Ch. 17, Columbia, MO from October, 8, 1982 (Early on in their short stint with NBC, 2 months after flipping from ABC.), courtesy of Michael Pannoni. He has some other recordings from this TV station, but this is the earliest recording of Ch. 17 in Columbia, MO that I could find.

  8. Yep. It originally came from the Sourh Carolina Dem Debate, then went to D.C. for the Evening News and Super Tuesday I coverage. That desk sure is going places.

  11. Lines up with what I found in newspaper clippings. My guess is that the 9/11/89 changes are when the theme debuted. 1989-1990 is a very interesting TV season for KELO because it was very clearly in the middle of a months-long modernization program. In August 1989, KELO was still "The Big News" with the midcentury "kelo•land tv" lettering, which as far as I can tell debuted in 1964: The first clipping I could find with the new KELO logo was in February 1990, though the title of "The Big News" hung around. This version looks a bit off model, too, with a more "organic" brush stroke. By May, the news title was starting to transition out (and also the logo script looks right): By October—apparently having been instituted for the new TV season—it was "KELO-Land News" at all times. In the Rapid City Journal, the title "Big News" last appeared in listings for KPLO on September 8, 1990, with "KELO-Land News" at 10 beginning Monday, September 9.

  14. Regarding the Face the State music, as Weeters said (surprisingly) there is no corporate mandate to use C Clarity. It's just cheaper and easier for the stations to use it, so that's why they all do. I'm guessing they also use it because it is a unique opportunity to try something different in terms if the news music we are used to. WBNS' decision to continue the use of Aerial on Face the State has nothing to do with the fact that Tegna may or may not be sold.

  15. WBNS = Bleh. If it wasn't for the total disaster up north at WKYC, I'd be more devastated. That alone makes the average Tegna-fication tolerable to some extent.

  19. AirchiveSloan is a legend! So is the KNBC jazzy close. Those bumper cuts are legendary as well. Awesome work here! This made my day. The 4pm and 5pm news is also on his site as well. Love how "anchor heavy" LA was at the time. Different teams for all shows....John/Linda 4pm, Colleen (still there at 5pm) and Jess at 5, Keith/Kelly at 6pm and Keith/Kelly at 11pm. The good ol days.

  21. From WVEC's channel, they posted a playlist of videos since last week marked the 40th anniversary of the "Circus Snow" (when 12 to 14 inches of snow landed just as the Ringling Brothers circus arrived in Hampton Roads). Highlights include yet another brief snippet of WVEC right at the end of the intro (with the WNT synth theme) and Judith Baroody, the reporter on the field in the first few clips, doing a piece on the "Blizzard of 1980"...in song WVEC Circus Snow of 1980 Playlist

  22. The San Francisco area stations are tag-teaming their choppers to have constant pooled aerials of the Coronavirus cruise ship docked in the harbor. Unfortunately, the CBSN Bay Area TD wasn't paying close attention and this was up for about 15 seconds.

  23. Springer's commentary made pointed references to Marin's decision to resign because of him being brought on to be a commentator for what was apparently a segment that was to feature rotating guest commentators, even suggesting it as "elitist snobbery [...] hidden in the self-righteous cries of journalistic integrity".

  24. Yep, she left because of the Jerry Springer experiment, if you look closely during the close, you'll see a cutout of a newspaper article about her departure. BTW, those two newscasts came from this site, which has a lot more material related to Carol, including a pre-Chicago newscast at WSM-TV! https://mediaburn.org/video/ch-5-news-5197-5597/

  28. Thanks to Mr. Sloan, Christmas came early for me in terms of late 80s Houston content... Some observations follow as well. A weekend newscast & a midday newscast from KHOU in April 1989 - featuring a young Arthel Neville in the first weekend story. At about 15:11 (and again at 26:00), is the longest I've ever heard of the sports cut of their 1989 package. Most times during the weekday newscasts they'd cut the first five seconds with the "Spirit of Texas" signature off or opt for a version minus the horns. At 39:40 - the "Job Search" segment has a piece of music which I had previously assumed was either library or from CBS' network-to-affiliate reels from the period - the last 5 seconds play under many psa/station IDs from that time from what I've seen on my tapes. A KHOU 6PM Newscast from October 1989, focusing much of the coverage on the San Francisco earthquake. KPRC's 10 PM newscast from April 1989: The music tracks are somewhat out of sequence for the different blocks to my ear. The cut coming out of the first block and the one teasing the sports segment are swapped. The one teasing the last segment generally would be in between. AND SOMEONE FINALLY LET THE CLOSE PLAY AT THE END. I haven't actually heard it that clear in about 30 years and genuinely liked to hear the music as a young kid - what a trip back! KTRK's Live at Five from May 1989, with part of the 6 PM newscast at the end. Both have opens where Ed Brandon has been excised from the sequence due to his stint in rehab, but prior to the hiring of Joe Diaz. It works better on Live at Five than the 6 PM or the 10 PM, which leads us to... a KTRK 10 PM newscast from April 1989. Good quality audio on the close at the end featuring the "Turn To / News Series 2000" version of their theme. This was a Friday, since it was the only time during the week they'd play this version. Couple of good SLIME IN THE ICE MACHINE! moments from Marvin Zindler in his "Rat and Roach Report".

  33. No offense to Stacey-Ann, but I'm not a fan. Her delivery is choppy. Craig definitely has a warmer presence. I hope it was his choice to leave. Jeff Berardelli has been a good substitute. I have seen him sub in on WCBS and WPIX within the last month, but wasn't it his choice to leave the tv news business a while back? The weird thing I find about him is that he doesn't like to refer to the anchor's name when they throw it to him to talk about the weather or when he throws it back to the anchor(s). It might be a small thing, but it makes him less personable. On a related note, I once saw a female meteorologist filling-in on WNYW and thought she did a really great job. Her delivery was good and she seemed very knowledgeable. I can't remember her name, but she had blonde hair. I think she has potential to be a #1 market meteorologist,

  34. Surprised no one mentioned this, but there is now a case of COVID-19 involving a network news personality. ABC News correspondent Kaylee Hartung revealed Wednesday that she is recovering in self-quarantine after contracting the illness while reporting on its effects in Washington State, one of the coronavirus’ early hotspots. Good news is her symptoms—which she originally thought were allergies, given she didn’t experience shortness of breath, dry cough or chest tightness, the primary symptoms associated with the coronavirus—aren’t as severe as they were early on, stating that at its worst, “I was fatigued. I was not looking forward to getting out of bed. I had a headache right between the eyes. I was congested. I had body aches. My lower back was really hurting.” She is worried about having spread the illness to others when she was asymptomatic. Also, the coronavirus is affecting the family of NBC/Telemundo anchor Jose Diaz-Balart, as his brother, U.S. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) was one of two Congressmen to be diagnosed (along with Ben McAdams [D-UT]) in an announcement Wednesday, resulting in other Congressional members who had contact with the two House Reps. to self-quarantine. I don’t know if Jose decided to take time off from his anchoring duties at Telemundo in light of his brother’s diagnosis, but it would seem difficult to report on your own brother having been afflicted with a respiratory disease you have been reporting on for a few weeks.

  35. Sorry folks but this is 2020 and this is New York City. The pandemic and its potential consequences did not suddenly sneak up on us. A news organization of all people could have seen for weeks leading up to this what happened in China, South Korea and Italy. A news organization that has been communicating to the public for weeks the CDC warning that daily life may be interrupted. Did they think they were exempt? This day and age, given everything this city and this country has been through, there is no excuse to not have a back up plan to get your team on the air from the city you broadcast in. I understand needing to miss maybe one or two newscasts to get things together but WCBS does not get a pass on this. This is not about seeing local faces deliver local news (though that should be the goal), this is about being prepared and having a plan that doesn’t involve farming your work out to stations across the country.
