Guest Former Member 207
I know a few of us (myself included) would venture over to the message boards at radiodiscussions.com (formerly part of radio-info.com) as an alternate to boards like this one to talk about the goings-on in the television world, whether it be current stuff or reading those old retro schedules from different cities across North America (there were even old TV schedules from other parts of the world). I went to check this morning (just a few minutes before writing this post), and on the splash page, it said that the site was shut down effectively immediately, and it sounds like it's for good. It's pretty shocking to say the least, especially since the site was working yesterday and no notice was given about about RD shutting down, at least from what I seen. I remember it wasn't an easy transition of the message boards from Radio-info, mainly due to login issues and the formatting. However, I did like that it was an alternate to talk about TV whether it be local or national. It was good while it lasted, but life goes on... Samantha 2896
A sad loss. The RD boards had some of the greatest characters, particularly the Phoenix radio board with its 175-page epic thread about KAZG and its "lamptimer". Oh, Dr. Akbar and Nurse Jeff, the Esteemed Middle Eastern Men of the Media. Your Sports Parkinglots [sic], Gremlins, 5~Fiftys and unexpected "YIKES"! What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports are we ever going to do with you, Dr. Akbar? Your Buckeye Media Hut is gone! ...In all seriousness, this isn't my first "I've spent years on this board and it shut down, without much explanation, one morning" rodeo. That was six years ago. I also see some growth for TVNT on this news; RD had more boards than TVNT (notably, Atlanta and Phoenix TV boards which TVNT doesn't have, as well as some statewide ones—the Texas one always got a lot of attention because it consolidated a bunch of different markets, and there were New England and California ones as well). At the same time a lot of the general television discussion that was common in RD's television section won't really fit here. Nelson R. 569
WOW! I will miss it even though the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill board wasn't very active. I will miss the old school TV listings. Wish there had been more TV boards but it was a great forum. I agree with you as far as seeing as growth here as far as the amount of discussion and addition of members. I think the general TV discusssion (non-news) will eventually probably shift over to the Breakroom, the National, or maybe the powers-that-be here create separate forums for general and classic TV discussion. Even though in I'm in Los Angeles, I always ventured over to the other regional forums just out of curiousity and to see what else is going on in other areas of the country, and definitely the Texas board seemed to be more active, probably followed by the New York City, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Atlanta boards. TheRob 938
That's too bad. I used to trade radio airchecks with one of the founders, who passed away several years ago. SFTV 527
San Diego, LA and SF boards would be my go to after looking at TVNT and TVSpy. Sigh :/ Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13129-radiodiscussionscom-shut-down/#findComment-93961 Share on other sites
TVLurker 198
Aw... There were some fun times to be had on the board, I liked checking out LA forums for both radio and television; even though it wasn't active, I would like reading the go arounds such as how much KABC sucks or how KFI was suffering from a lucky manager. Plus there was also the national TV boards which I frequent but never posted in. I had an account there but I was afraid to post there, I guess it would of been awesome to post in such an amazing community such as RadioDiscussions. RIP. Samantha 2896
I've found one other entry on this closure. Apparently this was an economic concern, as advertisers weren't interested? Notably, satelliteguys.us has set up a "Local Radio Discussion" forum in an attempt to sign up ex-RD members, and they even contacted the owners to see if they could get the site, software and database of posts. Rusty Muck 4378
RadioInsight.com - founded and run by Radio-Info.com's co-creator, Lance Venta - has a community of discussion boards that had a soft launch a few months ago. Many of the former RD and R-I posters are starting to migrate over there. I have mixed feelings about RadioDiscussion's demise. I wound up getting banned on there because of a troll poster with a vendetta against another regular poster, but that troll wound up getting banned after I forced an intervention on the mods. Meanwhile, the whole schematic of the RD boards hadn't changed much in close to 12 years. (The exterior redo that RBR did a few months ago did nothing to change the interior of the board setup one bit.) Think about that. 12 years. The same setup, same database, and an archive of posts that spanned close to eight years. It actually is astounding that RD survived as long as it did, as after Doug Fleming passed away and Lance was forced out by Fleming's family, it should have innovated itself to keep up with the change of the industry itself (that's the purpose of the RadioInsight Community). Instead, RD became a relic, withered, and died. Which is truly a shame. Oh dear, looks like someone got bean counters involved! Love that they didn't even try to sell it off. Seems like someone just got tired of it. WAVY 10 Fan 233
That one blindsided me when I went back yesterday afternoon (had made it on a couple of hours earlier). cg41386 132
I was shocked by this. I had been a regular visitor to the Philadelphia forum, which had been in existence for well over a decade (first as an independent forum, eventually becoming part of different websites, including radio-info and radiodiscussions). Tom Wells 1
There were 10 new buzz stream posts dated 4:38 PM of "today", Also seen on home page were three options of "premium subscriber" options. Tom Wells 1
Just added the audio of "He's Dead, Jim" to my pt 15 AM station playlist. Priceless..... thnx Since "Radio-whatsis-of the moment" has been dead I've leaned heavily into obscure Lawrence Welk songs and ancient organ roller-skating muisc 78's. I'm still working on gettin in some sea shanties. This is my way of mourning like Radio Moscow used to do when a supreme leader expired. Maybe I'll get some airchex up on pod-o- in a while with all this newer old obscure stuff. I can't say how they could expect to bring back the sizzle without adding something more somehow. Guest Former Member 207
I hate to bump this thread up, and I didn't think this would warrant a separate thread, but I'm sure as many of you who post on RadioDisscussions have noticed lately that the site is really starting to deteriorate in the TV boards, because of a couple of idiots wanting to overtake the boards with a bunch of political talk for whatever reason. One of the idiots in particular wants the moderators to make changes to the board structure, and also bitches and moans about a lot of posts--someone basically with too much time on his hands. Personally, I don't give a shit one way or the other about politics as a whole, as I don't think you can trust either major political party, but whatever. I'm not in the TV business, but I'm a life-long enthuaist of the medium, and I like that I can find other people who share a common interest in the way that television works...business, technical stuff, personalities, stories, and so on. I guess it's starting showing more and more in my growing disinterest in social media as whole; I have zero problem with someone who has differing opinions (hell, that's life in general), but I do when someone wants to rant and rave, and spew bullshit without any substance. I usually just ignore that kind of stuff unless it really hits home...but at least if I speak on something, I'll have something to back me up.
