  1. I don't know if anybody know this, but today marks the 30th anniversary of KCAL 9 News (Prime 9 News).

  3. here's a retrospective narrated by Pat Harvey aired at last night's 8pm news. Are you ready for this though, a real treat: CBS LA uploaded thru YT the last ever signoff of KHJ at 12am Dec 2 1989, transition to KCAL with the much clearer, ever catchy 'california 9' jingle promo. It starts at :38 tho (lord, could they have edited out cleanly at start, please) but enjoy... BTW, here's a report from Dec '89 when KHJ became KCAL after Disney's purchase. And a pre-launch of Prime 9 News in 1990. Apparently, music is based off 615 music's production library entitled 'reaching the dream' which you can search thru Warner Chappelle Prod Music's site. My question tho is what happened between Dec '89 + Mar '90, was there news still at 9 or was it temporary suspended after acquisition was completed?

  4. Philadelphia as a market is very geOgraphicaLly dIverse and vasT--not partIcularly easy to get to the Coverage area they serve--so you have to consider thAt they're in a Location two hours out from the big city as well as the state cApitol to the west, and serving an auDience that may be commuting to and fro each Spot throughout the morning.

  12. As I've been saying for the last month on other platforms outside of here, Sinclair can survive this storm if they want to and have a plan in place for a rebrand on the RSNs and things like that if they can cut out their incompetancy that they currently have (which they can do IF they choose to do so)

  13. Let's also remember that Sinclair doesn't own the RSNs outright. It's basically a consortium with Entertainment Studios, with Entertainment Studios holding something called an "equity stake". To a point Sinclair is probably obligated to charge a minimum to offset the massive debt they have incurred with buying the RSNs. How much those minimums are to offset any loss is not something I'm an expert at, but there most surely is a minimum amount. Also, I'm not familiar with the legal verbiage of the papers that were signed when Sinclair/Entertainment Studios closed on the purchase, but I would imagine that any major decision would require both Sinclair and Entertainment Studios to agree (whether that's the amount charged or branding decisions). Sinclair is probably not able to make as robust of decisions since there is a second party involved. Just a guess there. That's not to say Sinclair is in any kind of financial trouble, but as a business they do have to ask a certain amount to avoid a net loss while also accomplishing their goals with the RSNs.

  14. Sinclair just doesn't have the leverage with MVPDs that Fox did. They don't have a Fox News or even an FX to use as a cudgel. WUCW is not KMSP-WFTC, for instance, and I don't know what kind of cachet the Tennis Channel has.

  15. I feel like Rupert walking away from the RSN business had some to do with this. I think though it's on Sinclair's stubborness, Chris Ripley's arrogance and most of all Sinclair wanting to overcharge for these RSNs (prime example Sinclair is asking distributors $6.50 for Marquee. No that's not a typo that's what Sinclair is asking these distributors in the Chicagoland region to carry Marquee) and at the end of the day I can't blame Comcast for wanting to say no to that and I don't think that lowering the costs of carrying these RSNs is going to help things either for Sinclair because remember, companies like Sinclair are in the business of making money not lose money. Now that I think about it Sinclair is lucky this year is an election year because unless they get their act together they're in deep and I mean DEEP trouble for 2021 and beyond and there could very well be consequences for more than just the RSNs. P.S. I'm surprised no one has even asked this question but how much is Sinclair asking these distributors to pay for these FSNs compared to when Fox owned the RSNs?

  18. The Chris Sloan archive gravy train keeps giving. There's even some rare KHJ from 1988! The 9:00 VO at the time would later do a lot of ABC Sports work in the late 80s and 90s. The 1:00 one was a longtime station staff announcer. Also some Louisville, including a variant of the Copeland/Symphony opens and a longer TVbD open with the "neo Home Country" theme: And there's a cool Easter egg in this KCBS noon open from 1988:

  19. WBNS's current look is only just 3 years old for them that is young. I think they DON'T want to not break the machine in Columbus. WBNS is a beast in the market but not so much lately with WSYX and WCMH gaining on them fast... If Claps and Boops come to Columbus it will be interesting to say the least with Nexstar might want to do some new graphics for WCMH soon... (RUMOR AND SPECULATION from That source I said earlier. but I discount it hard) and WSYX actually putting up a competent news operation in Columbus. WTHR would probably go before WBNS in a lot of things.

  21. Even as a local it makes me wonder how Scranton, of all markets, gets to keep its signature sound, but all the others stations needed to toe the corporate line. Is WNEP that special?

  22. Hell WABC has 3 reporters with 30+ years at the station (Burkett, Dolan, Fleischer), 12 at 20+ (Ritter, Del Giorno, Goldberg, Evans, Bookman, Charlesworth, Torres, Solis, Sager, Yang, Glassberg and Pineda), 13 at 10+ (Einiger, Kenyon, Cho, Baderinwa, Johnson, Novarro (two pieces separated by a stint in CHI, Champion (two stints separated by GMA & TWC), Rosato, Sohn, Yates, Richardson, Smith, Miles). The rest are at 9 or less. WABC doesn't have this attitude or turnover.

  23. That is purely speculative. When the man says he's leaving on this own terms, why can't we take him at his word?

  24. Part 26,626 of "does the theme song matter?" A remix was played as part of warm-ups to the Flyers/Blue Jackets game on Tuesday, 2/18... It was noticed on Twitter and more. Other coverage: https://www.inquirer.com/flyers/flyers-6abc-action-news-theme-song-jim-gardner-move-closer-to-your-world-20200219.html I guess that is one way to get some free coverage outside the sports block...

  27. Sky 5 was severely damaged when the tornado (then at EF2 intensity) hit Tune Airport. When I first heard that the helicopter was parked there while watching a live stream of their 7:00 a.m. newscast Wednesday morning, thought it seemed odd, considering that many news helicopters are housed on their station’s studio grounds, not at general aviation airports like John C. Tune Airport. Considering the airport suffered $93 million in damage and WTVF’s studios escaped damage, putting the helicopter at the WTVF building would have prevented this.
