WPIX Sweeps

The thing is Marysol/Dan and Tamsen/Scott are really good.. Kori and Suki not so much.. But if they improved everything else they'd have potential I don't understand what management doesn't get.

I really like Marysol & Dan anchoring together think they do a great job...too bad Dan is getting demoted back to street reporter and eventually leaving the station altogether. Tamsen & Scott are good too. Anxious to see who they hire for the 11 AM shows and the weekend morning shows.

Scott and Tamsen are too phony.

She's not authentic and as a journalist is weak. Too much Botox.

He doesn't have the news chops either.

They have reporter issues too.

What they need is a ND who knows talent.

Effron has missed the mark completely.

A lot of people blame the stations woes on Carey but Effron has dug them into an even deeper hole.

Odds are brass has started a quiet search for a ND. They're gonna need a turn around specialist. Effron hadn't been in a newsroom since 2006. And every manager he brought in was either on the beach or demoted at 11.

I thought I was the only one who didn't care for them as the #1 team at a station in NYC. I'd take Steve and Dari over them anyday (and that's saying a lot).

I don't know if it is the anchors approach or the scenes behind the background, but PIX News at 10pm newscast comes off with a light attitude especially at the top of the newscast. It lacks a serious approach not like when Jim and Laity anchored the newscast.

I don't particularly care for Scott and Tamsen either. I wonder how someone thought that a relationship expert (Tamsen) and a wrestling commentator (Scott) would make a good primary anchor team. Especially in the nation's top market.

I would like to see actual numbers, but it's clear that WNYW is mopping the floor with WPIX.

Yes, Bill Carey wrecked the news operation. I was actually rooting for Mark Effron to turn things around, but perhaps it's time that new general manager Rich Graziano send him packing.

Practically everything is wrong with Channel 11...Bad set, worse news themes, graphics that could be made on Final Cut Pro. They have some good reporters, but I don't see most of them as potential anchor material. They didn't have this problem pre-2010.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the numbers don't pick up come May.

The way the news operation is now it seems as if they are throwing in the towel with making changes. No word yet on them getting a new set, and they have been running promos with new graphics forever, however they have failed to make it to the actual newscast. And no new theme in sight. I just wonder if they will actually go forth with making a weekend morning and 11am newscast. Sure, Scott and Tamsen aren't ideal anchors by any means, but at least they have a better sense of humor than Steve and Dari. And let's face it people do not turn into PIX to expect anything serious. The only thing that they did post-2010 that was impressive coverage-wise was the boston bombings and James Ford's reporting. PIX does have some decent reporters in my view, as "channel7fan" pointed out. And PIX annoys me with it's weather teases during the 10pm weeknight broadcast. They must do at least 5 weather teases before they actually show the 7 day forecast. And 5 times out of 10 they run out of time, because they wait until the last second. People might as well just watch the 11:00 news. You'll probably see the 7 day way before you see it on PIX, if you even see it at all. It's time for Mr. G to go. However, there's no ideal person in line to replace him, so I get that they are keeping him. And they would have to take Craig Allen off his radio position at 880 after so many years. But that still might happen. But at the rate these changes are going right now, I'd be very surprised if I saw these changes done by the fall sweeps!

(BTW the only other encouraging thing graphic-wise is that they did update the graphic that they use for their "around the boroughs" segment during their 5pm broadcast. It has a darker blue background, which is way better than what they have now but not impressive. I also think they should at least change their "live" bugs to red, so it's more obvious that it's live).

As I stated in a previous topic, WPIX is currently under a newsroom/studio reconstruction which is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter.

http://www.rew-online.com/2013/09/05/tribune-taps-team-for-wpix-role/

This may the reason for no changes as of yet - why build anything new if the area is going to be reconstructed? Which brings up another possible scenario: plan for a reboot when everything is new after the completion of the construction. No use bringing in new people when visually everything is same. This also coincides with the dates targeted for the premiere of the 11AM and weekend morning newscasts.

My Opinions:

1. The trouble with all of their newscasts is that the repeat the same old stories all day. There live shots are a joke - there should be only live shots when new information is breaking - standing on the corner all day and saying the same thing drives me nuts

2. They do not have enough news stories. With all the stories happening in this city they can't add a few more.

3. It is nice that WPIX helps people, but they should have stories that would help a large number of people in the tri-state area . Help me Howard should a separate show.

4. Stop giving your opinions between stories and keep the BS banter to a minimum

5. AND MOST OF ALL - BE AUTHORITATIVE and stop trying to be my drinking buddy

I feel that WPIX does something that moves the station in the right direction, and then all of the sudden takes a step back. For example, yesterday, they somewhat debuted new transition graphics, but today during the 6PM broadcast, they used the old ones. It's almost as if they are not comfortable with their decisions and they take it back right away. The station has improved slightly, but there's no real difference. And the management is a joke. During their 6PM newscast yesterday, Kaity introduced us and said 'hello everyone i'm kaity tong." and then looked so confused immediately after and had no idea what to do. Kaity is an excellent anchor, and it's terrible that she has to put up with such horrible management. I feel so bad for her, and that she has to make decisions on what to say to viewers live when WPIX is not prepared for their newscasts, which seem to be happening every other night. As for the weeknight newscast, it's horrible and that's all there is to it. Here's what needs to be changed:

1. Tamsen and Scott are OK as a team, but less talk in between stories and more news.

2. Try to get better management. Effron is really not taking them to the next level at all. I'm sure people like Kaity are very embarrassed having to put up with such BS.

3. Get rid of Mr. G. He covers up half the map and mumbles the weather to viewers. He gives way to many teases, so WPIX has to cut back on the weather segments. All you need is to check in with the weather dpt 2 times, one tease, and one full forecast. That's it. Don't give me 5 teases, and then run out of time for the seven day forecast, which happens multiple times a week. They need to get a, somewhat younger, more experienced meteorologist who's communicates well with viewers. Craig Allen would be perfect but I don't know if he'll quit his job at WCBS 880.

4. Get new music graphics, set and the whole 9 yards. They seem to have new graphics in the working, so that's positive news. But I don't think a reboot is necessary. To me, some type of news is better than nothing. But they should really get rid of lionel and his commentary segments that nobody can understand.

5. IMO, Help me howard is fine, I like his segments. WPIX already has done things that help a large number of people in the area, especially after Sandy. A mary murphy mystery is also not a bad segment.

6. Do more sports. I'm not a fan at all of Scott doing sports and news. They haven't done any sports in a while. And just when I though Dyrol Joyner was going to do sports for weekends, I haven't seen him since the super bowl. They need to create a solid sports team, and have them focus just on sports. Also, Andy Adler has made an appearance a couple of times, but since the superbowl, I haven't really seen her again. She's also a news/sports anchor.

7. Launch a 6PM newscast with maybe kaity? or someone else, even Marvin Scott might work. It's too bad they got rid of Jackie Hyland, Peter Thorne, and Jim Watkins, they were excellent anchors.

8. Get rid of Suki on the morning team. Frances was the better of the bunch, and it's too bad they kicked her out. Put Kirsten Cole on to replace her.

(and is Dan Mannarino leaving or what? I see he has been taken out of the "where every story hits home" promos, but they still keep a video of him reporting. He is still sitting at the anchor desk, so I wonder when they plan on taking him of it).

AMEN to both of these posts.

And I agree, a 6pm newscast would be perfect and Kaity could/should solo it. Mr. G absolutely needs to go, move Linda to evening and have Chris Knowles do the whole morning.

Frankly, anything anyone says on this site is better than what they are doing. They need a fire up their asses and they need to decide what they are. Are they the PIX 11 News or are they PIX 11 Entertainment. Either is ok, but they need to choose one, take it and run. If they don't want to be in the news business, that's fine, but then don't be on one story all day and not cover another important one.

Since they can't get their act together, If I was head of CW NY, I would try to partner with Eyewitness News and see if they can do some extra newscasts on channel 11 from 7-9am and 10pm just like the CW Philly. If they aren't going to get serious, it's not worth their money to put on this show they have now that they want to call news.

This is excatly my point with PIX news teams I would dump these awful so called newscasters Linda Church, Mr G, Tamsen Fadal, Suki Krishnan, Marysol Castro for starters Tamsen belongs on some fashion show.

At this point, I'm hoping WPIX does bad in the sweeps, this way they can get rid of Mark Effron and get a ND who knows what he's doing. At this point, I think this is the more likely scenario, because according to Tuned In, if WPIX does bad in the sweeps, he's out of there. BTW, if you stream a newscast online, does this count towards the ratings? Although this is pretty needless to say, I advise nobody to watch, this way they can get a new ND.

The Morning Contests are embarrassing, a white flag that they have given up all hope of competing with competency. Marc Effron has not made one good talent decision and needs to go. Scott and Tamsen seem like nice people, neither is a major market main anchor.
