WTMJ on temporary set and in weather office
MidwestTV replied to nathannah's topic in Sets & Studios
I don't think so? It's not the same person. The woman on screen is brunette with short sleeves. Whoever is at the key is blonde with elbow-length sleeves. Nor are they facing the same direction. -
WBRC now has SEVEN meteorologists!
MidwestTV replied to tyrannical bastard's topic in The Weather Lab
Depending on the market and how much news the station does, even a team of 5 can get stretched thin. Having a sixth can greatly reduce workload and allow for special projects. Yes, they're adding students from Mississippi State as part of their team. Two of them are juniors and one in grad school (which is highly unusual to have a meteorology master working in broadcast). WCBI also does this to a far smaller degree. There's only 3, maybe 4, there. -
Hmm 360° track like BBC isn't really something that's ever been done before in the US, is it? On the surface it would be very unique (especially if it was used for local news - hypothetically). I still miss that Rock Center studio.

Some of you have impossibly high standards lol. It really isn't a bad look at all. I like the cool feeling of it, it's almost like a relief from the heat and humidity of the south. What I will say is that it seems very bottom heavy with lighting. The top third is noticeably darker than the bottom third and the shadows seem a lot more pronounced. Small accent lighting could've helped add depth.

Standard General to acquire Tegna for $8.6 Billion
MidwestTV replied to dman748's topic in General TV
They said the quiet part out loud. Surprised this didn't get posted, but Deb McDermott sent a letter to all of Tegna saying no jobs would be cut. In the article they went on to say Like, that's fine and all and I'm glad to see it, but how does that really benefit Jane and John Doe living in Nowhereville, USA? Great! This mega-media company is ran by minorities and women. How does that help them when it comes to local news?- 433 replies

I love cake, but all these recent departures has made me tired of them. Last goodbye cake we had was barely touched.

Seems like The Tank or stations has been given some creative runway lately, but I don't understand why there need to be special supers just for talent.

His post says Lexington his home and he's coming back again for a second stint. He's probably buying.

That logo is definitely an upgrade.

It's still far better than that worn out look KLKN is stuck with...

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion
MidwestTV replied to ABC 7 Denver's topic in Corporate Chat
Some changes at WHAS. They've killed their morning brand of "Wake Up" and reverted to "Good Morning Kentuckiana" which is what they were for like 30 years before changing in 2019. They've also returned to two anchor newscasts at 4 and 5:30 pm, something else that was abandoned several years ago. The updated open has also been rolled out.- 3687 replies

I grew up on the (I believe?) Giant Octopus early 00s NBC look. They had one or two variations of this look. the WDTN variant

Interesting. Now that you mention it I can see it in the broad, long support elements.

Here are some screenshots from a KSHB newscast in 1998. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdQvSV8H01s I can't be certain, but it looks as if this set was the framework for their new set that debuted sometime in the early 00s, possibly 2003 when they adopted the Action News branding. The frames are very similar.

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion
MidwestTV replied to ABC 7 Denver's topic in Corporate Chat
Of course the employees are the victims. They get no say in the matter and will likely end up having to work harder assuming S/A comes in and slashes as many people as possible. Unless Standard/Apollo gives raises across the board and pours money into each station for resources and development, the only people that really come away from this are the execs.- 3687 replies

Tegna is back on Dish, conveniently after reports of their sale becoming more imminent. https://deadline.com/2022/02/tegna-stock-jumps-on-report-of-new-sale-talks-as-station-group-seals-carriage-deal-with-dish-ending-4-month-blackout-1234926787/

Apollo is unlikely to be much better. I've heard the Cox stations are miserable and ran quite literally as cheap as possible. If Apollo can get rid of you, they will. Tegna employees are the real victims here.- 3687 replies

CBS O&Os Adopting "First Alert Weather" Branding
MidwestTV replied to Georgie56's topic in The Weather Lab
If there's one thing I hate and really wish would die its the over-saturated generic use of "First Alert Weather." Come up with something more original. -
The green is unnecessary. Drop it (from everything) and everything is better.

That open is radically different - I haven't seen that before. Looks good and adds a bit of excitement.
-
This is correct. It's only on full screen gfx. Minor changes, but they're definitely improvements. Bigger elements, more depth, color gradients, and some updated animations. It isn't as flat as it was.
-
It's ironic. They allowed themselves to be canned because they didn't get microchipped the shot, but the way the environment currently is some will have trouble getting jobs elsewhere (TV or not) because...the vaccine is required.
