Comet is essentially syndicated programming. It's as watchable as any other station's lineup. I'll take reruns of The X-Files over a Byron Allen court show. It wouldn't be out of place on an independent station in another era. I'm surprised we don't see more stations fill non-network/news hours with programming from their in-house diginet rather than spending money on dwindling syndicated fare. If Nexstar wants to cut CW's programming costs, why not nuke the syndicated CW+ shows and fill the time with a mix of programming from their diginets?4 points

Dude, it’s just morning TV. There’s not much to analyze about any show on at 10am. It isn’t supposed to be must-see material; it’s something for doctor’s offices and people who work from home to put on in the background.4 points

My exact thought was “oh sh*t they actually wanna do News?” If he can lead CNN in the direction of the BBC in terms of straight forward, hard hitting reporting, no opinion, unmatched global resources and stories viewers won’t find elsewhere, CNN will survive and thrive. I hope it ends up being the best decision they’ve ever made.3 points

Yeah, I still think it's pretty wild and hard to wrap my head around it, that they are considering yet another newscast because just an hour after The View we have Eyewitness News at Noon, yet another hour of news. Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the format in particular, but if they want this show to be successful, they ought to spice it up a bit, be a bit more creative and think outside of the box. We honestly do not need another mundane newscast with anchors sitting on a desk reading from a teleprompter, we have enough of that during the weekdays. Why should I watch the 10 a.m. show if I know I can watch the 12 p.m. in just an hour? How do you pitch that to the viewers to entice them? What are you going to offer for this hour that is different and unique from the rest of the times I can tune in, let alone go online and watch online and on-demand? How do you attract growing millennials who are constantly online all the time to tune in? Maybe there can be a social media or an online component or viewer participation town hall element to the show. If I were a news producer, I would make it an entirely completely different show with an all-new format. Also, the anchors should use their personalities in the production too. Shirleen and Mike have great personalities, so they can also add some spice to the show. I wouldn't even call the 10 a.m. show "Eyewitness News". I would use a different word mark, and title sequence, something like "Good Morning New York", or "AM New York", or I dunno; "What Happening Out There New York?" We also need a show that hones in on the local community efforts, tired of hearing about shootings, violence, crime, and weather. We have enough of these stories during the other shows. Let's hear about this nice restaurant that opened up in the Upper West Side, bringing back the neighborhood eats segment, or this cool new local nonprofit organization that is making a change in the community in Queens, or maybe a new mom-and-pop shop that has opened up out on Long Island. Make an effort to report the good stories that make a positive impact and uplift viewers. No more tragedies, save it for the later broadcasts. It would be nice to see that for a change. Anyway, these are just some ideas, on how they can differentiate this broadcast from the rest. They probably have their ideas set in stone already haha. Also, the Noon show (which should remain a newscast but with entirely different talent) should be entirely new talent as well, Maybe put Liz Cho or perhaps one of the reporters who anchor the ABC7NY bits at 7:30am on to freshen it up a bit more and remove some of the staleness haha. Even though it's working now for them, sometimes a shakeup can be nice. Or an even bolder move, perhaps keep the Noon broadcast not having a permanent anchor assignment, maybe they can keep it open and have different reporters and anchors each week or something. That within itself can keep that show viable too.2 points

I'm wondering how WABC will fare trying to do a lighter broadcast, but then I remember they produce Kelly and Mark, so they should be capable. Sooner or later, local stations are going to have to find more creative ways like the olden days to feel empty timeslots other than news/light news shows. Local talk shows (which already exist in some markets) are a start.2 points

With the new Big Ten deal, Columbus, Ohio's playing field may level out a little more after WSYX/WTTE has had explosive success with their coverage of the Ohio State teams. Now that NBC and CBS have games as well, it's the first time in years where 10TV has aired a Buckeyes football game (even going back to the ESPN broadcasts). And NBC4 can gain some of the action as well should they land a Buckeyes game. Newswise, 10TV and NBC4 are shells of themselves, but this may put a little more revenue and ratings in their pockets on game days....1 point

Adding a 10AM newscast is purely a business decision. Adding another hour of news will cost less than any syndication, which carries heavy fees and ad time splits in major markets. Stations will likely add only a couple of people, who will probably be freelancers. And since there’s no advertising split with syndicators, all the commercial time belongs to the station. That’s a very big deal headed into 2024. Election year campaign spending will be off the charts. Because campaigns love to buy time in news shows, that extra hour of news a day will be a bonanza in political ad sales. There’s no brain surgery or overthinking required in understanding the 10AM show. It’s dollars. Pure and simple.1 point

Agree with everything but the last part; if anything, it’s sensible on Sinclair’s part to just use their existing diginet as filler (at least for the time being) instead of spending a boatload on syndicated fare to essentially program a new station from the ground up (with two days notice, mind you). If anyone is to blame for this, it’s Nexstar for not being able to grab an affiliate until the 11th hour.1 point

No, your original post had valid points. Yes daytime television can be background noise, but there seems to be no effort into making it watchable (while making a profit) these days. Broadcast TV is increasingly becoming a wasteful abyss of programming and it's okay as a viewer to speak on it.1 point

Yeah, I totally get that, just sharing some thoughts and ideas to help an ailing industry haha. I mean most of these shows are probably like that nowadays, most people don't sit down and watch the news anymore they either go online to view or stream from their phones.1 point

An interesting move by DFW’s KTVT to replace the 6pm news with Jeopardy. The news will move to their secondary channel. https://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2023/08/cbs-11-ktvt-dfw-replaces-6pm-newscast.html?m=11 point

New Weather Graphics: The new O&O weather graphics package that the stations are getting are really amazing. They are much cleaner and easier on the eye. The only gripe is that little "AccuWeather" logo they have on top of the main titular banners at times, which looks a bit off but other than that, solid package! I like how they went with a reduction in the size and no more Bold which I think is a solid clean approach. Will be nice to see how the rest of the package looks, I'd imagine it will look similar to WLS's current package. Music Package: Hard to believe that it's almost 25 years since they unveiled the current Eyewitness News Series 4 theme. If you listen closely to the jingle at the titular sequence for the openings, the astute listener will recognize that it actually resembles the Cool Hand Luke opening jingle, which someone had mentioned they wish they would bring back which is likely why they kept it for so long. The current theme, although old now, still sounds pretty modern and works, but, I hope they could've used more cuts though the bumper jingle is nice, but maybe use some cuts out of the package. Especially for the different broadcasts, maybe the morning show can have a softer theme like how KABC does for their morning shows. Someone else had mentioned that it seems like the music is here to stay for all of the O&Os at least for now as a cost-cutting measure. Personally, I've always preferred the newer updated KABC and KGO Eyewitness News theme used on the West Coast over the current one that WABC has been using for nearly 25 years, despite the age though, the melody of the theme sounds for lack of better words, "more authoritative and harder" which is New York. It has that hard news, rough, and gritty vibe, then the softer more chill and mellow SoCal vibe that the KABC theme has. Would be nice if WABC adopted the KGO theme modified with the WABC signature, it always felt very New York. Sam Champion and Talent: With Britney Bell taking over in the mornings and Dani Beckstrom also working in the late mornings, I now begin to wonder if this is the beginning of Sam Champion's departure from TV broadcasting altogether. Total speculation, but perhaps, Sam is slowly stepping back so that the other newer talent can start getting the spotlight more. At this point, at 62, I could see Sam retiring soon. Either way, it will be interesting to see how the producers plan on using him for the 10 am show. has As for the 10 AM show, here are my thoughts: They really have to make this one different from the rest of the broadcasts, because it's a bit crazy to now have a 10 a.m. that is the same mundane format as the 4:30-7:00 a.m. And in just an hour after, (Eyewitness News at Noon) yet another hour of the same mundane format. Not saying the format is bad, but they gotta spice it up a bit. If I were a news producer, I would make it a completely different show. Also the anchors should have a say in the production too. Maybe Shirleen and Mike can add some insight to the show as well. I wouldn't even call it "Eyewitness News" maybe something like Good Morning New York, or AM New York, etc.. something that is unique to New York and the station rather than another mundane newscast.. It shouldn't be a newscast at all. The Noon show should be entirely new talent as well, Maybe put Liz Cho or perhaps one of the reporters who anchor the ABC7NY bits on to freshen it up a bit more and remove some of the staleness haha. Even though it's working now for them, sometimes a shakeup can be nice. I think the other stations did similar approaches, like New York Live on WNBC, It would be interesting to see WABC go for a different format change for the 10 a.m. show; (new theme, new graphics, new set, etc...) perhaps along the lines of a "Good Day New York" format where there are more live interviews on set, less reading of the news, and more of a "happy talk" or discussion show along the lines of Good Day New York for example. Maybe stories that focus more on the community, putting the spotlight on things happening in the communities in and around New York City and its surrounding suburbs and the tri-state area. It would also be cool to see a new section of the studio used for this show. Perhaps the hosts can stand up rather than sit down etc. Either way, they should make this broadcast more like a breakfast lighthearted format than the traditional hard news because honestly, it's just too much hard news already which is boring so that people have a reason to watch in my opinion.1 point

TBH, I was surprised CBSNS didn’t choose to rebrand KSTW as “Northwest 11” (resurrecting the moniker that station used in the early 1990s under Gaylord ownership), instead of “Seattle 11”.1 point

WGN had the same issue until it dumped the CW, so I don't see why this is so panic-inducing, and Gray already sends a different feed to Canada of WPCH which fills in local advertiser content that isn't relevant in Saskatoon with extra runs of the shows they have rights to. I'm sure Gray and Nexstar do have plans for that feed and whatever allowances Bell and Shaw need to keep the feed going (expect LOTS of domestic paid programming blocks on the weekends). The other thing...are we just all allergic to "TV" branding now? "TV-50" is a lot more remembered than "Detroit 50", along with "KSTWashington".1 point
-
Not to mention, sports. Also, WPCH is technically still a superstation in Canada… and considering that The CW is now running Canadian imports like Son of a Critch and Children Ruin Everything, this means those shows will join the network’s past and present American-produced originals in being subjected to simsubbing over WPCH’s signal on cable and satellite providers there (since the aforementioned imports are produced as originals for domestic networks like CTV).1 point
-
I mean, that “SuperStation” died in 2007, so this isn’t much of a change. They’re going from an independent that aired news and reruns to airing 2 hours of the CW per day (along with said news and reruns). Nbd imo, although it really shouldn’t have taken this long to announce this.1 point

Or they’ll be undergoing a musical chairs situation, moving them to other timeslots.1 point

Jeopardy! does have some benefits in the CT/MT zones. Aside from getting it earlier than larger ET/PT markets, several of them are able to double-run it in the 3 or 4 PM hour, and unlike Wheel which is forced to be slotted in prime access with rarely any exception, they never have to worry about getting pre-empted by sporting events, pregame shows, debates, or some random local telethon or special that the station is looking to produce. Pretty much the only afternoon pre-emptions for J! are tennis and golf on NBC, and Black Friday college football on CBS and ABC. Even during the Olympics, J!'s typical 4/4:30 PM CT is in the open window between Olympic broadcasts that's meant for 5:00 newscasts in ET, but in many cases, Wheel is forced to take two weeks off if the affiliate opts to air The Olympic Zone (CBS MV will not allow them to move Wheel up to 4:00 or 4:30 to replace half of a J! double run, which is silly). If it weren't for Wheel still being forced to be slotted in prime access with just one single run (both clauses being leftovers from when it was also a daytime show to avoid competition or confusion between the two versions), I think many CT/MT affiliates would jump at the opportunity to put Jeopardy! at 6:30 and Wheel sometime in the afternoon or even late morning, if they were allowed to do so. At least then, us Wheel fans would have an early opportunity besides the blurry recordings of CJON's airings that show up on YouTube by 4:30 ET.1 point

Will be nice to have Inside Edition not stuck in overnights, but wouldn’t it make more sense to have both Drew episodes on in the daytime instead of Daytime Jeopardy?1 point

The Eyewitness News name will likely never return because of the controversy associated with the name as well as the antics Dunn and Friend pulled at KYW.1 point

Interesting!!! It may also be they did not want to go through all the hassle and steps of preempting network programming and it was easier to just put it on 50. Also, 50 is still the CW and not officially an independent station yet. So the situation with WWJ/WKBD would naturally be different than that of its cross country sister stations. It is what it is.1 point
-
it was corporate who made thar decision, not the ND or the GM. They didn’t want CBS programming preempted so it went to 50. Given 50 is no longer the CW and is now independent, it makes sense. Remember, 62 is a network O&O so it makes sense. The others you mentioned are not network O&O stations. You have to go through a lot of steps to get network programming preempted when you are an O&O. 50 who is also CBS (well owned by CBS) did a great job.1 point

They should give titular credit to all three or at least call the program "This Week" with no named anchor given the rotation arrangement. NBC probably should've just let Tom Brokaw remain the host of Meet the Press (if he was willing) instead of giving it to David Gregory then Chuck.1 point

Very unnecessary it makes the package look like garbage, just use the icons that came with it.1 point

This is weird, because it hasn’t been clarified anywhere else at the moment. This is, however, a good plan for the 2 stations, as KOCB could need the refresh, because it’s only using the brand in station IDs for the station (Trust me, I’ve been on trips and I’ve stopped in the OKC area.). KAUT, on the other hand, airs Storage Wars and Pawn Stars in the morning and early afternoon, etc.1 point
-
My earlier observation carries even more weight now, ‘cause (like with listings for WPNT showing it as the replacement CW outlet in Pittsburgh) listings for both KOCB and KAUT are now showing The CW moving to KAUT and KOCB reverting to an independent (for the first time since it became OKC’s original UPN affiliate in January 1995) on the 1st. If the case, Family Law would be the first CW show to air on KAUT, while KOCB will fill prime time with syndicated shows Monday–Saturday (The Simpsons (double run), Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers weeknights, and Family Feud (double run) and TMZ Weekend Saturdays) and movies on Sundays. KOCB has also changed its Facebook profile pic (and changed the handle from @CWOKC to @KOCBOKC)… Before: After: So, Sinclair will lose some CW affiliations to Nexstar-run stations in markets where they each operate non-Big Four stations under the yet-announced agreement, but be given the affiliation on WPNT to compensate.1 point

So apparently Fox Weather leaves the "hype level" up to the producers of a given show, rather than it being a network-wide decision. As you may know, there's currently a tropical invest located off the Yucatan peninsula that has a high chance of development into a tropical storm/hurricane that could enter the Gulf of Mexico and impact the US mainland around the middle of next week. Today, despite this just being a disturbance in its early stages, and not even a Tropical Depression yet, the 6am-9am ET edition of Fox Weather First turned all of the studio lights red and replaced all Fox Weather First graphics with the network's tropical graphics. Every other show so far today, including the solo-hosted 5am ET hour of Fox Weather First, Weather Command, and America's Weather Center, were all produced using each show's normal graphics, and normal studio lighting colors. Surprised that this type of decision is left up to each show's producers and isn't made at a network-wide level.1 point
-
Just curious, how do you know that this was a corporate decision? It’s not like they were airing national preseason football last night. To me there’s no reason they couldn’t break into programming on both channels. It happens in Oklahoma, for example, all the time. Just saying.1 point

Nexstar readies new CW Network affiliates in Pittsburgh, Seattle In the Seattle market, a deal is being finalized to bring CW Network programming to KONG (Channel 16), an independent station owned by TEGNA that operates as a duopoly with NBC affiliate KING-TV (Channel 5) Despite not being a full-time independent station, WATL has a slight edge as the Atlanta area’s next CW Network affiliate, because the deal could cover both it and KONG in Seattle. WPCH is also being considered, because its status as an independent station means it can more-easily accommodate CW Network shows by moving around some syndicated programming. But the channel’s distribution in Canada — which dates back to its ownership by Turner, when it was called WTBS (later TBS Superstation) — proves somewhat problematic for Nexstar, in part because the network is relying on older Canadian series to fill some of its prime-time schedule and has secured live sports programming whose rights are held by other broadcasters in the country.1 point

Jeopardy has always been screwed badly timeslot-wise in Central and Mountain Time Zone Markets except for Fox affiliates (i.e. WVUE and WALA) or now KTVT and WDJT. Those of us in the Eastern or Pacific Time Zones are so used to Wheel and Jeopardy being in tandem with each other whether on the same station or separate that it's almost unfathomable to not watch Jeopardy at night over dinner or after it.1 point

And like I've said before, no one is going to type "losangeles9.com" or "sacramento31.com" into their browsers, especially on phones. Short but memorable URLs are key., so those will be what get promoted, even if all they do is redirect to (deep breath) www.cbsnews.com/{cityname}.1 point

I really do think nothing at all will change at KCAL; it's just something to ward off a domain haggler from grabbing any city/channel name combo CBS has. "Miami33" just seems like a haggler asking an insane price nobody would pay, and it's doubtful anything will change with WBFS, but they bought Florida33 for the same reason. CBS still does have the WLNYTV.com domain for those curious.1 point

I think that NBC is only using USA to honor legacy contracts that require television coverage. A-10 Basketball, EPL, NASCAR, Indycar are all contracts that USA inherited from NBCSN. The only non NBCSN content on USA is the USFL, and cable coverage of the Golf Majors, and even then NBC moved the majors from Golf Channel. I think going forward, NBC is going to fully focus sports rights with Peacock.1 point
