DirtyHarry 727
It's not as crazy as it sounds. Look at all the stations Scripps owns within or near the PAC-12 footprint: 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-283764 Share on other sites

After all, Apple's deal with the MLS allowed for a linear window, which Fox was happy to jump onto. Even Thursday Night Football runs on OTA in markets where the featured teams are subject to blackout rules. With people tightening their wallets over fears of a recession, there's certainly room for at least some major sports to air for free, even if it's more of a gateway drug for a subscription service or RSN (which seems to be the case with most sports on OTA in recent years) than anything else. After all, the RSNs are in freefall, and Pac-12 royally screwed up the handling of their own network, so there's likely to be a mix of income sources as the teams and leagues figure out how to navigate the new realities of TV. 5 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-283783 Share on other sites

Given all the diginets out there who somehow seemed to make money and stay alive with crappy programming, you would think that somebody could make money with Pac-12 sports. Scripps has TV stations in the home markets of each remaining Pac-12 school, plus LA, San Diego and Las Vegas. That's a pretty good start for some kind of an over-the-air network. Home markets are where you will get the most viewership, and then just stick it on a diginet for the rest of the country. Just like the old days when sports teams had to assemble their own networks. Like I said, it's not crazy. Another thought: They own Bounce, the black oriented channel. Pac-12 programming might fit on there as well. 4 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-283786 Share on other sites

They got too greedy and killed the golden goose. What's that Schwarzenegger line in Running Man? "You came here as Sub-Zero, now you are a zero!" That's cable. 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-283814 Share on other sites

I mean they won, so I feel that's still better than the Ion Episode Picker 9000 choosing what episodes of Criminal Minds to run that night (and the problem is trying to get both ESPN and TNT's permission for earlier rounds). If it's fine for the NHL Network to do, why not their broadcaster until games start? 3 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-290116 Share on other sites

The NHL owns the rights to all national game telecasts after they're over, so that shouldn't be a problem. Route66Fan 77
A little bit off topic, but I wonder if, based on the programming & branding changes that have occured at KUPX, KMCC & KASW, Scripps owned independent TV station KMCI-TV, Ch. 38 in Kansas City, MO, will eventually drop it's longtime "38 the Spot" branding & start using some branding like Kansas City 38 or even KC 38? Edited November 21, 2023 by Route66Fan To remove a wrong quote & add some other stuff. Hmm... I don't think so given the fact that Kansas City isn't that known for collage sports 'n stuff. KMCI is gonna be 38 the Spot for a while. 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/18171-ion-media-networks-general-discussion/page/5/#findComment-292948 Share on other sites
