Bsean 149
This is the same as the threads created for other companies. I'll start it off by saying that KSWB has announced they will launch Fox 5 News at 4 starting on Sept 8. That means KSWB will have 3 solid hours of evening news. KNSD is the only other station in the market with news at 4. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13828-kswb-launching-4pm-newscast/ Share on other sites
TheRob 937
I'm pretty sure KSWB has eyes on a 1:00 p.m. (yes, 1:00) newscast as well, just like KTLA. KNSD and Judge Judy on CBS 8 will still crush them. I'm pretty sure KSWB has eyes on a 1:00 p.m. (yes, 1:00) newscast as well, just like KTLA. Wouldn't be surprising. Ever since Don Corsini took over as GM of KSWB, he has made it into a KTLA Jr. KSWB and KTLA share anchors and reporters quite frequently. Now if Corsini could only send a chopper down to KSWB... I have no idea. Jenn Karlman was in the commercial but that doesn't really mean anything all evening anchors on KSWB are featured in the evening spots. I feel like they need to bring in another anchor to have two teams, a 4pm and 6pm team and a 5pm and 10pm. The question is, if they did bring in another anchor who do you think it will be? Or who would you want to see? Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13828-kswb-launching-4pm-newscast/#findComment-112938 Share on other sites

He worked well with Kathleen the time he came down to fill in. Maybe a Jenn/Andrew at 4 & 6pm and Rick/Kathleen at 5 & 10? It seems like they've settled nicely on Misha and Phil on the weekends. A big upgrade over Susan Lennon, who had been phoning it in these last few years. She was more energetic/fun to watch when they re-started their news ops in 2008. Fox 5 News at 1 is also starting on Sept 8. Erica Fox appeared in that commercial. So now I really think the structure of their anchor teams need to be adjusted. They should probably have 2 morning teams, a 430-7 early morning team and a 7-10 team that could also do the 1pm (obviously modeled after KTLA). TexasTVNews 1377
Well, you can add another afternoon newscast in San Diego, because KSWB FOX 5 is joining the 4:00PM bandwagon. http://changingnewscasts.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/kswb-gonna-add-news-400-p-m-san-diego/ Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13828-kswb-launching-4pm-newscast/#findComment-112966 Share on other sites

TexasTVNews 1377
I know that KDAF & KIAH both have NewsFIX and I'm not a fan of it, but why can't 33 & 39 be more like KTLA, KSWB, and/or WGN. Probably not, but they very could if they wanted to. The GM at KTLA is also the GM of KSWB so, he can squeeze a few more pennies out of Tribune for a chopper if he wanted to. Plus, they would be able to literally cover all of So.Cal. As it stands now, like you said they're at the mercy of KFMB, but then again so is every station in San Diego. FiveNews 371
Can San Diego support this much news? Is there really THAT much news going on in that city? I live in the LA DMA, so I understand the news machine here is always churning. San Diego, not so much. I get that local news is cheap to produce and that Corsini is making KSWB the KTLA of the south, but is this overkill? Thoughts and comments are appreciated! Well they've done fine with the programming they have. Keep in mind that 4pm is not a hard news hour, so I expect it to look similar to the 9am hour of the morning news, there will be fluff. And the 1pm is a midday broadcast which they don't have. If anything the addition of the broadcasts will keep the newsroom moving. SFTV 525
Not sure how the 1pm will last. Give it a while and they will go to Midday to compete with the big 3. KUSI did it years ago with the 1pm newscast and when they first debuted the 7pm newscast, downgraded to Noon to compete with KFMB, 11am with KGTV and then 10am when KNSD had a 10am newscast after the Today Show and no more. Im surprised KUSI still hasn't launched a primetime newscast or at least revive the 7pm. KGTV has been doing well with the 7pm for a good minute now. TheRob 937
I wouldn't be surprised if KSWB eventually stretched the 10:00 p.m. news into 11:00 too. Tribune has been pushing for it on its FOX stations in the Eastern and Pacific time zones. 1place4news 5
SanDiegoRadio.org reports: " 1PM will be anchored by Erica Fox and Andrew Luria, with Jason Handman on weather. 4PM will be anchored by Jenn Karlman and Andrew Luria, with Aloha Taylor on weather. 5PM will be anchored by Jenn Karlman and Andrew Luria, with Aloha Taylor on weather. 6PM and 10PM will be anchored by Kathleen Bade and Phil Blauer, with Aloha Taylor on weather. Weekends: 5PM and 10PM will be anchored by Misha Dibono and Brad Wills on weather. One more new show, "Fox 5 Sports Final" will air nightly for 15 minutes. It will be a wrap-up show with highlights, interviews, features, and analysis. It will be anchored by Troy Hirsch and Jordan Whitley. Each will be anchoring it on different nights." So unless I'm mistaken, weekday news blocks will be: 430am-10am, 1pm-2pm, 4pm-7pm, and 10pm-11pm. Disappointing that they didn't give Brad Wills a permanent weekday spot, and instead giving it to a relative newby at the station. Also, nice to see Phil get the weekday evening job. Rick Chambers would have been another great choice as well. Edit: Looks like Maria-Arcega Dunn is joining KSWB. She changed her twitter handle to https://twitter.com/FOX5Maria . 24994J 5551
10 1/2 hours of news on a broadcast station.... Geez. That's Tribune. This falls right into the pattern of many of KSWB's sisters... - WJW, 11 hours per weekday (65.5 a week) - WXIN, 10.5 (63) - WGN, 11 (61) - KTLA, 9.5 (59.5) - KWGN/KDVR, 5/6.5 (25/36.5), much of that overlapped Et cetera. In the case of WJW and KWGN/KDVR, their news output expanded mostly under LocalTV ownership. What has always surprised me is that WJW has a 7pm newscast, but not an 11pm newscast. You would think they'd have it the other way around (and that could happen when CraigyFerg's half hour talk show is committed for the 7pm hour next fall).
