May 2016 sweeps and ratings

I didn't see a sweeps thread but found this.

In NOLA, WVUE actually beat WWL at 10 pm. They are also closing in on them at other time slots, and opening up some ground over WDSU.

WGNO's ratings are laughable...heading towards hash marks? Even the national ABC newscasts are a distant fourth in the market.

WXIA also experienced a 23% decrease from last year, but WGCL took the biggest hit of them all: down 43%!!!!

In addition, Fox 5 also reigned at 5:00; all others of course belonged to WSB.

Primetime? Among 18-49s, I'm going to have to give the advantage to Fox 5 as well, followed by 11Alive and WSB (The Voice had more younger viewers than Dancing With The Stars on Mondays). Overall? I'll say WGCL (even if it did jack squat for their news numbers) and WAGA in a virtual tie, as ABC will finish fourth nationally.

By the time November sweeps roll around, Stephany Fisher will have made herself at home at Fox 5.

KDKA in Pittsburgh still rules the noon, 4, 5, 6 and 11pm newscasts (WPXI is first in the 25-54 demo at 11pm) while WTAE's ratings are down in May sweeps. OUCH!! The Post-Gazette says WTAE dropped significantly in households while also losing ground in the 25-54 demos and one of the possible factors was the firing of anchor Wendy Bell.

http://www.post-gazette.com/ae/tv-radio/2016/05/27/WTAE-s-newscast-ratings-down-in-May-sweeps/stories/201605270096

WTAE’s biggest losses this ratings period — and WTAE’s household numbers declined in every newscast across the board — were at 5 a.m. and noon (31 percent) and the 11 p.m. dropped 30 percent. In the demo, the biggest loss was 43 percent at noon, where WPXI also fell 27 percent. KDKA strengthened its lunchtime lead, gaining 11 percent in households, 25 percent in the demo.

At 11 p.m., WTAE fell 30 percent in households, 35 percent in the demo. It’s brightest numbers were at 4 p.m., where the syndicated “Ellen” replaced the foundering “Dr. Oz.” Here, it jumped 100 and 125 percent in households and the demo, respectively.

Household ratings represent a percentage of the roughly 1.1 million TV households in this market. Demo points represent people ages 25-54; each point represents 10,860 people. Next year, Nielsen is expected to roll out ratings that will include all viewing platforms, including mobile devices and Facebook.

The sweeps ratings drop wasn’t unforeseen. Comparison figures for the month of April in 2015 and 2016 indicated tune-outs, especially in the early morning. WTAE had been first in households at 4:30, 5 and 6 a.m. but slipped to third at 4:30 and 5, second at 6 a.m.

In San Antonio, KSAT (ABC 12) maintained its #1 local news, sweeping every competitive time slot in the latest Nielsen survey.

In Boston...

WCVB won all but one time period in the Households and Persons 2+ demos, WHDH won 4:30pm in both. WCVB and WHDH split most of the wins in the advertiser friendly Adults 25-54 demographic, with WFXT winning late news at 10pm.

You can take a look at all the results here: http://www.newenglandone.com/news/local/boston/may-2016-ratings-results-for-boston.html

I figured WTAE's ratings would drop after this Wendy Bell thing. People down there are mad because of her firing. She is extremely talented and was quite popular in the market. I believe if she was 65 or something and just retired, their ratings wouldn't have dropped. It is because it was an abrupt firing and people are not happy about it. And they haven't replaced her with somebody good yet. But, WPXI is probably quite happy going back to the #2 station they used to be.

Do anybody have the numbers for Los Angeles?
I still think that the sweeps ratings for both Los Angeles and Chicago (and maybe Philly as well) should have their own threads for sweeps ratings in their respective markets.

And about south florida's ratings... Let me guess, WSVN still won and WPLG is second

Oh god, I hope so that WSVN won again.

The only indication I got was that WSVN won in A25-54 from 5-10am and from 10-11:30pm.

Here in Memphis, WREG won the ratings battle, but has seen a significant drop in viewers compared to last year (except at noon and the 4 PM hour) while WHBQ has made gains in just about every time slot.

The breakdown:

- WREG won at Daybreak (4:30 - 7 AM), Noon, 4 PM, 4:30 PM, and 10 PM.

- WMC won at 5 PM and 6 PM, but dropped to third place in the mornings.

- WHBQ won at 9:00 AM and came within a fraction of a point of beating WREG at 6:00 AM as well.

- WATN/WLMT remain dead last and relatively flat in viewership.

Milwaukee, via DuaneDudek.com:

WITI – 5.9, -.2

WISN 3.4, -1.2

WTMJ – 3.2, +.5

WDJT-TV (Channel 58) – 1.2, +.2

-5 p.m.

WISN – 5.9, -.9

WTMJ – 4.5, -.3

WITI – 3.5, -.3

WDJT – 3.1, +.5

-6 p.m.

WDJT – 7.4 (“Jeopardy”), +.9

WISN – 5.8, +.2

WTMJ – 4.5, +.2

WITI – 3.8, -1.0

– 10 p.m.

WITI – 7.2, +.4

WTMJ – 5.8, +.4

WISN – 4.8, -.5

WDJT – 4.3, -.2

Not on Duane's blog, but sent to me by a source in the market: There is a drop of about 1.4 points between WTMJ's 6PM news and The Now Milwaukee at 6:30. That's the biggest drop in shows in those time slots. I guess even their custom Now format isn't enough to keep the viewers interested.

I live here in Atlanta and I must say Im proud of Fox 5. WSB at 11 is boring and stale. Its like Justin & Jovita are robots reading the news.

I find myself watching Fox 5 news edge at 11 more and more, and if Stephany Fisher indeed joins WAGA I see them continuing building and growing in the ratings department.

Now only if they can get a handle on Good Day Atlanta & the noon broadcast. I hate that Guirvir & Lisa are gone.

According to his Instagram account (@marcuswilsonsmith), KTLAs 6pm and 10pm producer Marcus Wilson Smith is reporting that they were number one at 10pm. I don't have any other numbers from the LA market. Please feel free to share if you do!

KCRA took the top spot again over every other station in the Sacramento market with KTXL being the least. KCRA took the top spot at 4PM over KOVR with KXTV sandwitched at 5PM. i could be wrong about that part.

Anyone have any info on Charlotte results? After WBTV's historic wins across the aboard against WSOC in Feb, wondering if they were able to pull it off again.

From what I hear, WSOC is back on top. WSOC retweeted their parent company, Cox Media Group, saying "Kudos to @wsoctv, which delivered seven of the top 10 local programs among women 25-54 in the May sweeps. Congrats! #BeCMG #coxtalent." I know mornings are still close overall. Mark Washburn will have the numbers in his Tuesday column.

I wouldn't say they're closing in on Ch. 4 in other slots. They're still getting killed mornings at noon and at five.

Anyone happen to have the numbers for Birmingham? I am sure WBRC is still on top. I was wondering if Hearst had made any headway with their changes at WVTM, and how WBMA+ was doing under Sinclair.

Also we need to know what WIAT is pulling in pre-Nexstar.
