SoFloTVClassics 1005 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 There you go. Its why WSVN is #1 in Miami and why KRON is last in the Bay Area. Ah! If sunbeam bought KRON would that make a difference? Injecting Tabloid journalism into the San Francisco market. (Not counting KTVU)
SoFloTVClassics 1005 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 There you go. Its why WSVN is #1 in Miami and why KRON is last in the Bay Area. Or better yet, just had a thought, KCAL, in los angeles is the TRUE independent station, and still is, producing a fine tuning news product, before they were bought by CBS. Or KPHO, Then independent was the primetime news king, before cbs came in, A few weeks later KTVK after leaving ABC, became the new independent voice for Arizona, now i don't exactly know how you compare the two stations then and now, but Today they are complete partners. What do these two markets have in common? In the event of a news emergency they can switch regularly scheduled programming on the independent station. Among many things. Just my two cents.
SoFloTVClassics 1005 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 IF....WSVN drops Fox, expect Ed Ansin to run it until the very end of it's deal, much like he did with NBC through 1988....making NBC run WTVJ as a CBS affiliate for over a year... Actually from what I heard he'll have until mid 2019 to end with FOX.

KPHO never had a respected news operation as an independent station. It wasn't until the early-2000's when Meredith started to invest in KPHO's news department.

ColDayNews 438 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 *sighs* Farewell WSVN I hardly knew you. You need to relax. You’re getting a bit too emotionally invested into this deal. With or without Fox, WSVN will remain a market leader in South Florida. Ansin still turns up a profit with WHDH in Boston, and they lost NBC last year. He will find a way to run his stations as independents - efficiently and effectively. It’s just a business transaction, it’s not a life or death matter.

And that’s only because NBC and Cox are being lolcows in their own ways.
CircleSeven 1960 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Its official... it seems like Ansin is thinking that WSVN will go Independent and that it will be a news-heavy station. http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/113547/ansin-confident-in-wsvns-ongoing-success Ansin said: “The transfer from Tribune to Sinclair must occur prior to the resale of WSFL to Fox. Fox has not announced its plan for WSFL, but it has assured us it will in no event terminate its contract with WSVN prior to June 30, 2019. “If WSVN ceases in 2019 or later to be a Fox affiliate, it will continue to be the news leader in South Florida, functioning as a news intensive independent similar to WHDH, its highly successful sister station in Boston.” Wasn't WCCB still had some time left (like a year or two) in the Fox agreement before it was moved to the new O&O WJZY?

Its all about the numbers, namely the Moneyball technique. Here’s the deal: When WSVN lost NBC, Ansin had two choices as an independent. Either spend a lot of money on buying syndicated cartoons and sitcom reruns and not turn a dime, or use the News department to turn a profit. He chose the later. Now the same thing with losing the affiliation with Fox. Again he could sell the station, turn over a margin and have nothing to lose. Or, keep turning profits by adding more hours of news and not spend too much on movie packages and syndicated programming. I won’t be surprised if he decided to do a second run of Wendy Williams.
TVIntheDesert 185 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 What do you mean? That their 9pm. News stinks even by professional standards, or by ratings standards (#1?) Prior to them joining CBS in 1994, KPHO's 9:30pm (later 9pm) newscast never was a ratings winner, and was considered rather unprofessional. Prime time newscasts never caught on here until 1997, when FOX infused life into KSAZ after New World nearly gave it the KRON treatment. KTVK is rather new in the 9pm newscast arena, joining in the game in the late 2000's (prior to that, they only had a 10pm newscast competing with the old hat network affiliates).
mre29 1563 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 A modest success. And that’s only because NBC and Cox are being lolcows in their own ways. What does Cox have to do with this?
ColDayNews 438 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 What does Cox have to do with this? Cox owns WFXT, and they’re failing with them. They tried to make WFXT into KTVU East and it’s not going so well.
dman748 1256 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Wasn't WCCB still had some time left (like a year or two) in the Fox agreement before it was moved to the new O&O WJZY? The WCCB affiliation agreement with Fox only had 2 and a half to 3 months left at the time of Fox's purchase of WJZY so Fox ran WJZY as a CW affiliate for about 2 months
channel2 982 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Also doesn't Fox have that clause where they can just take back the affiliation with six months' notice?
CircleSeven 1960 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Also doesn't Fox have that clause where they can just take back the affiliation with six months' notice? I believe Fox did have that clause, thus asking did WCCB still have some time left in their agreement with Fox.
The Frog 435 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 It’s just a business transaction, it’s not a life or death matter. Unless it involves Sinclair. Then everyone loses their minds.
CircleSeven 1960 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Unless it involves Sinclair. Then everyone loses their minds. Yeah. Say either that or Comcast.....
scrabbleship 429 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Cox owns WFXT, and they’re failing with them. They tried to make WFXT into KTVU East and it’s not going so well. I would think that Fox would have a right of first refusal to re-reacquire WFXT. And less a Sunbeam purchase I think they would exercise that option if given the chance.
Rusty Muck 4405 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 You need to relax. You’re getting a bit too emotionally invested into this deal. He will find a way to run his stations as independents - efficiently and effectively. It’s just a business transaction, it’s not a life or death matter. And it bears without saying that Ed netted hundreds of millions of dollars for WLVI's spectrum last year. He has the money to invest in both WHDH and WSVN's news departments even further. Losing Fox will be less of a devasting move for WSVN than losing NBC was for WHDH. It's simple math: Fox programs the bare minimum in prime-time, nothing else. And WSVN has branded themselves as simply "7" for a solid 25 years, not "Fox 7." Just do what WHDH did - plug in a double-run of Family Feud at 8pm and news at 9pm. That's all. Cox owns WFXT, and they’re failing with them. They tried to make WFXT into KTVU East and it’s not going so well. WHDH now cleans WFXT's clock at 10 and in morning drive. Sure, Fox can set up an O&O with a news department of their own, it doesn't mean they will compete with WSVN for the short-term, or even the long-term.
mre29 1563 Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 WHDH now cleans WFXT's clock at 10... Is that with or without the simulcast on WLVI?
TheRolyPoly 2591 Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Is that with or without the simulcast on WLVI? Its probably with WLVI and they continue to air it there and I don't know why.
Eat News 4745 Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 What do you mean? That their 9pm. News stinks even by professional standards, or by ratings standards (#1?) But have you seen the monthly billing of those newscast? Crap sells.
SoFloTVClassics 1005 Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 But have you seen the monthly billing of those newscast? Crap sells. XD i wasn't aware about that, what else do they have hidden fees, surcharges? XD I mean were talking about good crap.
dman748 1256 Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Its probably with WLVI and they continue to air it there and I don't know why. You'd think that WHDH would've dropped newscasts on WLVI since WHDH isn't affiliated with anybody, apparently the Ansin's haven't gotten that memo yet
