Former WBZ-TV news anchor/reporter Shelby Scott has passed away at the age of 86. Scott later became the president of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and helped spearhead the merger with the Screen Actors Guild.

Aside from the Dodgers, I’m sure his famous moment came when he was the play by play announcer for the 1986 World Series on NBC, Especially when it came to game 6. After Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner botched that famous catch resulting in the Mets winning it, Scully uttered a more famous quote three minutes after that moment that went:

 

”If One picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words”, and there’s more to that quote.

My dad has fond memories of that “behind the bag” sequence, and Vin’s call made it really special. Of course, there was also his call of Hank Aaron’s home run record. The Braves just happened to be playing the Dodgers that night, and even though he was the announcer on the opposing team, he knew the gravity of the moment.

And I think the other thing he said was, "But more than that-- you have seen an absolutely bizarre finish to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets are not only alive, they are well, and they will play the Red Sox in Game 7 tomorrow."

It's a double whammy in Boston and WBZ. We lost Bruce Schwoegler last week, now WBZ mourns the loss of Uma Pemmaraju. Uma started her career at KENS 5 in San Antonio, then moved to KTVT/Dallas-Ft. Worth, and WMAR/Baltimore. Uma moved to Boston to anchor and report at WLVI and WBZ in Boston before moving to FOX News Channel in '96.

 

Prayers and condolences to Uma's daughter and family in this difficult time.

Jim Mueller, a WJ(K)W and WKYC sportscaster and Cleveland Browns color analyst from 1975-95 has passed away.

He was also a longtime spokesperson for (Ed) Mullinax Ford and Pat O'Brien Chevrolet.  I'm sure anyone growing up in Northeast Ohio remembers the jingle.
