  1. Joy Redmond has joined WMC as their new morning anchor alongside Andrew Douglas. She left WLBT in June and starts at WMC Monday morning. She replaces Felicia Bolton, who left the station in February. WMC's previous morning anchor, Kym Clark, had been filling in for the interim months. With this development, Kym will likely be able to finally return to her new shift of noon and 3:30/4PM (which she only got to anchor for a limited time before having to return to mornings to fill in). On the 3:30 and 4PM shows, she'll be anchoring with Joyce Peterson, who has been holding down those timeslots alongside a daily rotation of either Joe Birch or Kontji Anthony (the station's 5, 6, and 10PM anchors) since March. Joyce herself only joined WMC in February, but is no stranger to Memphis news. Also joining WMC as reporters later this month are Kelly Roberts, formerly of WANE, and Allie Herrera, formerly of WJFW. All of this information comes from various tweets I've been able to find.

  2. WAGA newscast from January 31, 1999 (well it starts there and flows into the beginning of February 1) featuring coverage of the Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl XXXIII loss to the Denver Broncos. Worth noting is this also marked the debut of WAGA's new set. Also on the KTVK promos, nice to finally get to see the video clip of their "Count on Us" image campaign.

  3. Some switches *still* have some unsettled dust (Detroit and Atlanta among them). Some affected markets turned out better than others in that regard. You hear stories later on of stations that _could have_ switched and didn't but were approached about it, like KXAS was by CBS during the mid-1990s big switches. Even though there have been national ratings wins over the years by both CBS and NBC, KXAS was better off not to switch. There is something to be said for stability.

  4. Griffin is buying Scripps... radio cluster in Tulsa, that is. http://www.insideradio.com/free/scripps-sells-tulsa-cluster-to-griffin-communications/article_4aa916d0-7886-11e8-9742-dfbc22bd526d.html

  5. I screen-recorded them off of these NewsActive3 compilations: Also I’m not done with Colorado Springs yet: This aired 2005? 2006? Definitely was their last package using Broadcast News.

  6. This is much worse than the Evansville situation where WTVW had to step in as WAZE's utter incompetence forced the CW to put the affiliation there ASAP. At this point I see only one fate for WBNX; DTV America or CNZ buys it and turns it into the market's place for subchannels of last resort (like WIWN and WTSJ serve in Milwaukee) while burning off the syndication contracts for a year or two (WUAB just grabs a bunch of the better stuff and ditches their bottom feeder shows). They're the only ones who would pay whatever Angley wants for it; the other three would pay much less and likely use it for something more inane like giving the Justice Network full-market coverage.

  7. To clarify, STIRR is a new OTT streaming service that Sinclair has announced it will launch, which would feature local news and various live and on-demand programming, including acquired television series, movies and sports. The BuzzFeed article about this notes that it could be used to have the company compete with Fox News:

  8. The only reason why WUAB gave up The WB was because of their contracts to run both Indians and Cavs games OTA, which reaked havoc on juggling two networks with (at the time) partial schedules. Neither of those exist now, and MyTV is so irrelevant that it can be cleared between 1am-3am and no one would know otherwise. But switching affiliations this coming Monday? The CW must know something about WBNX that we don’t if they made a switch this abrupt.

  9. Jim Rogers saw that coming almost a decade ago and tried to make KSNV as news-heavy as an NBC affiliate could possibly get (not unlike what NBC did with KCNC prior to trading it to CBS).

  12. Funny it took Griffin this long to acquire radio stations, on account it has owned the Radio Oklahoma Network syndicated news service for at least 18 years now. Also, the deal creates strange bedfellows for the stations, since they'll be going from being sister properties of KJRH to being sister properties of one of its chief rivals, KOTV. This is duly noted considering that KFAQ -- which essentially founded KJRH in 1954 -- is involved in the deal.

  13. I really liked the BBC rebrand in 2008, but ever since then, their entire look feels really stale and uninspired. They should have gone for a more radical evolution of that look when they moved to New Broadcasting House in 2013.

  15. As the KDLT deal is being challenged, this KCPM deal has also been challenged by the owners of KRDK (the former full-power of KXJB).

  16. That's a long Speculatron post in the making too. And I see one difficult, but workable, possibility...which is a 180 of old rumors.

  17. It will be interesting to see if Nexstar is hostily acquired much like Media General was hostily acquired by Nexstar.... Given Nexstar's debt load, this could be a bigger disaster in the making....

  19. I think WUAB carries MyNetworkTV from midnight to 2:00 a.m. now. And, yeah, you would think that there would be a two- to three-month leeway for the switch. The fact there was only five days notice that CW programming would be moving to WUAB is a little fishy.

  20. And it's once again a dual affiliate-- it carried both the WB and UPN from 1995-97 until WBNX got the WB. This brings it full circle in a way.

  21. A necessary bump to this thread. WBNX is losing its CW affiliation, and quite soon actually... WUAB will take over as Cleveland's CW affiliate starting July 16 (this coming Monday). The move will result in WUAB dropping its 9:00 p.m. newscast and re-extending its 10:00 p.m. news to a full hour.

  22. A whole slew of reasons depending on many, many factors. Email your local newspaper editor and ask them. Maybe they think there is no local interest, maybe they don't have the people to do so, maybe the ratings services don't make the info available. Ask the source...ask the editors of the newspaper.

  23. Children, children now now now. KOCO has been in third place, but during a decade ago when Oprah was on at 5,6, it did really well. There been sometime where it was very competitive. As for KSTP it has been a revolving door. However it hasn't always been third. WCCO & KSTP use to fight it out. At one time in the 70s KSTP had a 50 share, and yes that was decades ago. However, the cracks at KSTP started in the 80s. Channel 11 was sold from MetroMedia to Gannett and Gannett poured alot of money and NBC was riding high. By the end of 80s into 90s. KSTP news moved into third place in all dayparts. KSTP has always had a great news product, but the faces changed daily due to Frank Magid consultants who were college friends with Stanley Hubbard [even friends you are still giving me bad advice IMO]. If you can go and read the stories about Stanely Hubbard. They're legendary! He had issues with Ron Magers, saying Ron was doing drugs and Stanely sent Ron to a rehab place. Stanely Hubbard had some of the female talent desk locked and chained. Even memebers of the station said Stanely is his own worst enemy. Then there was the Cyndy Brucato debacle. She was the face of the station in the early days, and research wasn't too kind. The consultants said she was too manly on the news, and she was outsted and then appeared on the new NEWS 11 W*USA but doing some light reporting. While Stanely Hubbard was being a terror over in Golden Valley, Gannett had a win-win team at now KARE 11. Paul Magers, picked up where his little brother was the king of the Twin Cities News for 20 years . Also Paul Magers worked at KSTP as a dispatcher when Ron was there. Stanely Hubbard rested on his laurels and the quote he said was "Nobody ever watch Channel 11, so we never took them serious, and thought who would watch their news." You can never rest on your competition and why didn't his best friend Frank Magid didn't tell him that or, maybe he did? The station has always invested in the tools, and throughout the 90s same old story faces come and go. They were able to get Colleen Needles from WCCO, but she left on her own. She has a production company that produce many reality shows that on cable now. Julie Nelson was able to move to from the morning to succeed Colleen to find herself getting a good deal from KARE 11 where she had to sit out for a year on her non compete. Harris Faulkner moved up to evening news and the ratings didn't move and she went over to WCCO now at FOX NEWS. Now with the pie so fragmented there been a few times where KSTP in early evening at #2 or #3. KMSP has step their game up, and despite Gannett/TEGNA woes KARE is not the break out star it once was, but it still solid. It hard to find ratings online but here some old ratings from both markets. http://www.b-roll.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-8449.html https://www.minnpost.com/braublog/2011/03/wcco-news-soars-february-tv-sweeps-while-kare-falls

  28. This is big news because this means that Gray will have a presence in each of Louisiana’s seven TV markets, with the exception of Lafayette). Markets/stations Gray has in Louisiana: Monroe—KNOE Alexandria—KALB Markets/stations Raycom has in Louisiana: New Orleans—WVUE Baton Rouge—WAFB Shreveport—KSLA Lake Charles—KPLC Even though Lafayette is the odd market out, didn’t Gray once manage KLFY & the other Young Broadcasting stations at one point when Young was going through bankruptcy proceedings?? I could be wrong.....
