  1. Hidden in plain sight on YouTube for a year... here's a glimpse of a 1975 news open from KVUE

  2. Dan Skeldon has become one of my favorite people on 69 News. He handled over an hour of tornado warnings yesterday with ease and kept calm, yet kind of excited in a way, with clear explanations of what we're seeing on the radar and also what a warning means vs. a watch. Also, and maybe this is a weird way to judge people, but I know he did the weather in South Jersey for so long, but he's learned the geography of the Lehigh Valley really well in naming various locations on maps even when they're not labeled. I think I like him better than I ever did Ed Hanna!

  3. Lori is a class act. One of the best. She is on at 5,6,10 now and is much more comfortable in that element you can tell. The morning honestly is a little bit different and I feel it’s a little more acceptable to interject some more “insight” or “view” there. But on the evening shows where there are no interviews or anything like that I don’t think it’s acceptable.

  4. Certainly. Foreign reporters and journalists are mostly confined to their hotels and sets. Unless previous Olympics they really can’t go out and explore like they been able to in the past due to COVID. Savannah was in Tokyo fir 6 days before the opening ceremony. Seeing as she and Hods have young kids they probably didn’t want to be away for long.

  5. That’s odd though this year’s Today at the Olympics has left much to be desired compared to past year’s (obviously COVID is playing a part in this).

  6. A 1982 CBS News report on the national news explosion of the early '80s:

  7. I think this is equivalent to the situation they have in Denver, where their networks got booted thanks to Scripps, Nexstar and Tegna, so they bought KREG to make sure their networks had a place in the market, while keeping MeTV on KCNC. Hearst (and ViacomCBS) is a big Weigel advocate and outside the ShopLC, Estrella, Cozi and True Crime Network deals sprinkled throughout the chain, isn't going into the subchannel business themselves and are happy to take the DRTV split. Likely this is more about getting H&I, Start and Movies! a constant home in the market, since outside Hearst, the rest of the market is Scripps/Nexstar/Tegna and their networks, and the days of them giving space to Weigel are sadly over (same in Salt Lake with Nexstar/Sinclair/Scripps, thus the purchase of KCSG). MeTV will stay on KCCI, but both Weigel and Hearst don't want to bit-starve stations to get the sister networks on the air, in turn.

  8. I haven’t been able to understand why Nexstar and NewsNation didn’t just launch as an OTT streaming channel. NewsNation truly is a good product - the tv audience just doesn’t exist. Nexstar’s internal catchphrases is “digital first” - yet they did the opposite here. When every other media company is pouring money, people, and effort into streaming vs linear tv - they did the opposite. I would’ve loved to see this product as a hybrid of NN, local news, and the old HLN. Presented in a Peacock type format. You could have your main “channel” that streams NewsNation content and local news. So NN would be built around local news shows. Then have another “channel” that is the headlines channel that is basically the same news every 30 minutes like HLN used to do - updated every two hours. Users could also watch a “channel” that is just a constant weather upstate - think looping SD, 7-day forecast, etc.

  9. I don’t understand the backwards thinking. NN has a TON more users on digital versus on TV. That’s been previously reported. That’s why they push out app alerts like crazy to try to push people to the Cable Channel (yawn). But it’s the same with local news. More people have their apps downloaded. Stop looking at this backwards. Stop promoting a newscast in a newscast to switch to another channel when the end user is just not going to. It’s only checking a checkmark for Perry. If Perry understood audience sizes he would make every local station app push to the new programming on NN and have a live stream embedded in apps just like CBSN or NBC NEWS NOW. Data. Science. Work smarter. Not harder.

  10. I agree to an extent. Commenting how sad a story is or how tragic an event might be is one thing, it’s a whole different thing to add editorial comments to stories dealing with Trump and others like him (despite how accurate his commentary is). His comments last week following a story about an Asian NYPD officer beating criminals already in custody because they hurled racial slurs prompted me to ask. After reading the story Bill adds “as a NYPD officer he knows better and that’s something that he shouldn’t be doing.” It’s like yeah I don’t disagree but I feel like the reporter, the NYPD’s comments and common sense make that very clear without you having to add in your thoughts. Again, I agree with him and we’re likely politically aligned but as nynewslover mentioned above, Bill never comments similarly when involving a left-leaning subject matter and likely wouldn’t be around much longer if he did.

  11. ^ yeah his comments always tend to be politically or socially charged. It’s not even that I disagree with his sentiments, it’s just not really his place to be sharing on the 11 pm news. NONE of the others on channel 7 do it.

  12. He’ll often throw comments in especially after political stories.. police involved stories.. and ALWAYS when it involved/involves Trump.

  13. Couldn’t agree more.. I’ve actually started to turn to other stations because of it. I’m actually really starting to like WCBS at 5.. and I love the format at 6 on FOX5 with Lori Stokes. If FOX5 would get more serious at 5 I think a lot more people would tune in with Steve and Lori.. And let’s be honest if he was commenting “the other way” (we’ll leave it at that) it would not be allowed.

  14. As mentioned, I’m a rather newcomer to NYC but how is Bill Ritter able to get away with his editorial comments during the news? It’s fine to have your say on social media but this man isn’t shy about adding his own commentary to the actual news in obvious ad-libs.
