I would refer to this topic: Why? Because, it's already been known what stations are rebranded as. All of them are known as CBS Local. It's just up to them if they want to keep the call letters or or numbers on top of it, and that all will be rebranded by Spring. The transition started last year, when the stations refreshed the website with the new names. You'll see the new station names on there. So I don't think it's necessary to guess when we already have the answer right in front of us. Tidbit: CBS Local is not a name I made up, by the way: https://www.cbsnews.com/cbslocal/3 points

"NewsNation Billings".... "NewsNation Elmira".... "NewsNation Escanaba"... "NewsNation Podunk".... I can see their competitors having a field day. "Would you trust news for Escanaba that's coming from CHIGAGO?"2 points

This is my cue to pop in and say I adored the Jodi Appelgate experiment, and I'd stream it almost every night in Philly. Bring back "The Day In PIX"!2 points

Fox’s lowest rated dayparts are when they play pretend news. Old angry white people watch it to be lectured to and indoctrinated, they don’t watch for the news or “news”.2 points

The thing forgotten is that there's still a regular news division, it's just that the radio newscasts and the 24/7 headlines channel on SiriusXM are carrying that 'news' water, along with the short news briefs that now remind me how MTV used to have their 3-minute newscasts at 50 past the hour. So they still have a news operation, but it's been de emphasized so much (along with Fox Business, which just now seems to be FNC2), that only the most knowledgeable about the operation would be able to cite it at all these days. And even the radio news division is now built basically to tee up whatever is about to be talked about on conservative talk radio.2 points

Media Matters doesn't matter to them since they don't go after CNN or MSNBC they are left wing and very bias and I don't believe them and what they say about the news side of Fox News anchors Bill Hemmer & John Roberts they don't inject right wing opinion in the newscast. All cable news has pretend news other than breaking news or a major event like what happened in Ohio train and toxic being released in the air and water. I don't watch primetime opinion shows only one I watched was The O'Reilly Factor his last few years I'd only watch Bill's Talking Point Memos & viewer email as it was same old same old to me, I'd watch Hannity & Colmes from time to time Colmes did keep Sean in check once Sean went solo he had no check Alan was his yin to his yang in my opinion.1 point

Yeah we don't know the whole truth with Betty Nguyen but it seems they pushed her out when they hired Hazel; since she did stay on the 4:30-7am slot for a few weeks. I think Hazel's trying in her new role but don't know why they had high confidence in her to do light/fluff news based on her hard news background... If anything I'd suggest putting Tamsen back on mornings and have Hazel anchor with Kori on nights (then again I just don't care for Tamsen's anchoring style)... but in favor of consistency I suppose its fine the way things are now. By far the strongest pairing I've seen on nights is Kori and reporter Shirley Chan. In terms of the mornings, I think the new set will help to push the team atmosphere a bit more, and I think they have several strong personalities (namely Dan, Craig, Marysol, Chris, Alex, Ben, Oji) and they just have to find the best way to use them. The old WB11 format worked really well with Linda, Lisa, Jill, Larry etc and I think they just need to adapt that to todays era.1 point

Paul Fahri of the WaPo—one of the last true classic media critics around—did a review of NewsNation for the paper last week. He wasn’t impressed. I wonder sometimes if this current iteration of NewsNation is nothing more than a front for the eventual endgame of merging all newsrooms under their control under the “NewsNation” aegis. Just keep running the channel with the Ghosts of Cable News Past—as the quick money grab it is, thanks to retrans fees—as nothing more than an interregnum. By 2025, you’ll see “NewsNation New York”, “NewsNation Chicago”, “NewsNation Los Angeles”, “NewsNation Cleveland”, etc., fully replacing local brands as the cable channel evolves into a cheap program supplier for the local stations.1 point

Yes less than a year is unlikely and they even redirected the @CBSLA youtube to @KCAL. They pulled out the likeness of Jerry Dunphy not Cronkite and Rather for the launch. I think KCAL is a part of LA insider lexicon like “LAX.” It’s also unique as a two syllable brand. Much easier to repeat to others when talking than say KTLA or CBS LA (over twice as many syllables). We’re all human and those factors are first principles.1 point

This only my opinion based on what I saw when she. On PIX - she seemed uncomfortable with the small talk banter with the others - not that she had a problem with the others she work with - Betty is a accomplished journalist and this type of fluff talk was going to hurt her credibility that she earned - nobody at fault, just a bad fit for all involved1 point
-
KCAL is a temporary situation; Wendy explained outright it was a much stronger brand than “CBS 2” ever was and they had to reconcile both brands (which prior regimes never did) before starting the process of streamlining everything. Odds are impressively high that “CBS Los Angeles” will ultimately subsume the KCAL brand in less than a year, and KCAL itself becomes “CBS Los Angeles+”. That’s to confusing for viewers you’re factoring CBS, KCAL, and the streaming app, and network news. KCAL News or KCAL News on CBS Los Angeles would sound better.1 point

Expanding my thoughts on this entire CBS News Local rebrand. Even though this entire thing of rebranding all newscasts from random names, like CBS (Number) News, Eyewitness News, (Call letters) News, to a simple CBS News Local is a good thing to me, I now think it may not be good enough. To me, I now think that if you are doing this entire rebrand with the goal of having a local to national approach, I think the local newscast should be able to match the national newscast. For example, the local news organization brand should remain CBS News Local. But for example in New York in the mornings, the newscast should be called "CBS New York Mornings," just like the national "CBS Mornings," and in the evening, like at 6:00pm, it should be called "CBS New York Evening News," like the CBS Evening News, or to be short "CBS New York Evenings." And not only have it renamed, the local newscasts should also have the same quality production as the national. I'm not saying change the set, or change the way reports are done. But rather try to make it feel more like I'm watching a national newscast in the local segway, instead of being the cheap quality that people have been used to for so many long years. It feels smart to do that as not only you'll help unify your local to national approach even more, but it can also be like a smooth transition and segway to the national newscast as well. I'm sure as alot of people can tell, they're not doing that. I'm probably sure that some are gonna say, so you want it to be the way that BBC News or Global News does it. Well, why not? Give me a bit of international flare into my newscast. Give me something fresh and new to watch in my newscast, and not just the same boring, out of order, un-unified approach. The way that the current roll-out of the new brand is working may be good. But I feel like there could be so much more than just calling the local newscast based on your news organization all the time, and having the same graphics system, the same music, etc.1 point

Well she's back at CBS News, at least in some compacity. Hopefully it is a launchpad to get back into the national spotlight, and maybe use her later on in their "local to national" plan, as they did Jamie Yuccas.1 point

Oh, I agree. But they’ll probably do a show on an OTT like Judge Judy (“Judy Justice”) now does for Freevee.1 point

Doesn't change what I'm saying. None of them are actual "news" channels in the common sense (heck, NewsNation spends more time airing Blue Bloods reruns than they do running actual newscasts). MSNBC is a talk channel with decent amounts of news in the daytime, but they are largely opinion in primetime. CNN is still trying to clean up from the Zucker Era of Disaster and may very well not please anyone in the end. Fox merely is just flat-out blatant about not being a news channel, they don't care. They don't need any advertisers because of lucrative retransmission fees they reap the rewards from on a continuous basis. Contrary to what others have suggested elsewhere in the thread, there's really no redeeming part of that channel whatsoever. It attracts no one but old people for a reason. Cable talk as a whole needs to be thrown into obsolescence where it belongs.1 point
-
“Cable news” is a oxymoron. They all peddle talk and opinion programming to some degree or other. (I count the pointless and vapid talking head interviews and mini-debate segments, but yes, Fox is extremely explicit in showing bias on-air.) They also attract audiences way out of the money demo. The median age range for a Fox and MSNBC viewer is 69. CNN’s median age range is 66. I would put into question the actual relevance of the entire genre. Sure, Fox may be #1, but if their demos are that embarrassing, does it even matter?1 point

It says something about the state of broadcast syndication when first-run shows go away, they're replaced by their repeats.1 point

It's not news that Fox isn't news. And yet it is still stunning to read these texts. (Summary: https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/16/media/fox-news-stars-executives-court-documents/index.html) Fox is NOT an organization simply presenting a conservative spin on the news and fighting to prove their point of view with facts. Instead, they are knowingly LYING to their viewers by feeding them baseless conspiracy theories to make money. Otherwise, these viewers have been conditioned to seek these lies out from other outlets, and Fox can't afford to lose their viewers. They've decided that lies are good for business, but it's awful for a representative democracy and hurts all of us. Tucker wanted to FIRE a reporter who had the nerve to fact check the former guy via tweet. He said this act of truth telling was "measurably hurting the company." (That tweet was soon deleted.) Bret Baier, the guy Fox often points to when trying to claim to be a news organization, asked the president of Fox to rescind the network's correct call of Biden winning Arizona. (Fox was the first to accurately make this call, days before other organizations. They soon FIRED their politics editor and Washington bureau chief, both of whom were involved in this accurate projection.) Fox. Isn't. News.1 point

Also in Texas, only Nexstar and Tegna have reach that comes anywhere near statewide. I agree, if it was the Bannon podcast, that would turn into Comedy Central once the Democrats respond. The other markets that are missing for Nexstar in the state are Beaumont-Port Arthur, Corpus Christi, Victoria and Laredo.1 point

I think those call signs explain the intended programming in Flagstaff and Yuma... And I think at this point with the WPGA-TV swap (which will likely give them WPGA-LD too, as that was hived off in the same "Marquee Broadcasting West" subsidiary for the purposes of the trade), we have to start thinking about what a Georgia Sports and Entertainment Network may look like...1 point
-
If you count bi-state markets, Macon is one of three serving the state where Gray doesn’t have a station; it’s also absent in the spillover markets of Jacksonville (which includes far southeast Georgia) and Chattanooga (which covers the northwestern counties not in the Atlanta market). The only path into Chattanooga is a trade with Sinclair for either WTVC and/or WDSI/WFLI or with Morris for WDEF, or if Sarkes-Tarzian eventually decides to offload WRCB. It could enter Jacksonville by snagging either WTLV/WJXX or WFOX/WJAX, but only if the FCC ever rules on Apollo’s purchase of Tegna and decides that its interests in Tegna and Cox create ownership conflicts meriting spinoffs.1 point
-
Unless Gray plans to snare the ABC or Fox affiliations from WGXA (assuming Sinclair’s contracts with those networks for that station are set to expire in the near future), it seems like an open question what they plan to do with WPGA. (Incidentally, WPGA replaced WGXA as Macon’s ABC affiliate in 1996; its previous owners, Register Communications, dropped the network in 2009, because of objections to the content of some programs and ABC’s request that its affiliates pay $500,000 in annual reverse compensation fees to carry its programming.) As for KNIN, that’s an open question as to whether Marquee continues the SSA with KIVI or turns it into a standalone station with its own studio, staff and news department, like what it did when it bought WSWG from Gray a few years ago. (Boise used to have four news departments until KNIN replaced KTRV as the Fox affiliate in 2011, which resulted in Block, which later sold the station to Ion Media, shutting down KTRV’s newsroom.)1 point

How bad is it over at KCTV, ratings-wise, for them to cycle through so many NDs in over a decade?1 point

It certainly provided a lot of content for NewsNation tonight. Lambert was on Banfield's show after leaving jail. I know a couple of people who worked with him in other markets, and they say he's a good guy, and that he handled the situation about as well as to be expected.1 point

Inaccuracy at its finest... The Weather Channel is listed as an "uber-liberal bastion," according to Newsmax. To quote JaguarGator9, "I'm sorry, what?!" I'm pretty sure last I watched The Weather Channel, they have no politics whatsoever. Actually, they never had politics to start with. It's self-titled for a reason, despite the entertainment programming in primetime and for much of the weekend. I'm actually surprised they put Comedy Central (they call it "Comedy Channel") as a liberal news network, considering how far away from the definition this channel really is, with the only programs that fit their description being "The Daily Show" and "Tooning Out the News." The only thing that would've been the cherry on top is if they somehow watched Scripps News and managed to list that as "liberal..." I don't want to be the type of person to say this, but Newsmax is really being unreasonable here. Carriage disputes like this happen more times than they think. It doesn't help that streaming is helping put cable and satellite on the brink of extinction. It's a matter of survival now. It's ironic Newsmax is angry that DirecTV "cancelled" them, because as pointed out earlier, they're about to "cancel" themselves out of a free streaming option, leaving viewers with less options to watch Newsmax. If their goal is to make viewers angry, mission accomplished, but really?1 point

NextTV asked about the “22 liberal news channels” that Newsmax claims are still funded by DirecTV. They include uber-liberal bastions like NewsNation and The Weather Channel, plenty of general-purpose channels which have one or two news programs, and a few that literally have no news. I can’t with these people. https://www.nexttv.com/news/newsmax-ids-its-list-of-americas-23-liberal-news-networks-topped-by-abc-cbs-nbc-cnn-and-the-weather-channel1 point

Agree with everything you said. There's no hope left if or when Cavuto and Baier leave.1 point

Cavuto has always been solid and tries to stick to what's worked for him for 25 years despite all the other changes at the network. It's clear that he likes his 2 hours at Fox Business better than FNC, but even the leftists here (and for the record, I dislike FNC, CNN, and MSNBC all equally) can respect that Neil has pushed back against former president Trump (We don't work for you) (Cutting away from a Trump speech to correct something said about Obama's record). I also appreciate lives with MS, survived cancer, and comes back from vacation to read emails from people hoping he died on air.1 point

Ben Aaron is a fantastic pickup for them. He’s hysterical, creates great content for TV and social media. One of the smarter pickups they have made. I’m also glad to see Marysol back again!1 point

That’s humor, right? It wasn’t bad enough that WPIX has been a train wreck for years. But Tribune management was well aware of it, and chose not to do a thing about it. Maybe they didn’t want to spend the money. Maybe they didn’t want to make changes (other than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic) because they were shopping the stations. Maybe they didn’t want to upset buddies elsewhere in their bloated and disconnected management structure. Maybe it was all of that and more. There is absolutely nothing about the WPIX newscast that makes it appointment television. No definitive goal or mission, no identification with a demographic or community, no interest in the boroughs or the suburbs and absolutely nothing distinctive or compelling. WPIX is the hospital food of television news. Scripps does have its own problems (such as WMAR). But Scripps might give WPIX a fighting chance to succeed and not just continue to flounder.1 point
-
You're right. History will show WPIX was so much better under Tribune. PIX never looked better than when they were broadcasting their 10PM from this messy corner of the newsroom. That classic late 2010 set and graphics package from when Bill Carey blew up the 10pm news. Who can forget the giant green "iPad graphics", Mr. G's weather closet, and all the great commentary and round table discussions with Lionel and Larry Mendte. Hard-hitting news like this, And of course the seemingly daily "investigation" into the MTA. We're lucky to not have any good videos of the first weeks of this disaster. Even two years later, it was still a giant mess. About the only thing Scripps could possibly do to the station that Tribune didn't already try is to burn the place down for the insurance money, though with all those cheap extension cords in the lighting grid, it sure looks like they might have been trying.1 point

With Nexstar cutting to end of Accused it happened in the fall of 2017 Lions VS Steelers on SNF a close game the Lions needed a stop to get the ball back. I'll say it once, I'll say it again. Once the affiliation contracts are up with the CW with other groups, I think Nexstar is ready to take things in house where they can. Even if it means starting up their own subchannel. It seems a foregone conclusion where there is a spare (or MNTV) Nexstar station where a CBS O&O has the CW.0 points

Wow! I guess the station being #4 in the market and me rarely watching their newscasts prevented this from become viral! Rich was trying to make a miserable joke on-air back in early November that backfired and racially profiled a reporter. And from the comments on the Twitter video link, former co-workers from KCBS weren’t surprised. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2022/11/20/why-would-you-say-that#google_vignette Rich then posted on his FB yesterday that he is stepping away from broadcasting and will become a motivational speaker. Many game show fans were worried about him after he abruptly stopped his Come On Down Podcast.0 points
