  1. From industry wide observation it seems anchors often get the opportunity to say goodbye (even if it's for another job), but for longtime reporters, stations just prefer them to disappear unless it's a retirement. IMO if you've been around for a while and you're leaving on good terms, you should at least be able to acknowledge your departure on air --- if you want.

  2. His LinkedIn confirms as well. I question if he was on good terms with management when he left, because he wasn't given an air goodbye like other long timers Tim Fleicher and Dave Evans.

  4. SkyCAL is fine, albeit weird. I think most viewers know that 2/9 has been merged news operation for quite sometime. Plus since recently taking the CBS LA moniker, they identify KCAL newscasts as CBS LA at XX time on KCAL9 so the KCAL branding is semi-intact.

  5. It's a big state so it takes awhile for it to get to Anchorage unlike Honolulu. I like they kept the red for the 2, now in negative space; there's no need to change what works best.

  6. I'm surprised they didn't go with "Alaska News Now" like they have in Hawaii

  7. I like the new KTUU logo though I'm hoping that the '2' will appear in white font instead as negative space. The Alaska News Source logo - objective speaking - looks decent as well. I feel they need to commit to one brand or the other. The Channel 2 brand, in my opinion, would be the stronger of the two. But I'll take these two logos any day over anything involving 'FIRST ALERT'.

  8. Tim Fleischer and Dave Evans retired. That’s a lot different, and deserving of an on air goodbye, compared to leaving for another job.

  9. I kinda wish they'd spell out "Alaska". It's a short name, and I wouldn't have the urge to read it as "ACK! News Source".

  11. Derek was actually the first "chief meteorologist" WJZ ever had. WJZ being WJZ seemed to be more of an ensemble that's been slowly undone as CBS has assimilated them into their group.

  13. So there are some changes to BBC News morning schedule because it will be airing on the domestic feed instead of Breakfast. Good to see Martine Croxall gets a regular slot again, their most popular domestic presenter. Also, last night and this morning, it seems like they removed or reduced the blue light in the newsroom. https://cleanfeed.thetvroom.com/23369/news/uk-bbc-news-channel-to-take-global-feed-at-breakfast/

  14. Good to see her doing well. She sorta disappeared after leaving the station she’s not active on social media.

  15. It's painfully apparent that Scripps overbought, especially with the ION deal. Now they're dumping their weakest stations to any company that wants them, whether they can legally take them or not based on current regulations...

  16. WRTV is a dumpster fire, Hearst, Gray and the like have zero interest in a station like WRTV. WISH is awful too so i suppose it’s a perfect match. Those two newsrooms are likey to be combined with a lot of job cuts. I’ve heard Scripps has a least a few stations that are losing a significant amount of money, it’s looks like Scripps is trying to offload them.

  17. Considering that Gray has WPTA (and soon WFFT), WTHI (soon), WLFI (soon), and WFIE in Indiana, I'm curious as to why Scripps didn't sell WRTV to Gray. That's one of the companies the station badly needed if it wanted to revive itself (maybe Hearst being the other). Unfortunately, this is the second move Scripps has made that will involve a future shutdown of a news department (WFTX being the other since WINK/WXCW will control it).

  19. Dana Tyler spotted in the wild. She cameoed as a reporter on Law & Order SVU this past Thursday. Sue Simmons has done so in the past.

  20. How the heck did Circle City get WRTV instead of Hearst, Graham, Weigel, or even Gray?

  21. Yeah everyone at wrtv needs to get exit plan
    1 point
  22. Oof. I was hoping Circle City was the one being put out of their misery, but WRTV has been a mess for a very long time. Probably even a clean transaction before any of the rules need to be changed.

  23. Oh wow. I'm surprised they're going with The Spot - MTN instead of The Spot - Montana, but I guess that MTN is a powerful brand there.

  24. Nearly 30 years on Central Iowa television, 20 years at WHO 13, and nearly 20 in the top spot at the station. Yet, it'll all come to an end for Erin Kiernan before Thanksgiving. This is the third such well known departure from WHO in recent years. Dan Winters in 2022 and most recently, Jannay Towne, who also spent 20 years at WHO and started in the same year as Erin did, before leaving in August. https://who13.com/on-air/seen-on-tv/erin-kiernan-steps-down-as-who-13-anchor/

  26. This is a little confusing, as Bhargava is majority owner of The Arena Group already. In August 2023, there was an announcement that said he was merging Bridge News (NewsNet/Sports News Highlights) into The Arena Group, and that his IV Media LLC was acquiring ShopHQ. On December 1st of that year, a SEC filing shows he received 10,512,236 shares of The Arena Group. A year later, NewsNet was shut down, presumably by "Arena". Now, two years later, he moves ShopHQ to The Arena Group, and suddenly the NewsNet auction is finally posted. Interestingly, in some of the photos for the auction listings, you can see sticky notes that bear The Arena Group logo on the items.

  27. Which is dumb, since accessing the files wouldn't require any human involvement on the FCC's end.

  28. A perfect time to bring up another of Manoj Bhargava's projects that failed; ShopHQ's IP has been bought by The Arena Group, which you might remember as the Maven Group that tried to run Sports Illustrated but failed, and also has other dead-tree brands such as Parade and Men's Journal. The site's back up online and selling things (and they're back on social media), which may just be a combo of leftover inventory combined with dropshipping.

  29. A year and some months after the shutdown, an auction has popped up for the assets located in the Farmington Hills studio. The auction provides some insight on their plans before the shutdown. The Farmington Hills facility seems to have been outfitted with two complete studios and control rooms (we only really ever saw pictures of one studio), fully equipped with Ross Carbonite Ultras and Ross Xpression. Both had matching desks, but different LED wall configurations. They definitely seemed to think this was going to be a huge operation, if they invested in two complete fully-equipped studio/control rooms.

  30. I think live shows after midnight are pretty useless unless it's a home market team. Having been in a newsroom in an OT situation, everyone from producers to anchors complains about it. The over time pay is taxed. Do viewers really even care if the show is live or pre-taped? There's no production difference except for the live bug on the screen. IMO the insistency on going live after late running sports games are a relic of the old TV age.

  32. Gosh... Nexstar did something right by finally putting live streaming again for their stations. But as soon as they do, now there's a new hurdle. There's now a five-minute free preview, just like some cable TV channels give you a 30-minute free preview. If you want more time, you now have to create an account to watch it in full. Sign in to create your free My Nexstar account featuring exclusive livestreams Like... why? They're making it harder again.

  33. That's a great description for what stations like WWOR look like these days.

  34. Or someone realized that people were now paying attention to Nexstar and the FCC for all the wrong reasons and there's be no way to hide this deal's ugliness except to hold off on putting the paperwork up.

  35. It doesn't and won't matter. Ruddy's protests are not going to change anything in this deal and simply allow him the convenience of being "independent" while in reality, he's no different than the rest of the lot. Yeah it's nice that he's against this merger but he cannot change the outcome of a rigged game.

  36. I don't see how Mission doesn't cleanly merge into Nexstar at this point. The pretense of needing a sidecar company would be gone altogether.

  37. At some point during the process involving this deal, the status of WPIX should be resolved (which may well result in the FCC blessing the arrangement).

  38. The only exceptions are the FOX affiliates in which Gray reupped with FOX for those with current expiration dates on them currently unclear.

  39. Here's a list of the current contracts that Gray holds (including affiliation agreements and their expiration dates) https://publicfiles.fcc.gov/api/manager/download/f3b17ed2-ba72-2238-e3ea-5059313c19e9/95931e93-1049-436d-bd95-f3c7d73029b9.pdf It says WUAB is under agreement until 2027 with the CW. How was Nexstar able to swoop in and grab it back for themselves to put on WBNX?

  40. Well, it won't be Hartford-New Haven -- Gray's already there.

  41. Comprehensive exhibit is up for Gray/Block: https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/dataentry/api/download/attachment/25076f91989faf5b0198aff578690ddf A failing station waiver is requested for WBKI to create the triopoly. I'd argue that it should become available for Tegna --> Nexstar (WHAS) or Hearst (WLKY) first, since neither have duopolies. One way out could be to trade it to Nexstar for a market that creates a problem with the Tegna deal where Gray can take on a second station, or if combined with more pieces, for a new market for Gray (or Nexstar in a hypothetical future deal). If I were the regulators, I would put that condition on the deal.

  42. For those who remember her, Kayla Mamalak (now Altus), formerly a morning reporter at Fox5, is now Mayor Adams' press secretary. She had been deputy but when she came back from maternity leave recently, she was promoted. You can hear her telling reporters that they're not going to discuss other stuff in Friday's press conference. Talk about an unpleasant job to have right now!

  44. CBS News under Bari Weiss eyes a major shakeup of 60 Minutes, and many of these anchors will be axed, potentially including Scott Pelley and Bill Whitaker. Weiss complained that the program "has drifted far to the left" (NY Post Exclusive). https://nypost.com/2025/10/27/media/cbs-news-boss-bari-weiss-eyes-major-shakeup-at-60-minutes-sources/
