NBC launching new Telemundo San Diego O&O

Is TM20 going to have an actual TJ bureau???

Or will they just fake it?

I can't see NBC border bouncing a crew daily. They have also had theft problems in TJ.

I bet they show some fake presence in the form of blatant TJ packages and standups...maybe even a few "live" reports.

If they even try to fire up a LiveU or a Dejaro in TJ is would probably take out the entire Baja phone system...

Don't quote me on this, but I do believe they have a reporter and photog in TJ. I saw a pic of them on instagram a few weeks back. Not sure in what capacity they'll be using them or how often. I say in what capacity as in: will they do live shots or will they only do taped pieces, etc. and what limitation will they place on them? Also, T33 did have a few of those Dejero units deployed in TJ, so if T20 wanted to do live shots, I presume they'll have the capability to do so.

Edit: Here's the pic

Edit Edit:

And they have dual-branded mic flags...

I thought the launch went very smoothly. A few first day jitters, but that was to be expected. They need to adjust some of their camera filters in studio since it looked a bit soft and rough at different times. They had a few live reports. They did share a reporter with NBC but aside from that, their own reporters stayed on the Telemundo side with no crossing over to the other side. At 11pm, both Telemundo and NBC were live from the same location, covering the same story, at the same time. They could have easily used the bilingual reporter to do the story for both channels bur whatever, that's on them. Overall, a solid A for their first day.

Watching the 11 pm replay this morning...

Didn't see any local (Baja) sourcing of video...no TJ stand ups...no local baja communities mentioned in wx cept for Ensenada and TJ.

Local sports was pretty gringoized..no local stuff on the Xolos or the 3rdf place Latin basketball sensations "The Zonkeys"...

No Friggin Zonkeys!!!

What kind of bogus outfit is T-20?

I would also say it's pretty smooth,,,not flashy...not anything extra cool.

The old 2 reporters in the live truck thing is gonna get old real quick...the photogs will end up killing one ...or two. As soon as nobody is really looking I bet they cut that down to one reporter on most the breaking stuff.

I would have figured they would have flew a few mic flags sur...but it looks like NBC/TM is getting some kind of feed or freelancer stuff in TJ...cuz the video was pretty washed out.

I figure they will shoot a big wad during the Nov book...but for now it's just another MixMex newscast based on this side of the border.

I will be impressed if they can go find( and shoot) the sewage leaks into the TJ river. I doesn't take El Columbo or Walter Mercado to find that crap. That's a giant international story if they choose to own and milk that story for the big "debut".

Otherwise...

As one would expect from me...

I'm not impressed.

And if I see that "Alligator Bride" story again....

Is the San Diego/Tijuana market big enough for T20 to have a morning show at some point? I know Univision SD tried for a while but it didn't last long, I figured maybe it would be different if it had the backing of NBCU. Or maybe simulcasting T52 Los Angeles in the mornings and get them to put one or two SD/TJ stories and weather in there?

Thanks Eat, Happy 4th to you as well!

It was a solid first day, I think eventually we'll see them dive into a few other areas that are under served. The TJ crew im assuming will be freelance. I'm not sure when they plan to start covering TJ a bit more, but i'm chalking that up to them not being ready to go there.

It's going to be interesting how they plan to operate going forward. They are attached at the hip with NBC, but at the same time they have to do their own thing. They can't be sending out two reporters for the same story. I did notice that they sent one of the T20 MMJ's to Aquatica in Chula Vista to cover the sexual groping that occurred last week, and the interviews they conducted were in Spanish, the reporter did her package in Spanish, etc. She did not do a report for NBC, but they did use some of her B-Roll on their newscasts, but no interviews. Point being, is that they're going to need to work on those efficiencies.

It's a lot to start up an operation from scratch, so to tack on an AM newscast on top of what they have in the evenings is a lot to ask for right now. I do think that eventually, they'll add an AM newscast.

Is there a possibility of there being two trucks? That's what I've seen so far with NBC and Telemundo Boston. NBC gets the live truck and Telemundo has one of the little SUVs with a Dejero.

Happy 4th RKO and friends...

Yes, during this "honeymoon" anything and everything is possible. Keep in mind that San Diego alone is 4200 square miles large...so transportation / logistical is a big factor. The new "work flow" is based on a 1 person MMJ example...2 reporters is really a luxury once this whole puppy gets a tail wagging.

I guess we will see just how long they are comfortable running separate crews.

The network ticker(in the AM) seems to also be a little issue...it's all English....haven't seen a real TM-20 ticker yet....

And the anchors and wx babes are NOT as hot as the network fare....

And last...

There is currently NO dancing going into, and out of the commercial breaks. Every other Mexican newscast that I watch has dancing...and clowns...and little folks.

I wonder if it got screwed up with the NBC Today one. I imagine they use the same Namedropper hardware.

A lot of people complaining about not being able to see T20 on cable in Tijuana. When I checked their FAQ's page, no cable system is listed for south of the border. NOT a very good way to start off your operation, especially if you're touting bi-national coverage/focus on your newscasts. Also, DISH is not carrying T20 right now.

They've had 6+ months to get cable/sat coverage in Tijuana/Rosarito/Ensenada...

It's the one that runs under the network banner...it's a traffic/ temps ticker from what I saw. I don't know if that ticker is also running "news" in it. I was watching a 6:30am replay of the previous11pm show.

Maybe the FCC is holding things up?

Apparently they don't even have KTLM on the Izzi system in Reynosa/Matamoros. Izzi is the big kahuna in Baja California. We have a major problem. NBC better think about getting in touch with Izzi and getting a retrans agreement concluded, if one is necessary for this sort of international carriage.

Mexican satellite providers do not do local-into-local TV service at all. They will not factor into this situation. In terms of broadcast TV programming, they carry what they have to (national networks with large carriage and a suite of public channels), what their parent might own, and I think the Edomex state network often gets thrown in there because it's a Mexico City local.

What Telemundo20 had to give up the web address telemundo20.com...and turn it over to NBC?

There are a lot of other Telemundo 20's out there that I would have guessed already took the address?

Did NBC just already own it...and were sitting on it?

Anyone know?

maybe they own telemundo1-78.com also....except telemundo37...that's saved for Estrella.

NBC even owns Telemundo69.com?!? Didn't know that Comcast was getting into the Latino porn business :p

Review: Telemundo 20 News

It's an American newscast in Spanish. No cross border effort...never will be.

The female anchor Lizette Lopez is harsh on the eyes. She slouches and her chair need to belowered so we don't see her belly.

TV is a visual medium.

The anchorman looks like a miniature giant muffler man with a sleazy penciled in beard. He reminds me of one of those magnet toys where you tried to arrange the magnets into a beard.

If you want real dirty and real Mexican newscast...stick with canal 12 XEWT.

I get it...

The TM-20 news team is NOT allowed to travel to into Mexico without prior permission from NBC in LA....they have no insurance or work authorization arranged at this time....anything shot in Baja will be stringer or freelancers.

They broke into programming at 4 to briefly cover the shooting death of a taxi driver and passenger in TJ. The past two days, they've been covering a few stories, mainly involving the taxi drivers/problems/assaults near the border. Something must have happened, because that TJ based reporter deleted her picture from Instagram, and I have not seen her do any reports for T20. I think things will change coverage-wise, once they get on cable systems there.

I caught a few minutes on Monday and was surprised to see them do a live report from this side of the border. Usually, all their live shots are done in TJ. It does seem like they're a bit unprepared/demoralized by the switch. The newscast limped along, no mic flags, no bug. Felt weird to see them as anything but Telemundo 33.

I have this weird feeling XHAS's news operation will be a target in the next round of Entravision cuts. You know they're going to happen.

It's already started....

I saw an XHAS photog killing time between live shots...

And just down the street I saw a few of the XHAS sales weasels begging for clients like Calimax or Florido...

The sales weasels people I talked to call the new "demo" Confusing...
