Some more KMTV promos - the first promo has an unknown theme, the second using “TuesdayA”. Look for CNN anchor Chuck Roberts and former KMBC anchor Bev Chapman in the second promo. Also, did KMTV use “TuesdayA” or “Firepower” for their news opens in 1980? Or did they run concurrently?

I REMEMBER those! They were on back when I had an obsession with John Gray (idk why, I was just a little kid), who around that time replaced Ed Dague at the anchor desk. I don’t really remember Ed that well, but I remember John Gray. When WNYT replaced those opens I recall being very upset that they were ditched. But I began to get used to L.A. Groove - so much so I had a killer earworm of it!

Some bigO plabax from 1980 - including a KMTV Skycam promo with “Theme from ‘Firepower’” and a shot of John McDonald anchoring. Also included is a promo for Dr. Dave Iser, who I believe was Dick Fletcher’s replacement when the latter went to WTSP. Dr. Dave lasted over a year before going to WLS. And here’s a WPLG weekend open from 1986

I’d maybe see Demetria go to Channel 2 alongside Bob Mueller, so the latter could get another longtime anchor...

Yes it has. As we close out 2017, a look back at some people in the broadcasting business we lost: Amanda Davis: Michelle Marsh: Irv Weinstein: Doug Paul: Rich Fisher: Howard Caldwell: Jim Vance: Drew Dimmel: Van Amburg: Wayne Walker: And I’m sure there’s many more, these are just some of them.

According to an online blog, WNYT debuted their glossier look along with L.A. Groove on August 12, 2004. I remember the graphic change well (though I was only 3 years old!!!) and they kept the graphics until April 2012 when they went HD. However, WNYT went through some minor tweaks (including different L3’s, slogan change to “Coverage You Can Trust”, and newer cuts of “L.A. Groove” by 2006).

Wow, gotta love the presence of a young Paul Caiano here. I also remember Bob Kovachick when his hair was gray and not white.

There’s also WNAC 1980, which is the same as WJET 1986: -

Out here in Albany, WNYT’s morning anchor Phil Bayly retired after a 42-year career, 31 years at the station, as well as 15 years anchoring mornings. I grew up watching Phil and even visited him in the newsroom once. He will surely be missed. Here’s his final newscast snippet: https://w3.cdn.anvato.net/player/prod/anvload.html?key=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%3D%3D#amp=1

Discovered composers & publishers of music themes

Because it thinks KDKA’s early 80s theme was We’re 4, and they used the same theme as WROC at the time (specifically on the station ID that is in WROC’s open): There’s a KDKA “Renaissance 2” promo from 1983 that used the same 4-note tune at end of it: -
And you got the booming loud Chapin for the rest... “ACTION NEWS... THE ONE ON 2!!!”
-
Can you upload that tape to YouTube?
-
KERO’s open looks weak compared to its station sisters... Also I love that clean cut of “Groove News” playing during KNSD’s News Close.
-
If that’s the case, then I’m guessing Jcbd did WTLV’s 1994 open too? According to YouTuber Erick Church who commented on thenightbeat’s KOCO open, they debuted that look in the summer of ‘94, but I have a feeling it might’ve been in early ‘95 (maybe February).
-
HOLY CAKE you have 5 Alive and KFOR from 1993!!!! Jim you have been keeping a mean streak of posting some of our white whales in local television news. Keep it up!
-
KTVY actually began Going All Out 4 Oklahoma as early as ‘86
-
Is it just me or does Ed Hopkins sound noticeably off in the WNYT opens? Also those opens look nothing compared to what followed when Channel 13 debuted “Prime News”.
-
Finally, WLWT’s “News Channel 5” intro! That era I believe lasted a year and a half, as by May 1992 they switched back to “News 5”. Also had no idea WTVC held on to the WRGB 1986 Theme that long, and plus WTVG’s open is a treat as well.

Some WQAD gems for you - both were heard on the NMSA but haven’t been uncovered until now. This is the talent bump using the Palmer News Package and the mystery male VO, who was a long-term client of WQAD and Iowa TV in general. https://www.google.com/amp/wqad.com/2015/02/13/gmqc-marks-jim-mertens-20th-anniversary/amp/ This is the open using NS2000 Plus, same VO. Hopefully there’s more - still looking for the one with the 1984 Theme.
-
Do we have any clips of that? Plus it’s weird seeing who keeps popping up in L.A. - no wonder CBS 2’s slogan was once the station of the people!
