WJW Launches New Graphics

WJW has picked up the updated "MOD-03" Graphics Package from Nexstar -- similar to that of WKRN.  They still have SAM's "Beyond" for music... Thank God another botched-up Tribune package is gone...

I like these graphics! It's so sad the old Tribune graphics they had to go!

The good news is that they went with the newest (and most tolerable) Nexstar package.

 

The bad news is that Nexstar has now made their mark on WJW.  I caught a blip the other day on the old look and Beau Weaver was already removed for a "spot voice" vo guy...

 

And this is the same package that WKBN over in Youngstown just switched to a few months ago.

 

Could this be the "NexstarOne" look going forward?

I would LOVE for WOOD-TV to have this package...This pacakge is a great universal package for all networks

Agreed.  It's more refined than GrayOne.  That font they use for it just gets on my nerves...

But with Nexstar's recent moves, they're starting to consolidate and cut back the diversity of their stations.  Creative departments have been largely eliminated, voiceovers are another "SpotVoice" client, and going forward, this could cheapen the look of Nexstar's stations even more.  And this is before the Tegna merger.

 

Some of the cues seem to be a little "off" during the 5pm I'm watching now.  I wonder if WJW finally went with some kind of automation (if they didn't already....)

With the use of the layered squares, I just think how it's an evolution of the latest Tegna graphics update and it's reliance on squares... And Nexstar's package will make those Tegna stations instantly look better.

Kind of shocking WJW went with the WKRN / WKBN package instead of WXIN. That said, WJW has at least avoided using a ticker...for now.

I think that WXIN package should be a must at any Nexstar FOX Top 50 market station...

I've been trying to figure out -- what exactly is this font?? I tried searching for it on Google Fonts, as it seems all the stations are now switching to a Google Font pacakge

save on licensing actual fonts from their creators...cheapness strikes again!

For what it's worth... no station groups are licensing their fonts. Hearst did try with Effra, but I am sure that completely got out of hand to enforce. At TEGNA, you can install Proxima Nova on any machine via an IT admin workaround that they built... and I am sure that they were not reporting back to the font foundry with a user count.

From what I've read, the font used by many Nexstar stations is actually "Wix Madefor Text".

Isn't GrayOne using Barlow (another open source font)?

If you don't like it, you're definitely not going to like what the NBC O&O's are using... (It's a modified version of Barlow)

When "MOD-03" Graphics first came out on WKRN in 2024, they were using a combination of Gotham and Monteserrat.

Actually the ticker and lower 3rd is apart of the first FOX graphics that Nexstar released.

Bottom line, it seems the station groups are going with open-source fonts to bypass licensing costs.

WEWS changed graphics in 1996 and kept their Edd Kalehoff news theme. WKYC updated their graphics package from time to time keeping The Great News Package until 1999 or so when Impact started to be used and in 2001 a slight update to the graphic package with The Tower. In 2006 we get new graphics and The Tower remains with a new style. Sometime later, the graphics package was overhauled and The Tower still in use. WJW gets new graphics but keeps the previous news theme from 2019. WOIO under 19 Action News had a lot of graphics changes, even changing logos but kept their perspective themes.

That's the Circa package WREG went with. It's the same one used at KRON and KLAS.

 

Of course, WREG's implementation of it didn't go well as far as the bug and ticker went at launch. They've fixed the bug part ever since, but the old ticker is still there.

It happened nearly a month ago when KLRT changed its voiceover, and we may possibly rename the thread to "The Ever-Evolving Nexstar Voice and Graphics Situation... Thread"!

Well then most of this site is at fault then, because there's multiple threads that "violate" various "rules"... Instead of airing your dirty laundry here, how about DM-ing a mod?

Anyway, it's a nice look. It's something KDVR needs to pick up stat. Insane that all three Nexstar stations in the market look virtually indistinguishable. I feel like it cheapens the look of a top 20 station looking the same as Grand Junction.
