I know nobody has noticed this but more and more Nexstar stations are streaming live online and dropping the company's horrendous two-hour delay policy... KELO, WCMH, WKRN, WFLA, WXIN, and WDAF are a few examples.

Nice, my FOX affiliate. (WDAF-TV)

WOOD TV does the bite size news they have a live desk news & interviews that is what the promos have been saying for the past couple of years. Maybe that is how they got past the 2-hour rule before the newscast could be streamed but I don't know that for sure. Does other Nexstar stations have a live desk for online and bite size news for weather, sports and interviews with someone local or famous celebrity etc.?

Several Nexstar stations do a lot of digital efforts (i.e. WKRGNow) which amount to a totally separate set of newscasts at different times of the day when their main ones are not broadcasting.

It's a lot of effort that's stuck in an archaic method of delivery (web streaming) and can be leveraged through OTT platforms.

And many of the stations Nexstar took over (especially Media General and Tribune) had robust efforts that were squandered in favor of broadcast-only methods and trying to squeeze every penny out of the pay-tv companies.  Media General had a large presence on NewsOn before Nexstar took them over.  Many Tribune stations even had their own streaming Roku and FireTV apps.

The fall of WFRV's web efforts from their CBS days, including a livestream page that doesn't even load and is under the 'Digital Center' category like it's 1999 and CueCat is the future is a case study on how badly they've done (the page points to another page called Video Center in the same vertical, itself literally a clone of their YouTube page, just with the janky Nexstar player instead).

I completely forget they exist because Nexstar's apps and websites are just so bad as glorified web wrappers, and even their Twitter presence is terrible and was always underdeveloped (they had one of their news anchors running the feed under Four Points management!). The station brands as Local 5, yet their app is named WFRVNews and the website is WeAreGreenBay.com; it's no wonder it would be a last place operation if not for WGBA (which at least is NBC26 everywhere, and WBAY and WLUK have the same branding consistency).

And they acquired Frankly in the MG deal, a known good news site developer; how did they manage to screw it all up so badly?

I just checked WPRI and it looks like they're doing their streams live again too but I also noticed this... this could be the first of many popping up from Nexstar (FINALLY).

WPRI, btw, is the first Southern New England television station to launch their own smart TV app. I'll be downloading this on my Roku, ASAP.

Color me shocked.  2015 has finally rolled around for Nexstar.

I just downloaded the Fox 8 CLE+ app. Hell has finally froze over.

Looks like it's the major markets that are receiving Roku apps.  And yes, they do have live streaming.

(And why 2015?  Because it seems that Nexstar is a decade behind the times with everything.  I bought my first Roku 10 years ago!)

On the surface level, I understand Nexstar's reasoning for the streaming delay: forcing people to watch the news live on TV. But that only works if every station group does it. If I can't livestream my local Nexstar affiliate what stops me from turning to my local Tegna or Gray station stream?

Then again...if no TV group streamed wouldn't audiences just turn to digital video outlets?  My own food for thought.

I just noticed this... for WJW's 75th anniversary last year, they have a shop. The coolest is a T-shirt featuring all past WJW general and news-related logos and that's probably THE item to get.

I think Nexstar is finally reversing the trend. WFLA now has a Roku app and they stream live. KDVR has one as well and that's where you'll find KWGN's content as well. Nexstar has finally caught up to others but they still have ways to go.

In addition to stations already mentioned, WAVY, WKRN, KXAN, WXIN, WGHP, KELOLand, WDAF, and WSPA now stream live and have Roku/Fire TV apps as well. Its about damn time Nexstar got out of the livestream gutter and caught up to the 21st century.

DFW is on a roll in terms of having live free OTA sports because now Nexstar will carry 15 Rangers games this upcoming season. It will be on KDAF plus other stations throughout the state and the South.

Here's something that I missed from last month... KOIN and KRCW are carrying 20 Oregon State Beavers baseball home games this season. One is airing now as we speak on KOIN but the majority of the games will be on KRCW.

KELOLand is reairing Captain 11 once again. The longtime local children's show from 1955-1996 is getting a Sunday marathon on KELO Xtra.

And speaking of KELOLand, they're following sister WGN's footsteps... in opening their own merch shop.

Where's your source, which stations are set to lose their choppers?

For my source: I’ll say my lack of citing a “source” should speak for who my source is.

As for which specific stations are losing them… Again, I’ll just say it will be most of them. You’ll be able to count on one hand how many stations still have a chopper after this is over… and you’ll have fingers leftover too.

Let’s let my vagueness over sharing anymore specific details speak back to my answer to the first question.

Feels like there aren't a lot of legacy Nexstar stations that have their own choppers to begin with. Most of the ones that do have them came from Tribune or Media General purchases. Of those: KTLA for car chases and fires and KFOR for tornadoes stand out as the two biggest examples of their stations in markets that have helicopter coverage as a viewer expectation and would put a station at a significant competitive disadvantage without one.

The other question is, does this include ending their participation in multi-station helicopter shares like Denver?

You are 100% correct, and corporate has been made aware of that, but will not be budging.

I think they’re more concerned about possible liabilities than any competitive advantage or profit.

They understand they will effectively be losing money on this, but seem okay with that

WJW has had theirs (SkyFox) for well over 30 years, but it is a leased one (Helicopters, Inc.)

I think at one point they stopped using it but resumed using it shortly after.  Around 2008-09 after Fox unloaded them to LocalTV.
