Big Country News 435
Via Facebook, it seems that Thomas Roberts is the first openly gay man to anchor an evening newscast for a major network. Here's an article I pulled from Facebook's trending feature. http://www.advocate.com/media/2015/07/18/watch-reporting-tonight-thomas-roberts-first-out-gay-man-anchor-network-news Darn! I wanted this milestone.
Mannym13 15
I really like that there's no weekend anchor set in stone. I don't see it as inconsistency but as a way for NBC News to show just how deep their talent is, and it's DEEP. Anchoring the weekend edition is also a good way to get people some more time on air. People that have anchored on weekends Carl Quintanilla Peter Alexander Kate Snow Thomas Roberts Craig Melvin Erica Hill Willie Geist Savannah Guthrie sometimes ***I personally wish Harry Smith was given a few more chances***

wabceyewitness 767
Was it weird that I just saw a Nightly News promo on CNN? Most likely NBC bought local ad time on your local cable operator. Cable stations give time to providers like TWC, Fios, etc to sell local ads.

He seems really uncomfortable at the desk. I'd like to see Thomas Roberts get Saturday's.
memnews 36
Unusual split anchoring arrangement tonight... the voiceover said Craig Melvin was reporting tonight, but about half of the broadcast was Thomas Roberts live in Oregon tossing to other reporters for the college shooting coverage. NBC better worship the ground Lester walks in for saving them from being a laughing stock.

I don't think Thomas Roberts has the gravitas for evening news, he fits more into cable realm.
nynewsjunkie 13
I wonder why they haven't updated the Sunday open to include Kate Snow's name?
24994J 5276
Under the split anchor weekend format, ABC and CBS do not tag on the anchor's names to the open, so it's not surprising that NBC is following suit.
TVNewsLover 727
They seem to be switching throngs up for some reason. Natalie has not read News Briefs In The First Hour for Three Days now for whatever reason. I have to admit frankly kind of bothers me a little Wrong thread??

rkolsen 1678
What studio is that? Doesn't look like 3C? It's one of NBC's insert studios that is used for weekend Nightly News and other purposes. They have four of them available for use. Then they have the bigger studio that was used for Wake Up With Al, Noticiero Telemundo when they're in NY and MSNBC sometimes. Another studio is used to provide live continuity for Sprout - their children's channel. http://nbcny.filmmakersdestination.com/stages/global-media-insert-studios/ But your right - that's the desk that came from the old Nightly News studio. The image comes from the great Dennis Degan on Flickr.
MidwestTV 1173
I guess I don't understand why they didn't just use the main studio?
rkolsen 1678
I guess I don't understand why they didn't just use the main studio? Because it costs money to staff a studio - camera operators and stage managers. It's a lot cheaper to do a broadcast from a studio where there's one camera that's robotically operated. Kidding of course but the point stands, it is the flagship broadcast of NBC News.
ProButtonPusher 230
Well, the fact that it took posting a picture of the studio for anyone to notice tells me...Its not a big deal. It's the weekend show, and they have an rear projection screen that can make it look just like they're in the main studio. Saves a little money, viewers don't notice. Seems like a no-lose scenario for NBC.
