  1. The station also just is an icon for the New York area, so just by habit people turn to the channel regardless of the on-air talent. Most of my family who grew up in the New York area tune to the channel because it's almost like a part of the city's DNA so they will be fine but it's still sad though to see such great talent go inexplicably like that. Kinda the same way Bill Evans left. Ken's replacement will have some tough shoes to fill.

  2. This is fair. I was thinking more in the sense that none of the morning departures of recent memory have been as amicable as Diana Williams, Bill Beutel’s and other departures. Granted those were retirements vs defections.

  3. I wouldn’t say Lori left unceremoniously. They knocked out the final 5 1/2 minutes of the morning news to run a highlight reel and have her say goodbye live. Yes, it was something agreed upon with lawyers involved, but it’s pretty significant for someone that exited because of mismanagement and then jumped to a competing show. Steve was unceremonious because he was terminated for cause. Bill’s exit was definitely unceremonious. We’ll see if Ken’s exit is addressed.

  5. I’ll believe THAT when I see it. The story is largely sourced from a staffer present at a meeting in which the McKimmons didn’t even say a word. This feels like spin to hide a massive bloodletting at KUSI and merger at the KSWB building. Nexstar’s purely a bottom line company and there’s no reason for them to maintain two distinct news departments like this. At the same time, they can’t have everyone at KUSI quit in protest over the actual plans.

  6. Aww man, a total downgrade for KSWB when they move. FOX5 is a 2 story building and well kept, however, KUSI’s building is so dated and falling apart. I remember them saying how the roof is leaking in the center of the studio and different parts of the newsroom. I hope Nexstar will invest and will bring the building up to date. KSWB’s building doesn’t have enough space for 2 studios. The way their studio is set up was such a unique design during the WB News at Ten era. (I can’t find the website that shows the design and layout) Basically, it was a hybrid newsroom and corner studio design along with a curved staircase that leads to an upstairs open area with a balcony and a corner office that overlooks downstairs. right below the upstairs corner office used to be the news director’s office which is now the weather center when the relocated the newsroom into the center of the building.

  7. I honestly do not care. I still maintain that a town hall is pointless if you’re packing the room with a friendly crowd and letting them lob softballs at the candidate under scrutiny. If Joe Biden does a town hall in the future and it’s full of committed supporters in the audience, I will say the exact same thing. If the only thing preventing this from being a full on political rally is by having Kaitlan Collins awkwardly fact-check in real time in front of a crowd that isn’t going to listen to fact checking, you might as well just broadcast a live rally.

  8. Respectfully, this comment makes it sound like you've never watched CNN's election coverage before. This has been standard operating procedure for them for all large political events for at least a decade. They have one host (typically Tapper) anchoring a panel of journalists and political analysts, and another host (typically Cooper) anchoring a panel of pundits. One gives objective analysis while the other gives opinion from the left and right.

  9. I guess it's because TWC is becoming more irrelevant in the days of Googling the weather forecast and getting tornado warning alerts on your phone. It's another way for Byron to get profit for his cheap game show that has a whopping *$5,000* bonus round. Are you sure it's not 1973? $5K wasn't chump change in those days - with inflation currently, that would be well over $30K in 2023. Anyone remember Flick and a Forecast?

  11. Except… The thing about WABC is that viewers are loyal and fickle at the same time. They become very attached to and protective of long time anchors. But once they’re gone, viewing habits don’t change. WABC has lost big names over the years including Roz Abrams, Bill Beutel, Bill Evans, Scott Clark and Lori Stokes. They may have left, but the viewers stayed. Perhaps because the other talent are also strong long timers. Perhaps because WABC attracts anchors and reporters that people like watching. Whoever it might be, WABC’s strength will continue. That’s not to say individual anchors aren’t valuable. It’s just that viewers aren’t as committed as one might think.

  14. Thankfully it's coming in "pieces" and not all at once. Steve said while the current set may only be 5 years old, there are some fixes in the works. They are prepping for 4K newscasts and also getting the First Alert Meteorologists a larger weather area because Derek Beasley stated he really wants to see WJZ put their own twist on weather forecasts. There was a chance they were going to move to a new studio in Baltimore City because the building they are in is over 45 years old and in need of some repairs but Kathy Hostetter is already setting that in motion.

  15. Basically the same arrangement in Fresno, with KSEE and KGPE under one roof but maintaining separate brands and competing in the same time slots. However – KSEE/KGPE have one news director over both brands; if the Times article above is to be believed, KUSI's ND Steve Cohen doesn't have plans to go anywhere and I'm sure KSWB's ND Rich Goldner feels the same. Going to be a fascinating integration between the two, especially if they fully merge the newsrooms as was done in Fresno.

  17. The morning slot has seen the most overturn of any timeslots at channel 7, which actually speaks to the station’s strengths. Steve, Lori, Bill and now Ken have each left the morning show a bit unceremoniously.

  20. Definitely a step up with the adaption of the new look, kudos to WJZ. With the new studio upgrade in the works, WJZ will definitely have cleanest on air look in the market. TV Hill is beginning to look a lot more sophisticated and classy.

  24. A game show on The Weather Channel?! How low can you go TWC?!
    1 point
  25. The only other reference on FYSA about TWC was when Jon Lovitz made a joke about Byron buying the network, which made him laugh. I'd love an evening show like TWC had for many year but I don't know if Byron will eventually do that. If FYSA is on three other networks, plus syndication and even via a FAST channel on Local Now. I don't know if Byron saw the success of Gutfeld and CNN running Bill Maher's segments, and decided to run comedy on a mainly serious network. This is a worse fit than any of the times TWC has run movies.

  26. The only connection to weather on the show is host Jon Kelley referring to Byron Allen (who is a regular panelist on the show) in many episodes as "the proud owner of The Weather Channel." But, yeah, there's absolutely no point in why FYSA is even on the late night (11:00-midnight ET) schedule; it fits AMG's other networks (like TheGrio, This TV and Comedy.tv), but it sticks out like a broken leg on The Weather Channel. If any show should fill that hour, it should be either one of its other long-form shows or a forecast program similar to the former Evening Edition to serve as a live counterpart to Fox Weather @ Night (and as a weather-focused counterpart to the live shows airing during that hour on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News). To be fair, this isn't the first questionable programming decision that TWC has made; under both NBCUniversal/Bain/Blackstone and Allen Media ownership, it aired movies with tangential (at best) connections to weather. "Flick and a Forecast" in 2009-10 featured such films as Wind (a film set during the America's Cup boat race), Misery (which takes place during a snowstorm) and The Perfect Storm; not realizing why airing movies on a network about weather didn't fare well the first time, TWC tried this idea again in January and February of this year, with the weekend evening "Winter Movie Fest" block.

  27. Will Jeopardy even be able to keep going during a prolonged strike? Or will Season 40 have to be delayed till its over? I can see 4 weeks of reruns being filled by half-hour repeats of the Jeopardy Masters games, like how they reran the Greatest of All Time shows during the height of COVID. https://deadline.com/2023/05/writers-strike-jeopardy-mayim-bialik-1235359858/

  29. No wonder Regis finally left when he did. Kelly ALWAYS interrupts the co-host. Now, it's her husband of all people. I can't understand how she still has a TV audience. Meanwhile, Judge Milian being snatched by Byron Allen...I was DEFINITELY expecting this to happen. Another dime-a-dozen court show for MNTVs and CWs to air in lieu of another OmegaXL or weight loss infomercial. At least Judge Judy did the right thing and started her own streaming spin-off when she left syndication. Oh, and The Weather Channel is a laughing stock...they air Funny You Should Ask weeknights at 8pm. No, seriously. It's on the freakin' schedule.

  30. This is a town hall for the Republican primary. CNN said the audience was full of Republican or uncommitted/independent voters. It was not meant to be representative of New Hampshire or America as a whole. These large panels are designed to get many different points of view, instead of hearing the same few people making the same few points.

  31. Here's one tidbit that might help explain that: The college the town hall Trump rally was held at? Final exams start tomorrow. Those students didn't need the kind of disruption this event brought.

  32. FOX5/KUSI soon-to-be combo will be like Denver & St.Louis' Nexstar operation. Your right because both stations air newscast at the same time. Both airing morning news, 4,5,6 & 10/11pm news. FOX5 does 1pm and 7pm. Some of those newscast are going to have to change. It's very interesting on how this will play out.

  33. I thought Kaitlan did an excellent job maintaining her composure while fact-checking lies in real time and asking important follow-ups. It was a tough assignment and I feel gross for having watched it, but she probably told some Republicans watching it some facts that they had never before even heard. And yes, she was the White House reporter for The Daily Caller, but if you watch her, you know she has always been tough and fair on the former guy. She was fresh out of college and got a job there. Don't hold it against her. Look at her work. She's excellent. (Yes, I am a fan.)

  34. It debuted last Wednesday (5/3) ast 4 PM. They teased it all week. They look great! The WLEX look was getting dated. These add a nice pop of color and everything animates - they look good and fun to watch. They really bring it up to date. WFMZ is an interesting market in the Lehigh Valley. We're mostly ingored by Philly and Scranton stations. It's extremely well watched simply because there is nothing else. Over the last 5+ years, they've really upped their game and I think it looks better than some stations in larger markets of their own (since we're not really our own market here in the Lehigh Valley).

  35. I mean, the creation of the WB and UPN was in large part driven by independents' fear of being outcompeted not only by network affiliates and the nascent Fox, but by cable networks... And considering how much bigger cable was in 2006 than it was in 1993, when those two networks officially threw down the gauntlet...

  36. Why does MyNetworkTV even still exist? I've never understood why stations brand themselves around a two hour block of reruns. Some stations even show the programming in the middle of the night and not during primetime.

  38. A few thoughts came into my mind... would Nexstar go with the KCAL route and just rebrand everything KUSI News? Nexstar paid $35 million for it and I just don't see it going away, it's a brand that is well known in San Diego; getting KCAL'd would seem to be the most cost-efficient, there wouldn't be a need for separate branding packages and it would reduce redundancies. Both brands already use red, white and blue in their branding. Just use KSWB's good looking studio and graphics and KUSI's iconic theme music together. Merging of the two talents/staff from both stations: let's face it, this is going to happen, but if they mirror this to KTLA's situation in terms of cumulative hours on air: 15+ hours on weekdays, 8+ hours one weekends, then maybe there might be room for everybody? I also wonder if Nexstar will move any of KUSI's syndication offerings over to KSWB so it will mirror Fox O&O stations? KUSI always got many of the programs that would usually air on Fox O&Os: TMZ, Extra, Jennifer Hudson, and Sherry. Also, it's probably a good thing for Nexstar to have an additional hub for Newsnation in San Diego being that it's so close to the border. Nexstar is also getting into local sports, I can see them airing KTLA's Clippers games locally and possibly steal some of that local Padres tv rights from Bally.

  39. PIX, KTLA and WGN to a lesser extent have had free reign on their sets. Will KUSI get the traditional Nexstar set in a corner like big market brother KRON or will they get to do something original. I really like the chill vibe that Fox5SDs set has.
    1 point
  40. I have to assume part of the reason for McKinnon getting out is because of KUSI's physical studio deterioration; with Nexstar in control they can vacate them and have a much more state-of-the-art building with KSWB. I also have to think these talks were happening even before LIV was a factor and Tegna is having second thoughts about the renewal with the decline of syndication being more of a yoke than a complement to 8.1.

  41. So Kelly Clarkson is indeed moving to 30 Rock:

  42. As @Samanthapointed out to me, this outright eliminates KSWB's main competitor, there are no newscasts on KUSI that don't overlap with KSWB. Because of that, the chances KUSI maintains any sort of separate operations is very, very small; in the case of Indianapolis, WTTV and WXIN have to have separate news ops because of the nature of their affiliations. Of note, KFMB-DT2's contract with the CW (reupped in 2021) runs through September 2026. So either Nexstar said what they said under the impression Tegna is planning to opt-out of their CW contracts, or they are forcing the issue for Tegna. Otherwise I cannot understand why Nexstar just turned KFMB-DT2 into a lame-duck CW affiliate for three years.
    1 point
  43. Nexstar appeared to have developed a cozy relationship with KUSI since they took LIV Golf in lieu of KFMB, and now it’s culminated in an outright sale and a future CW affiliation. As for KFMB’s agreement, I think both parties would pursue an early exit from that. I think this is going to go down in other markets as well. Nexstar and Tegna appear to be at odds over CW, stemming from the latter’s refusal to carry LIV.

  44. A lot of Gari's work (especially around that time) borrowed heavily from other Gari works... You can find parts of Eyewitness News in Empire and parts of Making a Difference in News Watch. It's how all the "Package with other signature" packages exist, they just drag 'n dropped the sequences around as needed. It certainly helped with marketing the packages as having "500 cuts!" even if a handful of them were noticeably identical to other packages. Nobody would have noticed or cared, and if you did find something that sounded too similar to something on a different station in town, you moved down the track list one or two tracks, and there was a version that sounded different enough.

  45. don't think the viewers of the Colbert or Fallon are interested in Gutfeld or anything else on FNC

  46. And on '07, Letterman and Ferguson were able to return sooner than the rest because World Wide Pants (Letterman's production company) owned the shows- not the networks and were able to create their own temporary agreement with the writers (Guessing Letterman himself must have funded that?). Not sure if any of the late night shows can pull that now with their respective networks owning production rights?

  47. I forget that Gutfeld even exists. Turned it on for 20 seconds. Tattooed, backwards hat guy, draped in a wrestling belt: "Jill Biden isn't a real doctor," because she can't do surgery, or whatever shit. Annnnnnnd, pass.

  48. It looks like since the beginning of May, TWC has aired reruns of Funny You Should Ask, a show that doesn't have anything to do with Weather. This seems different than other game and reality shows TWC has aired in the past. I laughed when I found that out.

  49. As much as I would love for CNN to “go back to what made them a household name,” I know in my gut that people wouldn’t watch it. American cable news viewers love outrage/conflict programming that’s hyper-focused on US politics. A shift to the center barely scratches the surface of what they need to do for someone like me to watch them. Tonight’s town hall was just another example of conflict television. There are YouTube channels (like TLDR News) that, while flawed and still growing, offer more sober and intelligent coverage of the news than anything I’ve seen on CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. IMO, cable news as a whole deserves to fail miserably, and considering that younger viewers generally don’t watch it, there’s hope that it will. Side note: The fact that the audience was basically full of Trump supporters made this whole thing a near farce. If you ask me, the audience of a town hall should be chocked full of people who are either undecided or solidly against the candidate. If the people aren’t going to scrutinize politicians, then what’s the point of a town hall anyway?
