I don't think it's squandering by not doing a live show at midnight unless you are a market for one of the teams (Which in Cali, where both late teams are, it was regular late news time). Those who just casually wanted the headlines and weather found another station to watch, or looked online, and went to bed. Would be interesting to see who did pre-tape. In many cases, it makes sense to tape- I think of some of the Gray Duos in my area (KSFY/KDLT, KVLY, KBJR) who normally simulcast, they likely ran the late news live on one channel and aired the tape on NBC after. How many also ran the news on their website/streamer live and taped for broadcast after the game?

Let the sharks circle... WBD has announced this morning they are officially exploring a sale after receiving "unsolicited interest" from potential buyers (cough. Paramount). NBC reports that WBD is open to splitting up the company to multiple buyers. Newser cites analysts believing that Netflix, Apple, and Amazon are also interested.

It would have to be a hella lucrative offer and offer him complete and total control over his timeslot. Between The Five and Gutfeld!, evidence is there that he gets to command just about any negotiation. I don't think CBS has the money, nor the willingness to give a host that kind of power. Someone more down-ballot at Fox News is possibly fair game.

Counterpoint... If they start one up with a cheaper host, use studio space they already own in the broadcast center with no audience, no house band- then they show that it was (in part) really because Colbert was losing money. The reality is there that Tonight, Kimmel, and Late Show all have ungodly overheads and declining viewership. Respectfully disagree. If they go longform interview without the monologue or comedy bits, there is possibly a place for it- especially at CBS. Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes have always been their cornerstones and both are more longform. Bonus points if they can take excerpts and repack them for Mornings or 24/7. It would be a good opportunity for a show that throws softballs a la Larry King... People don't want hard news and political lectures late night.

It's not too far out... It's typically been green-lit to add them a few months prior to the games, which start in February (116 days away, per Google). Could very easily see Hearst saying with the new graphics to just flip to the olympics logo while they were at it. I'd guess we will see the network start to add them in once we hit the 100 day mark.

And there is a litmus for this in the Late-Late interim between Ferguson and Corden where the couple weeks Regis Philbin hosted, CTM's set was used and Regis did the 1 on 1 longform interview. The current Morning set could easily handle that on the daily.

Don Jorgensen, who has been with KELO since 1990 Will retire at the end of November. https://www.keloland.com/news/local-news/longtime-keloland-anchor-reporter-to-retire/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_KELOLAND_News&fbclid=IwdGRleANWZFBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHiWMv8BKNXNaUCqOr2itO4E4qslqM8pnKTmHsBB7t_EJX2Ghsen8M8J03Zkf_aem_cc75akl9qrJBpMW5A1lRqA

If I had to take a complete and total guess, gives them Thursday when everyone is still in the office and working to test everything out and make tweaks and adjustments before going into the weekend. Most newsrooms see Friday and Saturday as the "slow" days for viewership, with an uptick on Sunday evenings around the football games. That said, I could see Hearst using the Noon shows as the "trial run" with the ability to make any urgent adjustments before the evening shows that day, and then let 'em buck going into the weekend with the hopes of a) they're more polished going into the first full week, and b) don't have to have anyone in over the weekend adjusting them.

Are you surprised? It is no different than getting your product on an endcap at Walmart or Target... Everything's location in a retail store is carefully planned, and usually negotiated. Pay the company more money, get better positioning on the shelf. Is it fair, right, just? Of course not. But alas one of the benchmarks of capitalism

I get that Fox News is the low hanging fruit here, but it is so much more than them... Look at and blame the algorithms on Facebook, X, TikTok, etc., that curate headlines and suggestions for everyone based on what they interact with, and give a much broader scope of bias and lower standard for quality in reporting than any broadcast or cable outlet. This will continue to spiral as broadcast and cable outlets are hemorrhaging younger viewers who are instead getting their news from social media (namely, TikTok).

Can all of us here agree that watching adult material at work is wrong? Especially when you work in broadcasting? Especially especially on a work computer? Someone might want to share that wisdom over at 1010 WINS... ShittyRadioJock has audio that seems like someone was watching porn on a company machine, and it broadcast over the air during the weather report. And Reddit has a thread confirming that the audio was really over the air.

Okay, cool. However I noted that the ticker is covering about half of the L3. Nothing life or death, all of us here know that there at always some glitches when you do a live rollout.
-
KMBC has some issues with their ticker overlapping as well, but agreed! Good rollout!

Sorry for the probable paywall on the link... But turns out KVLY/Fargo really wanted anchor Justin Betti out... After not picking up the 5th year option on his contract, set to expire later this year, they bumped up his departure from the station after station management found out he found a new gig... No on-air good-bye or anything, just "your services are no longer needed". This can't be typical of Gray? And since the article is from the Fargo Forum, who owns KVLY's cross-town rival, they also note that this is the latest in a list of recent departures and shifts for the station as well. While not shutting down completely, WDSE/Duluth is sunsetting their local public affairs show "Almanac North" that airs after, and mirrors "Almanac" from KTCA/Minneapolis. Almanac North got rebooted with a new set and hosts last year after the retirement of longtime hosts Julie Zenner and Dennis Anderson in 2023. Funding cuts have been cited for the reason. https://www.fox21online.com/2025/09/23/pbs-north-to-conclude-almanac-north/

I think much of what has been discussed behind closed doors will be evident on the show tomorrow night. If Kimmel comes out in the classic form, Either Nexstar caved, or ABC just doesn't care what they think. If Kimmel comes out a bit more subdued (which I still believe all the late night hosts [Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Gutfeld, and Stewart] should do to some degree), it points to all parties really had a grown up productive conversation where everyone gave some concessions in exchange for some wins. Variables: The Disney+ cancellations (how many really? Who knows), How did a Family Feud rerun do in Kimmel's slot ratings-wise, Tensions through the roof, again, with bullets fired at KXTV (should have concerned everyone at the table), and do we know if any other affiliates voiced their opinion behind the scenes? Hearst? Gray? Scripps?

This is what I have been coming back to as I think about the situation (as I desperately try to not think about it, and have tried to stay away). Johnny, Letterman, and Leno all took their political jabs when the news of the day called for it, but the timing and the joke had to be right, and both sides were fair game for a punchline as warranted. Johnny Carson also did warn about the dangers of taking political stances in the position of a late night host. As I have reflected, the constant politics is why I've turned off late night shows. When Leno returned to the airwaves post 9/11, he equated The Tonight Show to a cookie and a glass of lemonade for a firefighter working a recovery shift in New York City- a break from all that is dark, dour, and negative around us. We all need a break from the constant news cycle and cesspool that has become the Facebook comments section. Kimmel used to do YouTube challenges that breathed new life into funny home videos, and Fallon with his sketch comedy- all were a nice end of the day break for many of us. For the record, I do not think what Kimmel said warranted the suspension- He has said worse. However, he also celebrated the cancellation of Roseanne Barr and Tucker Carlson's shows for opinions they have spewed that were deemed offensive to their detractors. I am not here to suggest what one celebrity has said is better or worse than the other- the common denominator with each is that what was said upset a faction of the public general and lead to that celebrity being sanctioned by their respective employer. The root of the issue in this thread is the quid-pro-quo at the FCC- not Kimmel, not people being upset over comments. If we really cancelled hosts for tasteless jokes, Letterman would have gotten canned for his remarks about Sarah Palin's daughter in 2009. But alas- he conceded it was a poor joke, offered an apology, and life seemed to move on. This time, however, you have the issue of Mr. Carr that has been lamented to exhaustion on this board and a station group that wants approval to continue to consume more competitors. There is your issue. At the end of the day- Kimmel, and all hosts have the ability to say what they want, and it is the viewer's choice whether or not to watch- The remote is a powerful voting tool and there's plenty of tv to watch out there. But also, as viewership declines across the genre leading to lower advertising revenue, perhaps accompanying the Backstreet Boys with Fisher Price instruments or coercing viewers to pull pranks on their family might not be that bad of an idea. Laugh emoji away...

Indeed, when you look at the Neilsen Toplines (the data that is publicly available), WHEL has seen impressive gains even over the summer going up over a point, with a consistent trend putting them in a firm 2nd Place in the genre. Renda's WWGR and iHeart's WCKT have slid, albeit at a slower rate than WHEL's gain. And hate it all you want- the Deportation A Day giveaway is creative (and apparently working) as opposed to the same $1,000 an hour keyword national contests. Bravo to their consultant on that one! Yup... Wren and Reggie were posted here last week, when it was announced. We will never hear the impetus of Wren's departure- whether it was budget or her claims against KSTP, but would be interesting to learn what happened.

Not ESPN/ABC… yet…

It was built with TikTok, Insta Reels, etc. in mind. Wait for clips from the weekend to hit the FYP. They sized it for phones.
