CBS New Graphics Apparenly Revealed

I'm not posing a link to the leaked video publicly, but YES there is a new CBS O&O package, and yes, it is almost ready to launch.

First off, the graphics are heavily inspired by Look F, probably the WCAU version, but also feature refined elements taken from the previous look - i.e. the "details bar" and their unique sports score graphic. The Breaking News, etc. stings are based on what's being used now. Lowers aren't that different save for an opaque "box" color ala Scripps.

Arial is nowhere to be found. Graphics use varying weights of Gotham. For some reason they're using Gotham Ultra Black on the lowers.

There is a wider array of colors being used during the newscast. Blue is the main hue but brighter and accentuated by gold highlights. There is a "red mode" now for Breaking News coverage.

Yes, there is more than one background, including a rather flat one used for full-screens. The giant glass eye isn't being used for everything anymore.

This isn't flat design, but I'd call it clean. The full-screen and especially weather designs bring back memories of WBBM's fantastic 2002 package. Very well laid out typography.

Overall, I'd call it a solid look, but clearly an evolution, not a revolution of what they had before.

Launch date? Well, KYW has started using this stuff in promotions, particularly to promote Jessica Dean's arrival on the 22nd. I'm willing to bet that this is the date.

I imagine that is when WCBS will officially roll out the "golden 2" that they've been using more and more in their promos.

I'll be anxious to see how KDKA works with it since they seem to get creative with what they're handed to them.

WBZ has been using Gotham in news promos for some time...

Also worth noting is (1) new coffee mugs that began appearing on the morning news a couple of months ago; they are red with the Gotham font; (2) WBZ is using the "Eye+4" logo outside of newscasts far more frequently now.

Yeah. After seeing photos now of the new package, this is essentially a modified version of Look F. If I was NBC (Artworks), I would a) be flattered that I created a package apparently so nice that my competitors are trying to copy and  be pissed that my competitors are trying to take a look that I worked so hard on and try to pass it off as an original idea.

Although, I will say, it's a VAST improvement over what they all have now!

As many of you mentioned, it does look a lot like NBC graphic package but it also has some elements from KCBS 2008 package to me. I will say I'm glad they are updating them soon because I dislike the current one because it's so plain. I wonder if they are going to change CBS Evening News graphics as well since they been around since 2009 with minor updates.

My opinion may change after seeing them in action on KCNC, but as of right now I'm not a fan. Granted, the current look is dated and needs to be replaced...

To me, this package is more of a logical update to the former KCNC 2007 package (for which the previous set was built). You can see many similar elements here: http://vimeo.com/10732048

UPDATE: After digging around a bit. I turned up this:

  • http://vimeo.com/42439236 - This is a lengthy video of the new WLNY graphics posted by the CS Director at CBS
  • http://vimeo.com/41133269 -This is a shorter version posted by the developer of both the WLNY graphics and the new CBS affiliate graphics, Blue Helio.

The upload stamps on those say they were a year old. Must have been concepts they were considering from when they were first launcing the station. The look looks like it was based off the current look with a reverse color palatte more than anything else. Reminds me of KCAL's look.

NO MORE ARIAL!! YEEESSSSS!!! That being said, it's hard, based on the stills, to see if this GFX deserves more than the "lol Look F ripoff" vibe I'm getting. Is this an improvement? Absolutely. However, I think I'll reserve my final opinion until I see the graphics in action.
