  1. Hallelujah Although, those big weather icons in the 7-day clash with the rest of the graphics, but I’m not complaining.

  2. For the 4pm newscast, they are using the new weather graphics.

  3. Jeopardy has always been screwed badly timeslot-wise in Central and Mountain Time Zone Markets except for Fox affiliates (i.e. WVUE and WALA) or now KTVT and WDJT. Those of us in the Eastern or Pacific Time Zones are so used to Wheel and Jeopardy being in tandem with each other whether on the same station or separate that it's almost unfathomable to not watch Jeopardy at night over dinner or after it.

  5. Nexstar readies new CW Network affiliates in Pittsburgh, Seattle In the Seattle market, a deal is being finalized to bring CW Network programming to KONG (Channel 16), an independent station owned by TEGNA that operates as a duopoly with NBC affiliate KING-TV (Channel 5) Despite not being a full-time independent station, WATL has a slight edge as the Atlanta area’s next CW Network affiliate, because the deal could cover both it and KONG in Seattle. WPCH is also being considered, because its status as an independent station means it can more-easily accommodate CW Network shows by moving around some syndicated programming. But the channel’s distribution in Canada — which dates back to its ownership by Turner, when it was called WTBS (later TBS Superstation) — proves somewhat problematic for Nexstar, in part because the network is relying on older Canadian series to fill some of its prime-time schedule and has secured live sports programming whose rights are held by other broadcasters in the country.

  6. And like I've said before, no one is going to type "losangeles9.com" or "sacramento31.com" into their browsers, especially on phones. Short but memorable URLs are key., so those will be what get promoted, even if all they do is redirect to (deep breath) www.cbsnews.com/{cityname}.

  7. Only WLS has the full package, and only KABC and KGO are without the weather portion. The other 5, through various hints, are all very close to full rollout. I can't imagine that the east coast trio aren't aiming to have it ready in time for the new 10am shows on the 11th.

  8. Plus KDVR (which last I checked beat KCNC and KMGH) opts to air Jeopardy! and Wheel at 6pm Mountain rather than air a newscast.

  9. Just curious, how do you know that this was a corporate decision? It’s not like they were airing national preseason football last night. To me there’s no reason they couldn’t break into programming on both channels. It happens in Oklahoma, for example, all the time. Just saying.

  10. Back in the analog era, strong affiliates that served adjacent markets had a lot more ability to muscle out local competition. It wasn't until the digital era when stations could sign on a second network via a subchannel or duopoly/SSA/JSA partner. It set a lot more boundaries with the DMAs and markets were able to fill out their choices to satisfy market exclusivity for cable, satellite and streaming services. Also, some of the old analog stations lost a lot of their excess reach having to convert to digital (usually from VHF to UHF) so their signals became more confined with their home market.

  18. Glad to see Matthew Keys out of prison… again… Several station groups have GMs who also serve as regional VPs. I don’t know that this means they are getting rid of that position altogether. Edit: He just updated his bullshit story. Scripps denied the rumors of the layoffs.

  19. It's also why stations should immediately air the local newscast at the end of the network newscast instead of another ad break. More adverts after the end of the network feed allows people to wander away from broadcast programming to cable.

  20. I have a bone to pick about ABC World News Tonight: WHY IS THE BACK HALF SO COMMERCIAL HEAVY????????? There have been several instances where I tune in at 6:47 PM (Eastern), to find the program at a commercial. Sometimes I'll have to wait up to 3 minutes before the news is back. At that point there'll be a short story, then David will say "when we come back..." This is followed by another 3 minutes of commercials. Then 1 minute later ... "WHEN WE COME BACK!" AGAIN!!!!!! I understand that commercials "pay the bills" but why do you have to go BACK to commercial 1 minute after airing 3 minutes of commercials! I swear from 6:47 to 7:00 I watched 10 minutes of commercials to 3 minutes of actual news. Is this time of the evening a "cold" time for TV viewing (or a "hot" time for advertising)?

  23. I was about to post the same thing. I was in my kitchen making dinner at looked at the oven clock at 6:46 and thought, wow! There hasn't been a commercial yet. I actually like the long intro thing. It gives enough details that if I don't want to keep watching, I don't have to, but leaves out some details. Lately this has been the kind of thing I turn on after my local news (on an independent station) ends and I start messing around with dinner in the kitchen. I can still see the screen from there and if I hear something interesting that I missed, I rewind the DVR

  24. Again, 2 minutes of headlines just cut in on story time. When does the insanity end? And you care about 4:3?
    1 point
  25. After rewatching it a few times it seems that they actually do give quite a bit of information in those 2 1/2 minute opens and I think it’s brilliant. You can learn the basis of the top stories in that intro and then stick around for the intricate details throughout the show. Maybe this is ABC’s attempt at providing quick updates in our digitally connected world where programs like WNT, NN and EN have not been able to adapt as well to the changing landscape.

  27. Does David Muir even anchor WNT anymore? I watch KABC’s 6pm show and switch over to NBC Nightly News at 6:30. I always chuckle because the anchors “toss” it to David Muir who seems to rarely be there and WNT at 6:30 is really a rebroadcast, so I’m always surprised they don’t seem to know whose in the anchor chair or not. NNN ends sooner than WNT and I flip it back to KABC to watch Jeopardy. I caught the closing of WNT and Llamas said he’d be back again tomorrow. And I agree with above, WNT’s story preview at the top is waaaaay too long.

  28. It’s not going to stop. They’re the most watched program across all of television, not just news, but across all television. They’re unlikely to change anything about their current formula.

  29. Agreed. And the “breaking news as we come on the air tonight” has got to stop.
    1 point
  30. The headline preview at the beginning of the show is way too long...and so overly dramatic.. And they keep teasing the same upcoming stories too many times, before going to commercial. It's becoming like Inside Edition.

  31. Case in point: Jim Acosta. CNN needs to reassign him to a different role since apparently he's more interested in being a pundit than a journalist. It showed during today's WH briefing. He makes that network look bad.

  32. THAT needs to STOP!! We don't need to pile on while people are sick and/or out of work! We'll see what shape ABC, NBC & Other News are in after this..... I'll be watching!

  34. I surely do miss the Jennings era when they actually had WORLD NEWS for the majority of the newscast. Unfortunately overall news distribution has degraded to viral video analysis, online shopping discount notifications, and too much fluff pieces. At this point, they might as well call it GMA: After Dark.

  38. I'm all for having a thoughtful conversation about it, but there's simply nothing else to talk about. I disagree with you and your statement that the Red Carpet of an entertainment award show, which many people have negative feelings about this year, is an appropriate setting for a nightly newscast. If ABC wanted to broadcast from the LA bureau then fine, but the Red Carpet of the biggest circle jerk in existence - that's just in poor taste. Agree to disagree.

  39. ESPN is supposed to be for sports programming. E! Is supposed to be for entertainment programming. ABC, NBC, and CBS News are supposed to cover all/general news. So you’re example doesn’t really make sense. I don’t see how it’s any different than reporting from the scene of any other major story. I wasn’t looking to get my news from the red carpet. However, I don’t mind it as actual news is what was presented. What’s it matter what the backdrop is as long is the content is good? Isn’t good news (Oscars) still considered news? Or are we only supposed to report from scenes of tragedies? As to why they’ve never done it before, I believe they may have skipped WNT on Oscar Sunday entirely in years past. This year they aired it earlier, at 4:30 ET. If we can’t have a thoughtful and respectful discussion, then maybe it is better you walk away from it.

  40. We’re not going to agree on this so I’m just going to walk away from the discussion. I don’t think it’s appropriate for World News Tonight to broadcast the newscast from the Red Carpet of a major entertainment show. They’ve never done the show from the Red Carpet and ABC has had the Oscars for decades now. It’s like tuning into E! News for election coverage or ESPN for a high speed chase. It’s in poor taste and I’m not looking to get my news of the day from someone standing on the Red Carpet. You are, so fine - we can disagree on that.
    1 point
  41. Because the Oscars really aren’t News... it’s fun. News is things that actually effect people. How does an Oscar personally effect anybody? Does anyone actually go postal over it or does a family not eat over it?
    1 point
  42. Fine. I haven't watched it since a few years ago after David came on board and changed the show's pace and style. I haven't heard great things since then so my bad for not watching myself. It just seemed like a joke to broadcast the show from the Oscars Red Carpet. This is a program about the world's event and the Oscars, especially the red carpet, is not the place for that in my opinion. I also said the show is a former shell of itself (when Peter Jennings averaged 15 million viewers nightly). I agreed with you that NBC shouldn't pack up and move everything to the Olympics so I'm not just bashing ABC, but the Oscars Red Carpet is just not the proper setting for a nightly world news summary.

  43. There are criticisms to be had, for sure, it's just that this one really isn't the one to base your greater argument on. GMA is definitely in worse shape, content-wise, but I just can't agree that World News Tonight and the rest of the network can be generalized as some kind of complete dumpster fire. Heck, I think a debate can be had that WNT has come back to earth a little and is putting out a superior product now than it did in the last years of Diane's and into David's tenure. Oh, and you're right. The program is not bringing in 6-8 million viewers a night. They've averaged 9-10 million, this year, and lead by 200-500 thousand viewers.
    1 point
  44. The show has never broadcast from the red carpet and ABC has had the rights for the Academy since last century. The point being made is that ABC’s nightly newscast is a shell of its former self. One that used to be taken seriously and watched by about 6-8 million more people on average. Is NO ONE allowed to voice criticism and disappointment in the direction of a once globally renowned news network? Or are only the opinions that praise WNT or GMA acceptable?
    1 point
  45. They reported from the scene of a major event. What’s the big deal? If the whole newscast was about the Oscars, then I’d be pissed. But as long as they reported all the news stories of the day, what’s the big deal about the backdrop. I don’t understand why this is a big deal.

  46. How's that any different than Nightly News or Today being hosted from the Olympics host city?
