KICU TV36 to rebrand as KTVU Plus

Starting Monday, KICU TV36 is rebranding as KTVU Plus. The 7pm newscast is going to a full hour, and a new 60 minute 10am newscast is launching. From what I can tell, the 11pm replay of the Ten O'clock News is staying as is. The 6pm newscast on regular KTVU (KTVU Minus??) is also expanding to a full hour. That means news nonstop from 4am to 11am and then from 4pm to 8pm, as well as the noon and 10pm broadcasts.

Seems like a really puzzling idea.

Edit: Oh, I didn't see this buried in the Out & About thread. Things get really buried around here...

I thought this was a late April Fools' Day joke, but this ain't no joke. It's 100% real and confirmed... KTVU Plus launches Monday on KICU-TV 36.

The biggest programming changes? Mostly in News.

  • KTVU Mornings on 2 expands to another hour to 10:00am on KTVU Plus.
  • KTVU's half-hour 6:00pm newscast on weeknights is being expanded to a full hour on KTVU.
  • KTVU FOX 2 News at 7:00 on TV 36 will be renamed to include the new name and will be expanded to a full hour.
  • The 10:00 O'Clock News on KTVU FOX 2 repeat at 11:00pm will remain.
  • If news is pre-empted on KTVU due to FOX Sports, the news will instead be seen on KTVU Plus.

Already mentioned on the Out and About thread and I did. There's the post above.

Btw, the noon news was expanded like two weeks ago and I think its because to get ready for a news expansion with the KTVU Plus launch.

My question is when did they narrow the 6pm to 30min? Wasn't that long ago. I remember it was already a full hour and transition to 7pm with Keba.

10am would be interesting up here in SF since KTTV has a 10am newscast.

It would be nice if the noon was an hour long.

I don't think the 6pm has ever been a full hour. At least it never was at the end of the Cox days. And according to what's above, the noon was expanded to an hour in just the last few weeks.

But honestly, not counting the 10pm replay, that's going from 8 hours of news on weekdays pre-Fox to now 13 hours!! That's absurd.

Again as I mentioned, the noon is now an hour-long and the 6pm was never an hour, always a 30-minute newscast.

WJW has over 65 1/2 hours of news per week. As a standalone.

The Out and About thread is supposed to be for things too unimportant to warrant their own thread. I think this is a good example of something evolving from "not important" to needing it's own thread.

Could we see Fox doing what they did on MSP and merge both the KTVU and KICU sticks into the 2 PSIP and leave channel 36 to the history books eventually to make the KTVU Plus branding make sense? They each have four subs on each between them so it would be cumbersome now, though three of those channels (LATV, KEMS and CCTV English; that's always been a bewildering one and I'm surprised Fox didn't pay them off to move off after the purchase) Fox is just waiting out the clock to pull them after the Cox-era agreements end.

Otherwise it's good to see they finally did something besides just 'that channel exists, we run it and it airs TMZ and the usual Fox syndie schedule that would be downmarket for KTVU'. It might also be a harbinger that even if Fox would ever move MyNet there if KRON let them go, they aren't changing to "My 36".

Does anybody notice that the "KTVU Plus" logo looks a lot like the callsign/"The News Specialists" element of KSL's current logo?

At least in that version. There are other versions of that logo and the other one has the resemblance of KTVU's current logo.

They probably could do that with out screwing too many people up KTVU 2.1, KICU 2.2 and the rest. Only 11% of the San Francisco market receives their programming over the air - 65.4% get it via Cable/Fios and 24.1% through satellite.

A combined 89.5% ehh? Well then, make KTVU on 2.1, KICU on 2.2 and nobody will notice except for the 11% (with a +0.5% margin of error)

They have already said that "KTVU Plus" will be on 36.1. But, is it anymore confusing than "KQED Plus" (KQEH) on channel 54.1? If Bay Area viewers can figure out the difference between KQED and "KQED Plus" I don't think they will have an issue with KTVU and "KTVU Plus" (KICU) on channel 36. And, yes I am aware that KQED and KQEH simulcast each others signals.

WRT to the programming. Like all the MNT O&Os it's still just "that channel exists." The only real difference is you subtract the 2 hours of MNT programming along with the MNT branding. And, in it's place you add a couple hours of news to fill the holes and create a brand/imaging that ties it to the "main" station in the duopoly. I'm aware that their launch campaign makes it seem like "KTVU Plus" is something special. But, personally I don't see much of a difference between "KTVU Plus" and an MNT O&O.

As an aside I still think this rebrand is sign the MNT programming will be staying on KRON. The affiliation agreement is/was up in Aug./Sept. of this year. So, it seems odd for Fox to hold out this long, not move MNT to their station and choose to re-brand KICU as "KTVU Plus" instead. I suppose they could still have MNT programming even with the "KTVU Plus" branding. But, The timing seems odd...you know what mean.

You're right. The KTVU/KTVU Plus situation shouldn't be any different from the KQED/KQED Plus situation.

KQED 9.1 is also available on KQEH 54.2 and KQEH 54.1 is available on KQED 9.2

If I were FOX, I would keep KICU-TV 36 on air and just have KICU on KTVU 2.2 and KTVU on KICU 36.2.

KICU's primetime syndicated comedy lineup draws better numbers than the MyNetworkTV crap airing on KRON, so I'd say it's very likely the affiliation remains with KRON.

Imagine how worse off KRON would be without MyNetwork?

Not much since KRON still treats themselves as an Independent, even with the 2 hours of MyTV.

When you affiliate with MyTV, their programming goes invisible to your schedule.

I definitely think that KRON should just label themselves as "Independent" and not "MyNetworkTV". They should just send the affiliation to KICU.
