Boston TV crisis: WHDH and WNEU

It's entirely possible.

Comcast (and other companies) just don't want to do it so they can keep the system as it is. Sooner or later, the cord cutters, shavers and the occasional "nevers" are going to catch up to them.

Judging by the action with WNEU, seems like Comcast is going into the cord-cutting era kicking and screaming.

As in "return to having cable" or "be so numerous that Comcast has to do something"?

Disney is already feeling the effects of cord-cutting. Look at ESPN coupled with their multi-gazillion dollar rights deal with the NBA. (Want to know why so many B-level free agents signed record-breaking deals this NBA offseason? Now you know.)

If it weren't for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and LucasFilm/Star Wars, Disney would be in a gigantic world of hurt right now.

What do you mean cord cutting era kicking and screaming?

Unlike Disney, Comcast has a vast reach as both content producer and distributor with both cable and internet. ("So you don't have cable? You still gotta pay us for Xfinity!")

I might not be surprised if they feel somewhat impervious to the trend especially in a market like Boston, thus making themselves free to toy with Joe Q. Public and place NBC on WNEU, forcing people no choice but to pay for what is supposed to be a free OTA signal.

But change will come. It only takes one major progressive-minded city to install a free-to-all wireless broadband setup.

Then why were you against NBC Boston barely having enough OTA coverage?

The more I read through this, the more I wanna punch my computer (or even cellphone) screen.

This is all just ridiculous--half of everyone here bitching about a station BARELY getting leeway in Boston, saying odd variations of "I'm hating on a station that hasn't even started broadcasting yet and I'm dividing everyone in the process so much, I'm such a lame for it! Waaaahhhh!"

Why?? It's not even that serious.

It's like every time it takes one step forward (and it feels like only one), some of us here just want it to take four steps back. For little reason at all.

It hasn't even debuted yet, and yet I want it to come in and out already. If it fails, it fails. If it succeed, it succeeds. At this point, I just don't give a shit anymore.

I just want all of THIS to end.

I'm done here.

*end rant*

Yeah, you can kind of file me under that. Not having a horse in this race, I root for NBC a little more every time anyone here confidently deems it a massive failure.

This whole mess reminds of me of this fall's election. Yes, NBC is power hungry and a big corporation trying to mow over "the little guy", but Ed is a grade A pain in the ass, so all of this couldn't have happened to a better guy.

Speaking of both of which, Im actually glad I dont see the chat window on the main page anymore because political gossip would go too far, but this thread is becoming a pain in the ass too so screw it, I'm really close to being done with it!

This.

See, its stuff like those you just mentioned that really motivates me want to recruit people to join me in the founding of an activist site for the tv industry now so that we wont just gossip over shit like this without doing anything about it, but rather, actually have an impact in the industry, which at this point, it could use some.

This thread is becoming a pain in the ass for you? Oh how ironic... Certainly your "contributions" have nothing to do with that...

Here's a good place to get your activist site started. Start it up, run it for a while and come back in say...3-5 years and let us know how it's going. Good Luck!

Your contributions suck too maybe even worse than you think mine is! And now we both are pains in everyone's asses, in fact, this thread is full of many pains in the ass!!

Dude. No. Thanks...but no.

Here's how to do it: Lease a subchannel from WFXT or WCVB.

I doubt that CBS would do it, and the rest of the channels are about 300 to 500 kilowatts so their signal probably isn't as good as those two.

That would work better in mid sized to smaller markets than it would in most larger markets.

But it's still a way to give the full market a signal. And I bet NBC can afford to pay a lot more for that bandwith then Laff TV does. People thought channel sharing was weird when they were first started doing it in the small markets too.

Chill out, man. It's only TV. It's not like they are showing anything watchable these days. And I'm not some TV snob. It's all news, trashy talk shows and reality shows. It's not like the old days when they would show movies or have some local programming.

You replied before I was able to finish my edit. Look at the last part of my post. I can't get too worked up over who runs the trashy talk shows in my market.
Then why does most everyone else on here get worked up over who runs the trashy talk shows?
Then you dont really care too much about station ownership do you?

Speaking for myself, I do care about ownership. But facts are facts.

Television has always has and always will be a business. Do we get entertained? Yes. Do we get informed? Yes. Does it often serve the public interest? Maybe. But the bottom line is that. The bottom line. I appreciate the enthusiasm for changing ownership for NBC to get on a proper airwaves. But already the shift has already changed for most people, again speaking for myself. Look, do yourself a favor and look at the world out there. There's really more to life than TV.

A good lesson we all could learn right here. And maybe we shouldn't care about station ownership.

I...really, really like this idea, in particular for WCVB. And I could see corporate supporting it, too--Hearst is one of the largest NBC affil owners, after all. I also don't think there's much risk to CVB's position in the market doing so, either--at this point it needs to be conceded that wherever NBC Boston ends up, unless it's on a proper signal, it's not going to be competitive for a good while. It only makes Hearst more money.

This at least buys NBC some time until they can get a proper signal or if there's some sort of FCC/government dispute. But of course I'm sure Comcast/NBC would prefer everyone in New England pay for Xfinity.

Hearst also co-owned A&E Networks with ABC and NBC and now is half owner of the fledgling Esquire Network.

I don't think the FCC has any rules requiring the broadcast networks to be over the air.

The FCC Order on the Comcast - NBC Universal transaction does require that the affiliation agreements must be negotiated by NBC separately from Comcast (p. 71). The order also states that Comcast cannot import a different NBC station or a direct feed during a retransmission dispute due to the non duplication rules written into the affiliate agreements (pp. 70-71). The only mention of OTA broadcasting in this section is that the pulling of an NBC affiliates signal during a retransmission consent dispute would hurt the economic viability of the stations harming OTA viewers.
