  3. Dan Abrams I can do without, thank you very much. I don't need that "Us vs. The World" narrative on my screens anymore, especially after applying it to, of all things, a somber moment from three days ago that literally everyone but NewsNation was covering. I do feel sorry for Marni Hughes, though. (This, by the way, is coming from someone who's watched the channel exactly three times ever since NewsNation started out; twice in the first two days of its life, and once three days ago.)

  5. I'm sure over its history, NewsNation is known by most people when it had any WGN related branding. I'm sure most people outside of TV and news enthusiasts have never heard of NewsNation. I'd bet most people I know have never heard of it unless they casually scroll through the guide. I had high hopes for the network, but the constant talent and programming changes compared to other outlets doesn't help either. It seems like maybe it's time to go back to general entertainment if the incoming changes don't move the ratings. I don't think the non-Chicago version of WGN America from 2014-21 was popular either with the exception of maybe a few originals. Had no idea Newsnet had a European correspondent.

  6. Oh, but it will be a full-fledged news network. It's just going to take longer for NewsNation to be so, as they won't be going to an all-news schedule until 2024 at the earliest. https://thedesk.net/2022/09/newsnation-nexstar-24-hour-news-channel-plans/ Speaking of, Matthew Keys posted a tweet yesterday that I feel should be worth paying attention to, since it validates what I said earlier about NewsNation being far behind when it comes to news being broken outside of their news hours:

  7. I'm surprised that the Live PD revival ended up on Reelz instead of NewsNation given that Abrams is on NN.

  9. NewsNation SHOULD HAVE stopped regular programming and AT LEAST SIMULCAST WGN-9 when the announcement broke out... But they didn't. What a joke of a 'network'. Poor Dan Abrams, Marni Hughes, and Leland Vittert. Whenever the time comes to jump ship, do it!

  15. I heard it was going to focus on good news with interviews, so not like a typical newscast. Cindy does seem like a perfect fit for that. I remember watching her and Morry Alter as a kid on the morning news and she has always had such a friendly delivery. I really hope they also give her noon but bring John Elliott along with her, because the two of them work well together but especially if it’s a good news type of newscast, John is good at that, too!

  16. Someone asked if Cuomo's left-wing CNN material is designed to balance out the Shine influence. I believe it's worse and more pathetic than that. Between Cuomo's attempted comeback story and Abrams' constant bitching about the state of (cable) news, they seem to be setting up not an "Us v. Them" political bent, but an "Us v. The World" attitude, where they think the viewer will see them as a sympathetic underdog. I can't even make fun of how lame and sad that is, because they're even sucking at playing the victim.

  17. They should have kept the WGN America name. Don't call yourselves NewsNation if you are not going to be all-news all the time.

  18. I don't see any problem with this. There are casinos in Las Vegas that are open 24/7 and the town is known for its nightlife. Someone who works evenings, gets home well after midnight, and sleeps till early or mid-afternoon might actually want to watch the local news.

  19. Think about this... 4:00-10:00am 1:00-7:30pm 10:00pm-12:00am And that's on top of their longtime lifestyle show MORE from 10:00-11:00am and the new syndicated show Beat The Odds that's coming out of KVVU's studios.

  21. The weekend anchor team was chatting with tonight's sports anchor, and they noted that the just-concluded 10pm newscast is their final one on the KCAL set. A neglected relic of the late 2000s, they're saying it's finally getting replaced.

  22. Also prior to that, Steve Ramsey was news director at KFMB-TV San Diego before coming to WGN-TV in Chicago (which was also a national superstation back then). You meant a client with TVbD (Television by Design).

  23. The 7-9am block was pretty much identical for all the stations as the 6am hour. The thing that's a little shocking to me about the LA ratings is just how low the share is across the board – so much competition I guess, not just from all the other news options, but just everything else that's on the air too. I can't see the Spanish stations, but maybe those take most of the viewers, perhaps? I suppose you could say that KTLA and KABC are the leaders, but neither of them seem to have anything that's a dominant news hour over everyone else like what you see in other markets. KTLA stays a pretty constant .5 rating / 12 share in the demo all morning long, which isn't bad, but not a runaway. Compare that to the Bay Area market, for example, where KTVU averaged a 1.0 rating / 23 share in the 7 and 8am hours. Another insight I saw is that I can see why they'd want to do more with KCAL. The primetime block is actually quite strong. KCAL's 9pm hour last week averaged a .6 rating / 4 share in the demo, which was not only the best rating of any KCAL/KCBS newscast, but also one of the better ratings of any English language newscast in LA. I think trying to do something local on KCAL in the morning while leaving all the network garbage on KCBS is a pretty good idea. That doubles the ad inventory, and it at least gives them a chance at maybe siphoning some viewers away from KTLA and KTTV. What KCBS is currently doing in the morning clearly isn't working.

  25. I can only assume Nexstar execs wanted no part of it. Especially considering that A&E is taking legal action against Reelz for "copying" Live PD, I'm assuming that played a role into Nexstar taking a pass on the show.

  28. 9/11/2002 coverage. looks like all big three networks ran an all day long retrospective on the attacks. NBC Townhall style coverage ABC Barbara Walters takes over coverage from Peter Jennings (9/14/01) at 3:30:05. Cool to see Barabara at the anchor desk in the 2000s.
