  2. That reminds me of something on WBAY a couple years ago where there was an ad for a home medical provider showing their building and ten seconds later coming out of that break... 'Breaking news from Allouez, where a car has driven into a building'...and they cut to that same home medical building, now with a car halfway through its front window (thankfully nobody hurt there). Gotta love it when the sponsor somehow gets 'lucky' with another mention without the ad department getting involved.

  5. And of course THAT had to happen somewhere. Pringles, Mastercard, ABC, NBC, and now, XXX (the) CW. Although after 17-18 years of the same exact thing, this feels like a breath of fresh air. It had to almost be predicted that NewsNation would get the shorter end of the stick. Just goes to show how much people don’t use cable anymore.

  8. “Brought to you by Jack’s”? That should be used for only FORECASTS. Whether or not they screwed up sponsorship, it’s a good improvement for the station, even since they were using that sometimes-low-budget Gray graphics sliding thing that looks like your news budget is $2,500.

  9. Even if NBCU has such shows in its back catalog (which is highly doubtful), why would the network and its affiliates want to air years, or perhaps decades, old lifestyles, home, or travel shows? Those types of shows can become dated quickly as trends change. But the real issue is that day and date shows are seen as better performers for broadcast. That's why you see news and sports popping up so much. Scripted shows are moving to streaming because they can get real viewership data and people can watch them whenever they want. There's a reason why stations like KTLA and WBTV stay as local as possible. Viewership...and thus ad dollars...are better. Which reminds me of something. Does anyone remember when the late Jim Rogers wanted to take his Intermountain West station KSNV all local outside of NBC network hours? It was 2013 and Rodgers started dumping his syndicated product (Jeopard, Wheel, Judge Judy, Inside Edition, Dr. Phil, and Rachel Ray) in favor of local news. Here is an interesting article from January 2013. It has some very intriguing insights. Jim was about a decade ahead of his time. In regards to adding so many hours of local programming, Jim said, "I want something I can be proud of and, if it’s got to cost me some money,” that’s OK." Unfortunately, he died about 18 months later. The station would ultimately be sold to Sinclair and they immediately started undoing Jim's plan because, as we all know, they are not OK if it's got to come some money.

  12. The green shade was absolutely blinding when in a full bar indicating gains, the gold shading is confusing, and the entire package is a middle finger to those who are colorblind. When your competition (Bloomberg here, since FBC has become an FNC annex, let's be serious) upgraded their presentation to 4k specifically to show more information, this is a major step backward. There is no reason for the index numbers to be that big, and it will definitely get adjustments, hopefully, especially if they do that superimposition of the live Dow they occasionally do on heavy market days. (No change so far on CNBC World, by the way)

  13. What a step backwards. Yellow-on-white and white-on yellow is next-to-impossible to read. The overly large and bold alerts remind me of seeing an all-caps Trump tweet. I also miss the news scroll. There's just nothing that I like about the new design and I wish they would ditch it.

  14. In the short of it, they want their balance sheets to show lower operating costs than revenue so it boosts interest from perspective buyers. This is what Meredith did before they sold to Gray. If debt equity is high, this other method will be the most attractive things to Wall Street. You're pointing out the single largest problem with having large-scale station ownership. They have no connection to the community they serve or local values. They only care about finances. You are right that these are part of the value of the station images with the public, but the finances are far abstracted from that. No one is looking or cares. It's all about the balance sheet at the end of the day.

  15. Makes sense, however, have you read or heard anything else, or just using the evidence we've seen so far? Also, if they were prepping for a sale, wouldn't they have kept the anchors, which is part of the value of each stations image with the public.

  19. The feedback in the comments of the Variety article is resoundingly negative. And Variety isn't some curmudgeon factory. There's no advantage to the CNBC viewer in 'feeling' like the rest of NBC. In fact, for some, that's a negative. Graphics that made use of light effects and dimension were core to the CNBC brand. People in finance are used to darker screen backgrounds as well vs jarring white. That said white and blue was the CNBC look of the 90s but that observation isn't making them more likeable among some core finance nerd viewers - see the comments here

  20. Then the question is what do the ratings look like? If WMTV is #1 (And I'm pretty sure it's between them and WISC?) then "If it broken, don't fix it" might apply. That said, WISC did blow up their graphics and branding a few years back...

  21. Considering the debate's other iffy sponsors...they lucked out big time in getting their logo as visible as it was since the Free Beacon and Rumble were its main sponsors and them, along with Megyn's SXM show, only got bookend mentions. Could have been a lot worse for them.

  23. This de-affiliation trend of their logos is going to be interesting if it ever reaches the fox affiliates. Especially stations like WALA and WVUE who have branded as "Fox 10 and "Fox 8" for almost a generation. However, this could come in handy in Mobile, especially if they decide to snag NBC away from WPMI after next year and put it on 10.2. It also unifies the branding in markets like Biloxi and Hattiesburg, these are both markets that have dual affiliations but run the same newscast in many time slots. WLOX and WDAM largely refer to themselves by their call letters.

I don't think the "WMTV" brand is strong enough to stand on its own (I'm not even sure that a majority of Madison TV viewers are aware that channel 15 is WMTV, much less call them by that). It's a very different situation than WKOW, for instance, which has used their call letters in their branding for as long as I can remember and has a lot of built-in equity in their local brand. Gray's decision to drop network branding unilaterally, regardless of market conditions, has left me scratching my head. Not to discredit the hard-working staff at WMTV, but I just don't think that their brand can hold its own against NBC in the Madison market.

  25. This is why I avoid posting most newscasts from 2010 and later. Besides, why should I? I collect *VHS and Betamax*, not DVR recordings... On the other hand, videos will be coming slowly but surely to the AVTB account. There is now a 10-video limit per day, then it forces the account to verify with a QR code or picture or some random thing. I guess the site thinks we're spamming it or something...

  26. You're confusing the viewers commenting on that video with the members on this site. What is it exactly that you think they are trying that is modern? Your next sentence talks about "modernizing their logo" but they literally copied a logo that was used in Miami in the 80s.

  31. I think they are doing that to some extent, at least I've noticed John (and formely Elise) signs off with the anchor on the 8am/9am shows as a sort of 'cohost'. Although it would be cool to assign him to different interviews too. Also given the press release it seems the 8am will be permanently hosted by Chris and not Mary?

  33. Good Day DC's Jeanette Reyes is leaving WTTG. She says it's focus on her kids. Reyes and her husband/morning compeditor Robert Burton from WJLA went viral for their humorous "news couple" social media videos. Bittersweet because she's in the prime of her career. This feeds into the "can we have it all" discussion: successful careers, and time with family.

  39. Looks like they’ve dusted off the ol’ Action 16 moniker from the 70s-2000s for their new investigative reporting. I feel like it’s the first we’ve seen any WNEP branding onscreen without the big surrounding box and call letters for quite a while. Doesn’t look bad.

Noticed that my station WABC (ABC7 New York) has now been utilizing Virginia Hamilton (The View, Localish, GMA and GMA3) much more often including the voiceover for Mornings at 10; I wonder if she will be the new voiceover full time for the station when their new graphics debut or will they follow ABC30’s lead?   42. The WMTV logo got "de-peacocked" and it looks ridiculous. They should just drop that swoosh element if they're not going to fill the space with anything. Better yet, they should reimagine the logo entirely when they get the new graphics package (which will hopefully come sooner, rather than later, because they have the most dated looking package in the Madison market.) Based on a few recent social media posts, they are now branding themselves as "WMTV" and "15 News," instead of "NBC15."
