at NBC, Davis and Johnson at ABC who all make appearances on the network's weekday shows and cable/OTT platforms.

That clear successor was (in my view) Bob Schiffer. It looked like they were grooming John Roberts with his constant substitutions for Dan, but Bob was better. I like that he kept Rather’s exact same theme, graphics, and set design with a few formatting tweaks added. Im being repetitive but Bob should’ve stuck on CBSEN until his retirement. Perhaps they thought he was “too old” to be their star anchor? But that’s pure speculation.

Norah and Katie exemplify that success in the mornings don’t necessarily translate to be evenings, or elsewhere.

Linsey Davis is showing real promise at ABC!

  3. According to a Fox News article (obviously CNN isn’t their favorite) New Day ratings are struggling to hit 500K viewers. Yahoo & the Wrap confirm this as well. Yahoo reports that Morning Joe pulls averages 903K, Fox & Friends 1.1M. Both Fox & Yahoo are blaming the anchor shuffling at New Day, especially after Brianna Keiler began anchoring.

Personally, New Day and CNN in general are too politically charged. Morning Joe isn’t much better, it’s single subject focus on Trump and the right are obsessive and repetitive. Fox & Friends, not my favorite either,  of course has theirs specific audience.

  4. We’ve reached the two year mark with Norah as anchor and the face of CBS News. Personally, I don’t think she’s the worst nor do I think she’s the best. In reality who else does CBS News have?

Again I ask are you all satisfied off dissatisfied with the current state of CBSEN?

The only thing I agree with was the Ann Curry situation. Ann Curry and Matt Lauer had zero chemistry together hosting Today but I was one of the few that dipped out Once Ann was canned.

The article discusses how ratings are the "lowest" it has ever been in 30 years. Reaching below 3 millions viewers. However, ratings are down as a whole on all Morning Shows. I believe part of the reason why the ratings are down because, the news is depressing, over sensationalized and they never really get down to the facts. I do think the Olympics might help some in the coming weeks. What are you all thoughts?

Ann and Matt had zero chemistry. Ann to her credit is a serious newswoman and should have remained as the newsreader. BUT as much as I’m warming up to Savannah, Ann was superior. I just wish Meredith would have never left!

Once Ann was out, coupled with the reformatting of Today when Studio 1A went from orange to blue around 2013, marked a sharp quality decline in the program. Add that against the team of Robin/George/Josh/Lara/Sam on GMA, and there was no going back for Today. Worse yet, Today is severely dumbed down compared to the days of Jane, Bryant , Matt and Katie.

CBS This Morning is the best on the air right now and deserves to be #1. I agree that morning news ratings are down as a whole because of changing viewer habits and the litany of depressing news over the past decade. COVID and the Election on repeat became annoying after a while. Moreover, the quality of tv shows from as a whole from cable to broadcast isn’t as good as it used to be IMO.

  6. I like Bill but I’ve gotten that vibe from him too. Everyone said it best already, its one thing to say “sad story” or “tragic” bit its another to insert your outright opinion. Perhaps because he knows retirement is not far off, he’s more comfortable editorializing.

I agree that a lot of the anchoring today is monotone and just reading the story, case and point Steve Lacy on Fox 5. At least when I say I want an anchor to add a personality I mean like Roz Abrams or Sue Simmons who used to add flare, voice inflections and charisma when they read the news, not their personal political opinions.

Rosanna Scotto (and of course Sukanya Khrisnan did so as well) does this a lot on Good Day New York (but for the other political team). Lori always tried to keep it straight news woman when she read stories on Good Day from what I saw.

They have reporters they could bring in to co-anchor if they felt it was necessary to have two people. Jen Maxfield did at least one 4pm broadcast this past week according to her IG. They have not been using a replacement co-anchor on TINY recently, either. Maybe still limiting due to Covid-19? They do bring in Emily West to sub for Lauren on traffic during her frequent days off, so obviously not a concern there. But it's more important to have someone doing traffic than it is to have a second anchor.

Thats crazy that they’ve had 1 anchor doing TINY solo some mornings. Are the purse strings that tight at 30 Rock??

  8. Seems like they've been doing all the afternoon/evening newscasts with solo anchors for the past week or so. This has been said so many times but...just assign a fifth evening anchor.

Just to clarify that peacock variant is actually a transition as the L3 comes into view. It starts out colorful over the whole L3 then shrinks down to the bottom and transitions to 2 shades of blue and red for breaking news at the bottom. It doesn't stay that way. I was trying to capture the transition element although I really wouldn't mind seeing it like this.

It would be nice if that was the actual color scheme all the time and not just the transition. It looks really good.

  10. Weary of the flat white box look as always, but not bad! NBC again proves it self to be the best of the bunch graphically, even in the flatness era.

The peackock color variant below the white box is a nice touch especially. It reminds me of the WNBC light spectrum graphics from the mid 00s:

I’m glad that they eighty-sixed the white bar (except for weather) that used to occupy unnecessary real estate at the top and bottom of the screen. More of an actual picture now.

I mean it’s likely who he always was even during his GDNY days. People don’t just suddenly become racist morons, they just stop trying to hide their true feelings.

It was clear he and Rosanna were chummy with Trump, but I never imagined Kelly was this radical.

  12. Why Greg whyyy? He leaves a high rated morning show on a number 1 market Fox O&O to pedal conspiracy theories on a low brow far right cable network that most of the country hasn’t even heard about?

It would be nice to have Greg back but his image is definitely tainted. As for Dave Price…it’s just that he was not Greg Kelly. Greg & Ro had an unmatched chemistry and made the simplest things on the show like a cheap Halloween or Super Bowl party, interesting.

Mike Jerrick turns 71 next month, if anything, he'll be retiring soon. He co-hosted a morning show with Juliet Huddy for a year or three.

Mike Jerrick is that old! Wow!

  14. It’s time for them to get back their actual desk or an entire studio remodel to take it a step further. WCBS has the best set in the market right now, I’d say WNYW is the only one that comes close.

  15. Fat chance but....Mike Jerrik from WTXF would be an awesome fit. If my memory serves me right, didn't he anchor with the always-bouncing-around-stations Jodi Applegate briefly  in the mid 00s?

Speaking of Jodi, it would be cool to have her back on WNYW again, on GDNY Wake Up if possible.

  16. I don’t think Fox 5 has anyone right now with a strong enough personality to anchor next to Rosanna at Good Day. They need to seek outside talent. I wasn’t a fan of the Dave Price/Rosanna Scotto reshuffling, but Dave Price might as well have stayed on the job if Greg Kelly was just going to leave in a few years. At the very least we got 2 to 3 more years of Greg and Rosanna after he came back.

I think the only way Lori would have fit into the evenings on WABC is taking over Diana Williams’ slot —after her retirement —otherwise the lineup was solid as it was.

I agree with the idea of Lori at 5 & 10, but I think they need another anchor duo for the 6:00 broadcast. IMO It gets repetitive seeing the same face over three different broadcasts. Steve needs to be replaced next. Currently I think WCBS & WABC has the best 5o’clock pairing, and WNBC & WABC have the best 6:00 pairings.

The reason why flat design is everywhere is because young people, like myself, prefer it. Since companies are desperate to appeal to us, they feel the need to make their branding and graphics as flat as possible.

I never understood the need for news to rely on gaudy 3D effects and lens flares. The story should be front and center, the graphics should only supplement it. When I watch or read the news, I want to be informed, not distracted by unnecessary clutter.

Sports are for entertainment, so they make the graphics entertaining to watch. News is meant to inform about serious topics, so I prefer flatter and subdued graphics. I’m not saying it’s bad for news graphics to be creative, but it shouldn’t take away from the main subject.

Because this is tv, I'd argue that decoration is as important as substance.  I myself don't like overly ornate graphics like ABC and NBC News's, but I disagree with the idea that ESPN level sets and quality of graphics will take away from a newscast.

Good example of shine vs flat:

  18. I noticed this trend as well in an old videos from the Eyewitness News vault. From the tone of their '92 Gotti verdict coverage, it was clear they believed (and rightfully so) that John Gotti deserved to be behind bars. I was surprised at their lack of neutrality on the issue, as evidenced by some of the metaphors that (specifically) Jim Dolan used in his report. On the flip side, I love the colorful language that they used in their coverage. It felt engaging rather than just someone reading current events to you.
