  1. Let the whole Jim Gardner retiring thing settle before they start making other changes to the newscast, but to your point yes- it's likely they will make some modifications to the newscast at some point. That was already tried in the MySpace era.
  2. Also... No need for that pesky ticker anymore. Any other game you care about can be tracked on your favorite sports network's app. It gives developers more space on screen to work with.
  3. What the heck is "divisive" supposed to mean? I mean I get what the word means, but how far into left field are they really going?
  4. First thought- Okay, for the market, these are great morning/midday graphics that play off of what ABC is doing with GMA... Until I looked it up that this is a CBS station. Definitely not saying that all affiliates should use their network's O&O package, but c'mon- don't go for something that looks like your competition's network newscast...
  5. It's that way for all of their newspaper holdings. Back when WDAZ-TV (Grand Forks) was it's own entity (Pre-2016ish) WDAY still provided the weather for all of the newscasts (pre-taped) That said, they have seven mets in Fargo- Need something to keep them all busy. Forum should see the writing on the wall that they're not going to get KVRR/KQDS from Red River approved... That deal was announced WAY before this one
  6. Maybe not fired, but certainly reassigned. It's hard for them to deliver objective news of the day when they, themselves, are the topic and attention of the news.
  7. Variety reports that Chris Licht is planning more changes at CNN- revamped daytime lineup and *gasp* no more sitting behind a desk, among other things... https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/cnn-daytime-overhaul-newsroom-headquarters-chris-licht-1235483637/
  8. And it's dragging on longer than the Tegna deal. Another pocket veto in the works by the FCC.
  9. Nothing like kicking off the second hour of GMA with this! Started at the top of the hour, Went for 5 minutes and now just a black screen as I’m posting this. Network issue, or KSTP issue? If the issue is on KSTP’s end, kind of surprised they didn’t flip to a simulcast if their local show on KSTC while troubleshooting.
  10. Not usually around a TV during the morning news- but some time off this week gives me the opportunity. Landed on CBS Mornings. Wasn't the whole point of this show to "put the news back in morning news" and differentiate themselves from Today and GMA? The time I spent watching was just a store-brand version of the other two shows- Same gossipy host-chat, "CBS Morning Deals" giving some paid-placement to product no one really needs, using songs like "Bye Bye Bye" as the closing bumper music, and that was just the 15-20 minutes that I caught. I feel when the show was still CTM before moving to Times Square, they had a solid, and reasonably unique product, despite still being in third place- what happened?
  11. Soapbox rant- but as much of the country has been dealing with record cold, and other localized issues, one thing that I've noticed is the new trend of TV stations "issuing" (insert weather branding here) "Alert Days". Some people are in serious danger- and the National Weather Service is doing (I think) a good job trying to keep the national Christmas Tree of watches/warnings/advisories clear and concise. Tv stations are diluting that for a cheap attempt at ratings points by starting a newscast with "We have issued a weather alert day for tomorrow". How long until viewers start tuning out the over sensationalizing of severe/extreme weather as just station hype putting communities into real danger? Directors/Managers- What's the logic and reasoning behind issuing "alert days" beyond the watches/warnings from NWS? Genuinely curious. Full disclosure- I've noticed this on my local CBS and Gray-owned stations.
  12. The WMUR update aside, Hearst's package is one that has aged incredibly gracefully over the years.
  13. Anyone else getting Tegna vibes from the L3's?
  14. And just like with the ABC logo change, the average viewer will not notice or care as long as Lester Holt and The Voice are on the same channel they've always been on.
  15. Hot take- In the era of Google Maps and Waze, having traffic reports in newscasts at all makes no sense. As for the what already happened part, that's just news.
  16. Not a bad stroll down memory lane... Sorry for those who get PTSD
  17. How did they handle it? Split-Screen?
  18. There's got to (hopefully) be an explanation- but I just watched WCCO's 6pm newscast- Weather was the pre-recorded online/streaming quickcast with only the audio of the meteorologist who recorded it- showed temps and outlook- no radar/satellite/etc. When they panned the set- weather center was empty and you could see the log-in screen on the computers. I get it's a holiday weekend, but as a certain blogger says- the weather is the most important part of the newscast (and I agree!). The #1 station, with 5 meteorologists, in Market 15, and they couldn't have someone there to forecast the weather?
  19. That's what KMSP did here in MN... 7-9 Central was all on WFTC.
  20. Some free advice to CBS O&O stations- when getting the new mic flags with the CBS News [city] on them, go for the three-sided one so people have a shot of actually reading what it says. its CBS Los Angeles by the way.
  21. As long as the network can keep selling it, they will keep running it. Basic economics.
  22. I'm not. Think of all the unforeseen issues that are likely to happen with the launch (like anytime a station launches a new graphics package, for example, let alone a whole new newscast). Having those issues right before the biggest story of the year when viewership is up and more eyeballs to catch a possible major issue makes for a bad first impression. Recent example is KSAZ last night testing their election ticker... And whoever runs that for them probably isn't brand new to the job.
  23. I'm waiting for Audacy to drop the hammer in Minneapolis next. "The Wolf" has only once ever beat K102 (iHeart) in the PPM ratings (and it was under their old country branding as Buz'n 102.9) and is the weakest of Audacy's three stations in the cluster (Jack-FM does really well here). Wolf just tweaked from "New Country" to "Everything Country" (That's New Country with a LOT of Shania Twain, by the way). Given the NY Move, guessing if this tweak doesn't instill life, WCCO 830 and 102.9 becomes reality very soon. There have also been moves to upgrade the talent on 830 in the last year including plucking popular WCCO-TV anchor Jason DeRusha to host afternoon drive. Ironically, 102.9 began life as WCCO-FM playing lite rock... Where else does Audacy need to find and FM for talk? KRLD in Dallas?
  24. Here's the rebrand of KBJR to "Northern News Now"- Shockingly managed to rebrand a whole station and not upgrade to the Gray graphics package. Instead, they rehashed the KBJR Quincy package. Take note behind the weather desk you can see they're working on the Gray wx graphics at least.
  25. That makes two of us... Add in the Gray "honeycomb" graphics package and they'll really have something! I look forward to the facebook comments from the Karens on Monday.
