Yes, and putting on your breaking news banners that DirecTV has 'censored' the network is useless and annoying to other customers of other providers when those DTV/U-verse viewers can't even see the banner or your channel!2 points

To which I offer up this: https://www.thedailybeast.com/house-oversight-chair-james-comer-promises-newsmax-hell-investigate-directv Again, theatrics when it's not needed. They did it because they got viewers angry enough to get the government (or one side of it, to be exact) involved. Now, they're threatening to investigate DirecTV for "censoring" Newsmax. Do I dare repeat myself once more on the reality of the situation? I feel like with each passing day that this drags on, I feel more and more of an urge to belt out, "Just give it a rest!" Two days of this was enough. That's all.2 points

ABC isn’t bringing back anything to that time slot that has higher production costs than what’s there already. News will control it with some form of GMA3 so long as the costs are low, ratings are stable and profits continue increasing.2 points

That's not happening. I wouldn't also be surprised if viewers would ask ABC to bring back All My Children or One Life to Live (even that won't happen).2 points

Speaking of culture wars, guess what Newsmax also did? They set up a website called IWantNewsmax.com (I'm not linking this). Here's what they want disgruntled DirecTV subscribers to do: They want them to call DirecTV and demand that Newsmax be brought back, or else they'll drop DirecTV. They want them to call their senators and representatives and stop the - ahem - "political censorship." They want them to go to said website and sign a petition saying that they fully back Newsmax. I talked about this in The News Center server. It's nothing but theatrics. Carriage disputes like this are the inner workings of business. Channels don't come cheap. Carriers have to negotiate on a deal for every channel. This is why you've been seeing regional sports networks drop like flies in the late 2010s. And "political censorship?" That's a bit rich considering DirecTV replaced Newsmax in the interim with The First, which is markedly similar to Newsmax in terms of content. DirecTV really wanted to continue carrying Newsmax. Newsmax wanted DirecTV to pay them for their position on the program guide, since their ratings are declining. The contract was allowed to expire instead. Another thing: If you connect the dots and look at how OAN reacted to also being dropped by DirecTV and eventually being dropped by Verizon (both from last year), you'll begin to notice that all they like to talk about is how the opposition are a bunch of losers, crybabies, etc. for doing what they did. Nowhere in their complaints do they state that they've simply been dropped -- they substitute the word for either "cancelled" or "censored." Both urged people to "join the fight" and call government officials in urging the providers responsible to reconsider. Guess what happened? OAN's efforts were ultimately fruitless, and if memory serves me right, Newsmax's effort will also come up short, simply because they failed to realize that the act of providers dropping channels is all part of business.2 points

Not too long, WSB's Newsroom became what is known as ACTION NEWS, which it still is today. As for the Newsroom branding, after a two-year hiatus, it moved to WXIA when it became 11ALIVE, which is also still is today. 1976 was the year WXIA resurrected the Newsroom branding to become 11 Alive Newsroom.1 point

A bit more on it from SVG, complete with some examples/mocks from the agency actually showing English graphics. Again, I could see some variant of this becoming NBC's default; the templates themselves aren't too far off from the current look. https://www.sportsvideo.org/2023/01/27/world-cup-2022-how-gameday-creative-built-telemundos-eye-popping-graphics-package/1 point

Not unless Wheel's prime access hour mandate is lifted, which I doubt will ever happen given that the only reason it exists was to avoid being slotted too close to the former NBC/CBS daytime version, which has been gone for over 30 years. Way back when, WPTZ was interested in picking up Wheel but they could only fit it at 5:00 PM. KingWorld said no deal and it went to a competitor (they do carry it today at 7:30). KTRK would have to truncate the 6:00 newscast which they never like to do. Any time the ABC O&O's put out a special that pre-empts Wheel on the other O&O's, KTRK airs it 3:30 to pre-empt Inside Edition before all the news. They also do not carry the CMA Red Carpet special that ABC feeds to the O&O's just before the ceremony (similar to how the NBC O&O's start Rockefeller Center Christmas Celebration at 7 instead of 8).1 point

Dispatch always held the advantage thanks to their early ownership of assets. That way, they could own EVERYTHING (radio, tv, newspapers, banks, and shoe stores) hence the WBNS call letters. By the time the FCC rolled out ownership bans on shared assets (radio/newspaper/tv), WBNS was grandfathered in and so was Taft's ownership of the WTVN stations. That lasted until Taft's restructuring, which broke that advantage, and WTVN-TV was spun off as WSYX. Nationwide couldn't have picked them up because of their WNCI/WRFD ownership, unless they sold them off. They hitched their fortunes to radio and opted to sell their existing TV stations to Young. Ironically, in the breakup of GreatAmerican/Citicasters, WKRC benefited from the union of the TV station with Jacor's radio sisters (and later Clear Channel). Columbus was always under-stationed and didn't really expand beyond 4, 6 and 10 until Sinclair's predecessor signed on WTTE. Later came WSFJ, and WWAT/WWHO. Sinclair's aggressiveness found a way to "keep" WTTE when they bought WSYX, and later took advantage of when LIN was selling WWHO with their JSA/SSA with Manhan Media. I really think Nexstar is going to take the CW with them when their agreement with WWHO (and other Sinclair stations) is up. By putting it on 4.2, it's their chance to compete against Sinclair with another channel that can counterprogram WSYX and WBNS, and compete against "FOX 28" in primetime news. Had Gannett still been the owner of the Tegna stations, I think they would be slightly better off than they are today. WKYC is a disaster under Tegna, when under the earlier guidance of Gannett, rose to the top of the Cleveland market for the first time in decades. Gannett instead decided to become the Nexstar of the newspaper industry, acquiring virtually all of the major newspapers in Ohio except for Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton and Youngstown. Their consolidation (under GateHouse) really consolidated their presence in places like Akron and Columbus, buying up the community newspapers (Dix) and the Beacon Journal (from Black Press), and using their existing Gannett holdings in Central Ohio to supplement their purchase of the Dispatch from the Wolfes.1 point

They were #2 with her and the ratings keep going up. She got her big pay check over at 10TV. I was told people told her not to go over there, but she saw the legacy of the station. Not only that, but she was popular with the public. When you have a big Q score they don't snatch you away from the competition. Angela Pace she wanted more $$$ at WCMH back in the day. 10TV under the Wolfe's snatch her up and 10TV over took News4 in 1992. Andrea Cambern as well got a paycheck too. in 1981, when Channel 6 was owned by Taft and was WTVN. Michelle Gailiun got a nice big paycheck as well too. Sinclair is known for not paying. WJLA is in a top 10 market, and Leon Harris and Maureen Bunyan who brought lots to the table didn't get renewed because they made too much under Sinclair's eyes. Let be honest. If she had stayed and at least was making 150K. She would of been at #1 on WSYX instead of making double the amount now sitting at #2 at BNS,.1 point

As you suggested, Jamie is outgoing; whereas, Rudabeh to me is reserved. Both of their respective personalities feed off and work well with each other. Due to Jamie's network commitments at the mothership, and so forth, there will be times when Jamie is away from the CBS Los Angeles anchor desk. Kristin Smith is a nice fill-in for those occasions (and filling in for Rudabeh, vice-versa) indeed. I always enjoyed Kristin whenever she anchored and reported for the station's "Sports Central" broadcasts previously, where I felt she was a bit under-utilized. Time will tell, but it is a good morning program so far!1 point

Including the very old demos that seek out cable talk channels regardless of the high channel number they are on? Surprised that no one has pointed out that those channels are listed as “CBS”, “ABC”, “Fox” and “PBS” … not “News8”, “10News”, “Fox 5/69” or “KPBS”. The generic displays on YouTube TV lend themselves DIRECTLY to CBS’s new branding convention.1 point

They even named HLN, which they identified as its old name, CNN Headline News but is basically Investigation Discovery 2 at this point… what with CNN having shifted it away from news to true crime before their recent gutting and offloading of the network to the WBD unit that runs ID, and Vice, which carries only one news program but runs mostly documentaries. In picking their examples of “uber-liberal” news outlets, Newsmax reached so high in trying to prove their point, they’re halfway to the Milky Way.1 point

Not happening because it wasn’t successful. From Variety…. “GMA3” has also been a bright spot. In 2021, the program generated nearly $43.4 million in advertising, a jump of 26.1% from the nearly $34.4 million it captured in the previous year.’ This tells me that they will continue with what has been working. Could see them dropping the ’WYNTK’ part of the title, but I wouldn’t expect anything radical. Robach and Holmes have been gone for nearly 2 months and the show has been humming along just fine without them. No need to fix what isn’t broken.1 point

They should just rebrand it back to Good Afternoon America and bring back Josh Elliott & Lara Spencer. From what I understand it had good ratings.1 point
-
I think they can find success somewhere. NewsNation could use the help, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they both landed at a local station (NYC, DC, Miami, etc…) too. Honestly, I think Robach & Holmes overplayed their hands and thought they were too popular to get rid of. ABC was just waiting for them to blink and when they did was ready to cut them loose.1 point

Amy and TJ are free to love one another to the ends of time. However there are consequences for so brazenly flaunting adultery with your other married colleague while you both are public figures on a program that prides itself as a family-centric broadcast. No one is judging them for being together, it’s the way they went about disclosing it. It really shouldn’t be this difficult of a concept to grasp, I’m starting to believe some are intentionally missing the point.1 point

NextTV asked about the “22 liberal news channels” that Newsmax claims are still funded by DirecTV. They include uber-liberal bastions like NewsNation and The Weather Channel, plenty of general-purpose channels which have one or two news programs, and a few that literally have no news. I can’t with these people. https://www.nexttv.com/news/newsmax-ids-its-list-of-americas-23-liberal-news-networks-topped-by-abc-cbs-nbc-cnn-and-the-weather-channel1 point

For some stations, a chunk of the large legacy audience is older and still familiar with the channel numbers as the 'brand.' Probably less so or close to none with some of these 4th place CBS stations, or a new one like CBS DETROIT. And certainly a lot less so than 20+ years ago, and as you note fading further. Think WPVI or KTRK for example. FWIW my Hulu screen shows channel logos but it's alphabetical (including cable nets) - and for the local stations uses the network name as the first letter for(so ABC 10 before CBS sorting1 point

I agree. I use YouTube TV and regardless of the channel number, the first channels that appear are CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox. I'm in San Diego, so the order isn't even in number order... 8, 10, 7, 5... I'll also add, that's the default, but you can customize the order of the channel listings by putting your most watched at the top. So in the end, that channel number really doesn't matter1 point

I'm really liking how the chemistry is coming together with the KCAL Mornings anchor team. Jamie Yuccas is off this week. I think she brings a spark to the 7am block. Social Desk anchor Kristin Smith is filling in for Jamie. She slid right in to Jamie's role and has done a terrific job anchoring. Marci Gonzalez is off today (not a huge fan) and 10am/noon anchor Amy Johnson was filling in. Amy anchors the 10am and noon solo so there is never any co-anchor interaction. The way she connected with Rudabeh was amazing. Truly job well done by KCAL management. Give this team some time to grow a following and I truly believe they will be a force to be reckoned with in the mornings in LA.1 point

I feel that former KCBS-TV director John Lipmann, who helped mastermind the "Action News" format in the 1990s, played a role in the perception of newscasts on the station as well. I'm old enough to remember how over-the-top it was to watch at the time. But, over the years, KCBS-TV is pretty much like those certain sports franchises that perennially have been plagued by poor management, that are close to, if not, last in the team standings and quite a few players (in this case, reporters and anchors) who leave to go to other teams (the competitors across town, etc.).1 point

Since they added WDJT to my cable system, it's been just either '9' or '605' in the Roledex of my mind so I knew where to tune, and now it's just 'CBS 58' because that's what they've been every day since December 1994 and never changed the branding. Their first priority was to get established, then build a news division; on that front they've been very successful and now you nearly forget that CBS bounced around 6, 12 and 18 for so many decades, and they've got a good syndicated schedule. Meanwhile, WWJ has just...kinda existed. They just pass through CBS-owned content in syndication and outside of a few Lions games here and there and watching CBS, there's really been nothing to keep you there because 2, 4 and 7 are always there in their niches. Same when they purchased WKBD and made it just another bland UPN/CW station. And it's either 62 CBS, CBS Detroit, CBS, WWJ, CBS 62...never any consistent branding. And it didn't help that CBSNS had old guard management at the Westinghouse stations that wasn't changing a thing any time soon, or dysfunctional idiots with battling egos who bought stations to get into a golf club, and in Detroit, just never really tried. Still ended up a better result than getting WADL as an affiliate, though; that entire station is a headache and a half as it is now. Imagine having to fight them every few years on affiliation terms.1 point

Looks like WPXI reshuffled things around with jeopardy second run at 1 instead of 3:30 then dish nation instead of 3pm. NBC News Daily now airs at 3 instead of 1 (where they aired days for many years) leading into the news at 4.1 point

15 and a half hours. That's how many hours of news KTLA would air every single weekday if this goes through. 4AM-2PM, 3-7, and 10-11:35PM. The only other outlets in the Southland that do more hours of news than KTLA every weekday... is KNX News - 97.1 FM. KTLA would actually TIE (yes, your hearing this right) Spectrum News 1 SoCal for the second-most local hours of news every weekday on either radio or TV (SN1 SoCal is on 5AM-7PM plus half-hour installments at 9:30pm, 12 Midnight and 1:00am. They air other stuff during other hours like L.A. Times Today, L.A. Stories, etc. Yes, I did check the schedule myself.).1 point

With the peak severe weather season coming, Fox Weather will have its big chance to show its strength. It's clear that severe weather is a big weakness for TWC.1 point

Overnight coverage is originating from both NYC with Jane Minar and Orlando with Katie Garner. They are not using a control room and are instead just alternating "emergency override control" segments on their own. As a result, they can't appear on the same blocks together, so they're just alternating blocks. i.e. Jane hosts the A block; uses the touchscreen to end the override and head to break; Katie hosts the B block; goes to break; Jane hosts the C block, and so on. They have revamped the WOFL setup a bit, adding in a background. Also, despite still not having a proper wireless mic and IFB setup, at least now Katie has a bit more slack in her wires so that there's not the concern about moving too far from the wall and pulling a wire. The lighting may need a bit of work. The blue lighting is strongly casting on Katie's arm whenever she uses the touchscreen. They could probably turn that down a bit. She also has to turn off to the side and walk halfway off cam whenever she needs to manipulate something on the computer because they weren't able to get a podium with a computer set up in the on-camera area as of yet. Overall, kudos to them again for staying live all overnight. TWC ended coverage at 1 AM ET.1 point

I'm not a big fan of the FOX company itself however FOX Weather is becoming one of my favorites. The Weather Channel used to be my favorites but they have been dropping the ball when it comes to Severe WX coverage. WX doesn't stop on the weekends as we all know. Two thumbs up to FOX Weather for being there when severe WX is in my area and for the awesome coverage they put on.1 point

Fox Weather should go out and promote the fact that they are always there. I know TWC tends to treat severe weather as a secondary thought, especially at night or on weekends.1 point
-
It definitely appears that Fox Weather does a lot better during severe weather events, especially on weekends. They are willing to run 24/7 where TWC fails miserably.1 point
-
There's severe weather with numerous tornadoes happing now in Iowa. Fox Weather is covering it live. TWC is not covering it. Fox Weather is 1000x more attentive to severe weather/tornadic events, while TWC has a massive bias toward tropical systems and winter storms. The execs over at TWC seem to like tropical/winter weather better because they're a "sure bet", and they have multiple days in advance to schedule on-air shifts and send meteorologists out into the field. Severe weather, on the other hand, is more prone to have less days notice in advance, and also a greater chance of being a total bust if the tornado outbreak fails to materialize. TWC seems to have no interest in covering an event that's not a "sure thing". One note about Fox Weather's coverage is that they're not using a control room / main studio / multiple hosts. It's just nonstop solo-hosted "emergency break-in" style coverage with Jane Minar where she stands at the podium near the weather center and controls the broadcast herself using the touchscreen on the podium. I don't know why TWC refuses to do something like this when they're unsure of the potency of a severe weather event. It seems pretty cost effective compared to having a full staff there during off-peak hours, and at least it gives Fox Weather the ability to be live to cover this outbreak, especially when things get a lot more severe than originally forecasted.1 point

Fox Weather has been doing live severe weather coverage all day and night on the severe weather warnings in the South. As much as they’ve had a lot to criticize about, they still do some stuff right compared to TWC.1 point

To be fair, I believe these simulcasts are being added on the second station in most, if not all markets – not the primary one. The hour is being added on KICU, not KTVU, and KICU's programming lineup in the middle of the day is a wasteland anyway and has been for a long time.1 point

It wouldn't be bad.. however it would be sad. TWC has been the original 24 weather station. What is has become is just plain sad. The only thing they've had great coverage of is hurricanes where they go 24 hours around the clock for days. They need to take that same approach to severe weather events. THEY KNOW WHEN THEY"RE COMING. I hope this is a wake up call for TWC to provide better service and coverage of severe weather going forward. Long form programing is fine. I like their shows but it should be later in the day or just on weekends. There needs to be more live weather coverage. With that said I've quite enjoyed Fox Weather and what they're trying to do. Their coverage of severe weather has outdone TWC a lot of the time. Once they get their staffing up and if they get on cable, they are going to be quite the competition for TWC if not supersede them.1 point
-
Granted they have the full force of FOX News behind them in terms of production and news gathering, but with regards to weather- so does The Weather Channel (with a nearly 40-year head start!), and FWX absolutely put them to shame with this coverage overnight.1 point

John Marshall and Amy Freeze took over coverage at 4:56am ET. It seems that because they already have a naturally-long shift until 12pm ET, they basically woke up and came straight to work and went on air an hour earlier than normal with no time to prep. John Marshall admitted on air that he did not have a chance to see the horrific Mayfield, KY video until they showed it on air. He watched in horror at what he was seeing as the control room played back the video. He seemed to not be aware that there were deaths in Kentucky until they told him over his IFB. It's a hard situation to be in when the network doesn't have enough staff on standby to make everyone's shifts a bit shorter, but still way better than TWC, which has still only been providing very short 45-second updates at :00 and :30 of every hour while failing to cover the storms the rest of the time. Edit: After KY Governor Beshear's speech ended at 5:10am ET, Jane Minar picked up the coverage from the solo update podium in the other studio. She thanked viewers for staying with Fox Weather and informed viewers that live coverage will resume soon. They put the stream into an automated series of maps customized for the severe weather event, showing automated live radar/watches/warnings. There is no audio whatsoever, presumably because the normal music used in automation is way too cheery, and they don't have anything more appropriate readily available. I think the production team realized that having John and Amy in the building was no help if they haven't even had a chance to be briefed on what's going on, especially since they have to go live on Fox Business in less than 50 minutes. I'm going to guess that they called an immediate production meeting so that they can get up to speed on everything and go live on Fox Business at the top of the hour much more prepared. I don't blame them.1 point

I kind of wish a big local owner like Nexstar or Gray owned WeatherNation since they could use the local stations as someone to work through for national coverage. Local stations have been on the ball tonight.1 point
-
Now they just need to work on their distribution. For a Roku user, the only way to really watch it is to seek it out on the Fox-owned Tubi app. But yes, they are doing a great job covering the storm as TWC (and pretty much all of the other national news networks) have dropped the ball on this severe weather event.1 point
-
Fox Weather is going to cover it live all night long with minimal commercial interruption. Meanwhile, TWC went to long form at Midnight ET and said that they will only occasionally break in with updates for the rest of the night. During a weather crisis, kudos to Fox Weather for sticking with this. Shame on TWC for ignoring a deadly emergency because it's not affecting the northeast.1 point
