For this debate about how long a brand should last, WJW used the “ei8ht IS NEWS” name for 10 months, then hastily renamed themselves “Fox 8” after the network bought New World. (The newscasts went from “ei8ht IS NEWS” to “Fox 8 Is News” to “Fox 8 News” in less than a month.”)

No one ever accused WJW of indecision. ei8ht IS NEWS lasted through three sweeps periods and a ton of promos incessantly intoning the brand.

Extenuating circumstances as they were going through an ownership change. It definitely sounds like indecision and a rebrand, not brand evolution.

Because it’d be solving a problem that doesn’t exist. Rebranding KCBS as “CBS Los Angeles” makes the station easy to identify and distinguish. KCAL has been a news-heavy indie since Disney signed it on in 1989 and the brand was never de-emphasized under CBS ownership. KCAL’s news department (despite being one and the same as KCBS) has a better reputation and standing as Bill Applegate, quite frankly, dragged KCBS into the mud with a tabloid format that would put WSVN to shame.

My hunch is that you’ll see the KCAL brand get slowly phased out over the next few months, if not a full year. It’s capitalizing on their existing brand equity while associating it with the “CBS Los Angeles” branding.

So their strategy is let’s go all in on the KCAL branding only to change it a short time later? 🤔 Sorry, doesn’t make sense.

So are they using KCAL for all newscasts and not KCBS? I just seen a clip on YouTube of Pat Harvey on KCAL at 6. https://youtu.be/oyyoAGYJC2k

If you listen carefully, even Pat is confused. She Says welcome to KCAL 9 News at 6 on CBS Los Angeles. The 5pm anchor says KCAL News at 5 on CBS Los Angeles and KCAL News at 6 on CBS Los Angeles. The open says KCAL News Los Angeles. So right there you already have 3 different names.

As it seems to me, the division of schedules looked like this:
    4-4:30 am: Kalyna Astrinos.
4:30-6:00 am: Chris Holmstrom and Marci Gonzalez.
6-7 am: Rudabeh Shahbazi and Marci Gonzalez.
7-10 am: Rudabeh Shahbazi and Jamie Yuccas.
    10-11 am: Amy Johnson.
    11-11:30 am: Chris Holmstrom.

    why not just

    Team A: 4:30-7 am

    Team B: 7-9 am

    Team B: 9-11:30 am

Part of scheduling is a predictable team line up.

    Who anchored the noon?

    More equitable would be:

    A: 4am-7am

    B: 7am-10am

    C: 10am-11am, 11am-11:30am, 12Noon-1pm

    KCAL News Mornings

I suggest you look at KCAL's ratings & CBS 2's ratings before making statements.

KCAL is perceived differently in the community despite its duploy. If you lived in Los Angeles, you'd understand.

Enlighten me. What are KCAL’s ratings for news in the morning? That’s right, there is no news. The two stations don’t have a different product - it’s the same people and same product. Why not simulcast to get more eyeballs watching?

  6. Still think it’s silly to run CBS Mornings (east coast feed) on KCBS 4am-6am. Just simulcast the local newscast on both channels from 4am-7am and then exclusively on KCAL from 7am and on. That’s the best way to build ratings for it.

The argument that KCBS is in the basement ratings wise and that’s why we are moving the newscast to KCAL doesn’t quite hold. What’s switching channels going to magically do for ratings?

The most recent discussion is confirming that in many markets, there is already saturation of 10 pm newscasts. In some markets there are also 9 pm news broadcasts and not to mention regional "hyper local" cable news stations like Spectrum News, NY1, News 12, etc.  It begs for alternative programming on NBC affiliates.  How much news can a station put on?  NBC stations already broadcast newscasts at 4, 5, 6 and 11.  How many stories can be repurposed?  If NBC and other networks decide to pull a Fox and give up 10 pm, it begs for program suppliers to come up with some creative alternatives.  I'd be concerned about a talk show considering how Jay Leno flamed out very quickly at 10 years ago.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks that if NBC gives back the 10pm hour to affiliates that the affiliates will continue to carry an 11pm news. Heck, I’m not even convinced they’ll carry a full hour of news at 10pm. I could see them doing news at 10pm and giving affiliates an option of running an abridged version of Top Story with Tom Llamas at 10:30pm, followed by The Tonight Show at 11pm.

  8. With KNBC, WMAQ, and WCAU all losing their top male anchors, at least some if not all to retirement buyouts, I’m surprised Chuck has not taken the opportunity to call it quits. He’s approaching 80, you’d think he’d want to enjoy retirement.

Happy for Brian, although it seems a bit odd to me that 6 & 11 are different anchors now?  I don't know, I don't watch 3 or 10 so I have no clue who anchors any of those newscasts anymore.

I wondered today: if Monica Malpass hadn't left, do you think she and Rick would have gotten 6 & 11?  I tend to think yes.

Either that or Monica would’ve gotten the 11 solo I think, as she was the more frequent fill-in.

I wonder if Sarah will be the primary fill-in at 6pm just as Sharrie is at 11pm.

I was glad to read Brian Taff is replacing Jim Gardner on the 6pm newscast. He’s always been a favorite and will be great. Brian posted the news today on his Facebook page.

I wonder who will replace him at noon? Still think they should have went with Rick & Sharrie at 5,10,11, and Brian & Sarah at 12,4,6.

My bets are on Christie, Alyana, or Alicia getting the noon spot, with Gray as a long shot.

And although Brian is probably my favorite anchor at 6, seems kinda sexist to replace both male solo anchored newscasts with two male solo anchors.

Doreen Gentzler just announced her retirement from WRC-TV after 33 years, effective at the end of November:

Any word on her replacement? I’d like to see Shawn get the 11pm and Pat the 6pm. I wouldn’t mind seeing Eun cross over to evenings either.

I wonder if they’ll ever swap the 6:30pm half hour with NBC NN.

  13. I’ll disagree and say Rob is my preferred candidate. That being said, I’d be ok if Ravi is picked, but I do think one slight change should be made if Ravi is picked: Rob should get the 6pm with Judy, and Ravi should get the 7pm with Cheryl.

Does anyone know when Jim’s last day officially is yet? Also does anyone know if Rick is officially going be the replacement at 6? I keep reading Gray may be a dark horse candidate to replace Jim.

While I love Gray, I think he’s better suited for mornings. I could see Rick, Brian, and Sharrie in the running for the 6pm. I honestly wished they had gone with co-anchors at 6pm & 11pm. Curious to see if whoever gets the 6pm causes a ripple effect on other shows. Seems that they’ve been experimenting weekend evenings too with Walter being joined by a co-anchor various times.
