  1. Demetrius Ivory has been named to succeed Skilling as chief meteorologist. Effective February 29, he will take over Tom's slots on the 6:00 p.m. hour of the WGN Evening News and the 9:00 and 10:00 newscasts, while ceding his own duties on the WGN Midday News.

  3. Yeah I'm not seeing anything from the new package... except for the aforementioned correct ABC logo

  4. Humor me. What part of this is the new graphics, other than the fact that they're using the correct, current ABC?

  5. WGN plans to commemorate Skilling's retirement with special events throughout February, leading up to his final day at the station: * On Friday (February 2), Tom will report from the Groundhog Day event in Woodstock, Illinois during the 7:00 a.m. hour of the WGN Morning News. * On February 20, Tom will be honored on his 72nd birthday during the WGN Evening News (4:00-7:00 p.m.) with special guests. * On February 22, a live celebration saluting Tom will air during the 9:00 a.m. hour of the WGN Morning News from the Music Box Theatre (near the North Center and Wrigleyville neighborhoods, not far from the WGN-TV studios). The event will be broadcast before a live audience of over 600 fans; free tickets are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis as of 9:00 a.m. Thursday (February 1), and can be reserved at the theater's website. * His final day, February 28, will feature retrospectives and honors by WGN staff, friends and family during the WGN Evening News and the 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts.

  7. All told, a number of satellite viewers are going to be stuck watching the Super Bowl either on OTA or the Nickelodeon broadcast. (Surprised the CBS affiliate body allowed Nick to cut in on their biggest day in 4 years.)

  11. It would be great to see her back, but it seems relatively easy to surmise she is not returning at this point. It's unusual the way this one played out vs other, but whatever the contractual matters and whatever led to the scenario, none of our business.

  12. I personally enjoyed ABC News' then-new-look Washington bureau, and totally miss when they actually had separate bureaus for weeknight and weekend newscasts; now everything is done from the same New York bureau (no originality anymore).

  13. KOVR in Sacramento in 1991, 1996 and 2002. I'm posting this because it was a big time missed opportunity. The station just moved into this new facility about a year prior. A pretty spacious newsroom with adjoining studio. This set-up could've been executed soooo much better... It just looked so haphazardly cobbled together, especially in that first pic from 1991. For a very short time, it had horizontal blinds separating the studio and the newsroom, which made it actually look worse. The last pic from 2002 is probably the best that particular set/newsroom looked. It had various refreshes over the years until CBS took over the station from Sinclair in 2005 and gutted the place. 1991- I'm pretty sure these '91 newscasts were shot with ancient Philips studio cameras that were brought over from the old Arden Way facility. The picture quality was awful. Paul Joncich and Toni Chapell look like they have jaundice. Some RCA TK47s would've been better. 1996 2002

  14. To the latter question- FOX TV stations management have issued a directive to expand news at the O&O stations. I have included a link for Good Nite LA below. Not being negative, just realistic...I wonder how long GNLA will last before it transitions into FOX 11 News at 11. Does anyone remember the ill fated Studio11LA with Laura Diaz and Christine Devine? That is now FOX 11 News at 5pm.

  15. NBC Nightly News (1991) my favorite of their various newsroom world map backgrounds. Love that the background changes based on shot, so studio segments dont look monotonus. Third image: I'm surprised the background had depth. I assumed it was flat and we'd see the newsroom from that angle.

  16. CBS Evening News (late 80s to about 1991). Love the black background, wish the color was used more in news these days.

  19. Paramount likely figured the Nick simulcast would add viewership, boosting total ratings for the Super Bowl, rather than cannibalize the CBS viewership, given their different demographics.

  20. And potentially split up Paramount and CBS yet again should this deal go through... ^^^ That quote is from the Deadline article.

  21. Ugh. I remember as a kid GMA having the worst sets. Too me they were also so....outdated. Like a grannys attic or basement. Or they felt like a old living room full of brown furniture. They were never distinctive, just old and full of old dusty stuff. I dont remember this set in particular, but i remember them always having this "feel". This set looks like a old furniture store full of closeout furniture that hasnt sold. NBC Today always felt fresh, new, urban and modern. Still not a fan of GMA. ABC News sets always felt "off" to me. This includes the graphics. Though I was a fan of Peter Jennings.
