Is World News Now obsolete? In the 24/7 news cycle where we have access to information on our cell phones, a live overnight newscast is unnecessary. None of the cable news networks that are "24/7" air live programming between roughly midnight and 4:00 a.m. ET. Why subject people to working the worst shift when they don't have to?
-
You're right! Its their in house produced "Off the Clock". Not a newscast but still KTLA produced. They're producing their own content from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Insane.
-
Yup! WPIX has looked cheap since 2010 when they started doing newscasts from their control room. Ironically, none of the NYC stations are the best looking in their O&O groups despite being flagship stations. WTTG looks way better than WNYW. WRC looks better than WNBC. KCAL looks better than WCBS, and KABC & KGO look better than WABC. Back on topic...

Package as seen on their 2:00 PM newscast — here I was thinking KTLA was alone on that. Nexstar is really inconsistent. They can drop bangers like this on KRON 4 and WXIN, yet do a mixed job on WPIX, and totally suck on News Nation. At least their stations don't all look the same like Sinclair's. Ranking station group aesthetics from best to worst, I'd say: Tegna, Hearst, Graham (they're declining), Nexstar, Gray, Scripps, Sinclair.

Good point. CBS is paying Norah $8 million annually. Brian Williams made $6 million annually on MSNBC. Assuming they match his cable rate, CBS would be saving $2 million dollars on Brian (even more more if they go lower). In all fairness, Maurice and John are probably the cheaper option, and previous big name hires like Katie Couric have not elevated CBS from the perpetual third place. But if even Dan Rather, one of the biggest anchors in news history couldn't elevate CBS from third, maybe that's just their lot. Everyone can't be first place. At this point their goals should be to increase the ratings, and be more competitive.

I always wonder how the two stations navigate being a duopoly with separately branded newscasts on at competing times with what I presume are the same reporters. Are they both airing the same packages and then the reporters front them on both stations at different time slots?
-
Minor graphical observations. I like how NBC and MSNBC are navigating showing off their branding plus the competition's. The MSNBC box is more seamless compared to the redundant double lines that other networks like FOX News are using. Is this how presidential debates will be in future elections? One network controlling the event and simulcasting it to others?

The segment needed to be longer, they were getting into a real conversation and there was only 20 seconds left. When I say CBS Mornings is the smarter of the three morning programs, this is what I mean. These are the substantive conversations that Today used to have and it and GMA now lack. Tony asked good questions, and Coates gave good answers. I think what turned people off from Tony was the way he personalized asking his first question, rather than just lobbying a general question. It also seemed like Tony was advocating for one side in his questioning of why Coates only advocated for one side.

But if Vance says A and Walz says B, the average viewer may just believe whoever they're voting for. The purpose of network fact-checking is for a neutral third party to let the audience know what the truth is. As the old saying goes if one person says it's raining and the other person says it's sunny it's the journalist's job to clarify what's actually happening based on evidence, not simply afford both parties a soundbite. This is why social media companies are in such trouble. You cannot let people use your broadcast platform to spread misinformation and not do anything about it

Not fact-checking during debate leaves the American public at a disservice because it allows candidates to make any claims. I also wish CBS followed the other networks by muting mics to avoid cross-arguing

I'm tempted to call Margaret biased because of her combative interviews, but I'm torn because she hammers both sides. She gave the Republican South Dakota governor just as much toughness as she gave Wes Moore when he was downplaying Biden's debate performance. It's not really advertised that Margaret is as harsh an interrogator as she can be. I was surprised when I took the time to watch the program.
-
I love that Margaret Brennan is co-hosting the VP debate as she's usually a tough interrogator on Face the Nation. I'm surprised CBS isn't asking Maurice and John to do it to build boost their profiles before assuming Evening News. I suppose debate hosting is Norah's "last rights" for lack of a better term.

I can't believe that debacle was 12 years ago already! It was odd that they didn't choose Natalie after Ann. I love Ann, but she is more so suited for serious news. I enjoyed seeing her fill on on Nightly News in her later years. A lot of the light hosting duties, and her chemistry with Matt, didn't flow as easy as Katie and Meredith. Nonetheless she was better than Savannah and did not deserve what happened to her. Moreover, how much of the decline was really Ann's fault? George/Robin/Lara/Josh/Sam were a really strong GMA team at the time. Ann's ouster ended up being in vain because Today is still number #2, and NBC got a ton of bad press.

Not sure if this was posted...WSB 2 has added a 3pm newscast. The last time they did this was ad revenue during election season. Doesn't appear to be any live shots, many look live packages. Wendy Corona & Linda Stouffer are hosting. This puts them head-to-head with WANF.

Al is an institution like Willard Scott. I hope he stays forever. It seems like appears both Savannah and Tom Llamas are being groomed for the role. I'd say Charlie was way more loose than George as evidenced by his Rita Moreno birthday segment. Anyway, back to NBC before the moderators come lol.

Surprisingly for me, Fox 5 Atlanta went all the way down to Valdosta (3.5 hours away) for wall-to-wall coverage well past 2 am. I'll check to see if other stations did the same. I've spent a lot of time in ATL and never got the impression that the two areas were that culturally connected. Regardless the well-resourced O&O station filled the coverage gap in the Tallahassee market, and it built up to what was coming ATL's way.

Yes, it might be redundant if the same names are always in the mix. But, if we're talking about 'big name outside hires', whoever the well known current free agents are currently will constantly be mentioned. As for Anderson, he's a qualified talent, so again, people are gonna keep mentioning him for big national openings. Again, some of the other outrageous suggestions here should cause more of an eye roll.
-
Duuuuude I don't see anything wrong with any of those suggestions. Robin Meade was a light news show host. The third hour is all positivity and the 4th hour is all fluff, I don't think it's a stretch for Meade to host either. You skipped over the posts suggesting Chelsea Clinton, Barbara Bush and Malia Obama but Robin Meade, an actual news anchor, is a stretch??? Furthermore, KLG and Hoda were half drunk on the fourth hour for years, so anything goes... As for Norah and Jeff, both were great morning show hosts and are about to leave their respective positions, so why not? Sure, Shepard and Anderson are wild card names but NBC recruited Meredith Vieira from The View, so they've gone big and random before.
-
Not sure where to put this but KPIX has adopted the CBS News 24/7 virtual map look. I really like it, wish it were used in NYC aswell. I also like the graphic at the beginning of the package that credits the photo journalist.

I had a feeling Laura would be in the mix as her profile has risen lately. The article suggests Savannah could leave too! In that case, Craig and Laura would be solid as co anchors. I'm not sure they have big name recognition outside of regular NBC viewers but that's okay because they can built it. If NBC wants a big outside hire however, I again recommend Anderson Cooper, Norah O'Donnell, Jeff Glor, Shepard Smith?... or even Robin Meade (she would definitely fit on the 3rd/4th hrs). In house: Peter Alexander, Tom Llamas Random...Laura and Craig really resemble Bryant Gumbel and Soledad O'Brien, back to the chat lol.

Kristine and Maurice have always been good, but I wondered why their profiles suddenly rose so much in the last few years. As someone pointed out earlier --- cost cutting measures. CBS is double dipping by having them function as local and national talent. Hopefully their salaries were raised. If CBS wants primarily solo anchored newscasts I advocate for AM Mary/Chris 12pm Cindy 5pm Cindy 6pm Kristine 11pm Kristine/Maurice (to preserve the anchor pairing). It also works because Kristine would be a stable presence if Maurice cannot anchor due to national events. *If they want a co-anchor at 5 and 6 they can go with Dick Brennan (my first choice) or Allen Devlin.

Please go to CBS Brian! Their evening news could use you.

Hopefully they don't adopt the 11Alive lower thirds. Those are atrocious and distracting. The current KUSA L3s are nice and simple- 3706 replies

The problem is Scripps News was a droplet in a swimming pool. So many other outlets already provide 24/7 national news not to mention the nationalization of local newscasts. How much of the same can exist before the bubble bursts?
