Jess 1115 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 ..but you don't have to use it as your breaking news chime. Especially when your stations tend to send out breaking news alerts everytime someone farts. Of course it's my fault because I have multiple Hearst apps installed on my phone whilst not being in a Hearst market but still...
TVNewsLover 802 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Is this really a worthy topic/discussion to start a new a new thread for?

The really weird thing is stations like WDSU were using the Strive sound clip for their breaking news alerts long before the stations themselves got the actual package for their newscasts.

Here's the really good part, I think KMBC uses the badadum with the remaninder on percussion on the strive music package for breaking news.

Are the Hearst apps out of a centralized area at WESH's studio or something? Someone just goes into iTunes and plays a track over and over sending out "breaking news alerts"
susquvalleywgal 524 Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 If you think that is bad ... download the WNEP app ... they have their 'Action News-ish' theme spun up at like 1000 miles per hour. I was sleeping and got woke up by it ... Not good.

They probably have access to the cuts. iTunes does not factor.
Jess 1115 Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 Yeah, apparently you can bundle a custom alert tone with your app now. Can't believe NBC hasn't used the opportunity to shove the chimes into their news apps. Meanwhile, BBC added push notifications... and they use the last second or so of their open as their alert sound. Just for that, they are awesome.

Could you possibly even imagine hearing the Death Chimes when the NBC News app alerts you of breaking news? It. Would be with you. And follow you. Everywhere.

Samantha 2907 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 The Death Chimes need to be reserved for...well, death. I still recall Tim Russert's death. NBC was airing a golf tournament, and the hosts of the golf tournament very casually tossed to an NBC News Special Report. Then it was the chimes. I had just gotten out of the shower, and once I heard that, I knew something very serious was about to go down. Then I saw Tom Brokaw, and I was baffled. I was drying myself from the shower and had just picked up a towel. I dropped it at the news of Tim Russert's death. It's a powerful moment to hear the chimes. It is one of worldwide television's greatest attention signals, of the "uh-oh, something really big has happened" variety. And it will always be that way.

I can't believe FOX News hasn't used the ALERT sound. I mean goodness, they use it for everything else.
