Something seems wrong when you have three large companies coming together to offer a bundled package of sports content. Almost like you need an independent operator to carry the content independently....much like a CABLE COMPANY. I've said it a million times, this reeks of the vertical integration that the movie studios once had with their movie houses. This is why they were broken up and why Viacom was separated from CBS in the 1970s to syndicate it's content. And here we are today, where someone else's content on another streaming service is more of a token offering.3 points

DirecTV wasn't carrying WHAG. However, when they entered this retransmission agreement in 2015, DirecTV agreed to pay Nexstar what they called an unlaunched station fee until that station was added to DirecTV (page 13 of the linked agreement), which my read between the lines is that compensation was comparable to what they'd pay for a big-4 affiliate in the Washington DC market. DirecTV argued Nexstar knew WHAG was losing NBC at the time this agreement was made and deliberately didn't tell them about the upcoming change during negotiations, and also didn't tell them during the course of the agreement even when other stations had programming changes. Nexstar argued the unlaunched station fee wasn't contingent on the NBC programming on the former WHAG, now WDVM. DirecTV believed otherwise hence the lawsuit. According to Wikipedia, WDVM wasn't added to DirecTV until 2020, which is past the expiration of this agreement.2 points

I don't fault Nora for wanting to move the broadcast to DC, as long as it doesn't massively disrupt the flow of production.2 points

Katie (Katherine then) was the Pentagon correspondent for NBC and was co-anchor of the much more buttoned up Sunday Today program. She also commanded hours of NBC’s coverage during Columbine, 9/11, London subway bombings, Hurricane Katrina, etc. She also held an impromptu interview with Bush senior that was well regarded. CBSEN didn’t work out for her but she has the chops for serious news. Statements like this might give her comments on sexism a bit of credence. In my opinion, David Muir is one of the worst anchors to grace any of the evening newscasts but you seldom hear criticism that he’s better suited for GMA, which he arguably was when Diane retired.2 points

If it gets bad enough, that gives the networks the right to void their agreement(s) and yank their affiliations because Allen would be in default of any particular agreement. While it wasn't said why WBNX lost the CW in 2018, financial default by their owners (Winston Broadcast/Ernest Angley) may have been the impetus since their agreement with them was to last through 2021. If this was to happen, it would be a great speculatron thread. Not a lot of local options in their markets given the feelings the FCC has towards networks seeking subchannel space on another station.2 points

Copying and pasting some of the release since Forum has a paywall. First Forum has dealt with NBC in decades since swapping for ABC in Fargo. Forum Communications Company is expanding once again in South Dakota. The acquisition will enhance Forum Communications’ ability to serve residents throughout South Dakota and to be a trusted news source for the state, said Josh Rohrer, vice president of broadcasting for Forum Communications. “Combining the excellence of KNBN’s existing local news with the experience and reputation of Forum Communications will help to create a new home for the very best in local news, weather and sports in South Dakota,” Rohrer said. KNBN is the only independently-owned TV network affiliate in South Dakota. That will remain the case, Rohrer said, but this acquisition creates an opportunity for expanded reach and impact. The acquisition includes certain satellite stations delivering KNBN’s signal to the entire Rapid City DMA, according to a Forum Communications press release. Viewers can also expect collaboration with Sioux Falls Live/ KSFL-TV and the Mitchell Republic on stories of statewide importance, Rohrer said. “We have big plans in South Dakota,” said Mary Jo Hotzler, chief content officer for Forum Communications. “Mitchell has long been a news leader in the state and is unmatched when it comes to high school sports coverage. Sioux Falls has quickly become a go-to source for news and sports, especially the (SDSU) Jackrabbits, and we are excited about adding Rapid City. This is just the beginning for us in the state.” The acquisition of KNBN is subject to receipt of regulatory and other approvals.1 point

Katie most definitely has the chops for hard news, no question. David Muir is not bad at all, his broadcast is bad. Many here have actually said David's versatility would be suited for GMA compared to George Stephanopolus.1 point

Katie and Diane both come from hard news backgrounds. Katie is not “more of a talk show host”. Her talk show with ABC failed.1 point

It is even more complicated than that. DirecTV agreed to pay Nexstar a fee even though they were not retransmitting what was then NBC affiliate WHAG starting in 2015. The $10.5 million is what DirecTV paid to not carry that station from when it lost NBC on July 1, 2016, to November 2018, when DirecTV learned it was no longer an NBC affiliate. Because I am a nerd... all the filings in the case are here.1 point

Looks like just the 5pm is moving to the virtual studio. The other shows will still most likely be in the new KCAL copied set.1 point

Hagerstown is in the Washington, DC market, so DirecTV carried the station throughout the spot beam, essentially serving as an alternate for WRC.1 point

Katie is a great TV personality, but she's never been really a hard news type anchor. She's more of a talk show host, and her style didn't cross over well into hard evening news casts. Diane may be also more of a talk show host, but she knew how to present an evening newscast well.1 point

Nexstar's DC bureau is located in the same building as NBC/FOX/C-SPAN. It possible they renovated/expanded that space for NewsNation DC ops because this view of the capital (which I assume is from real windows) is pretty much identical to Fox News DC. That said, my guess is that this is just another studio (in the same building).1 point

He had no business getting into the news business. I feel sorry for all the stations under this division....1 point

I don’t quite remember Katie walking away as much as CBS moving in a different direction, similar to what is happening now and has happened the last 5 or so anchors. Not disputing that sexism is rampant across media industries but I don’t think it’s had much to do with failure of the Evening News and particularly Norah. She’s just bad.1 point

Here's another view from the opposite angle. That's quite the panoramic multi-window view of the capitol. Does anyone know if this is the same building where NBC, Fox, and C-SPAN are located, or if this is somewhere else? And do we know if this is the same building as NewsNation's previous DC studio?1 point

Yeah it turns out these moves were nothing to get excited about. Although I did not know that the 6pm news is now an hour on FOX5 (likely to compete with the PIX11 Evening News).1 point

Yellow and blue on a morning show... how original. The old wooden look was definitely unique. Was it the prettiest for the morning? Probably not, but it was unique.1 point

I loved Katie on Today, but she is totally out of touch on this one. Not to be political, but Katie habitually inserts sexism and feminism into many issues. Of the 3 evening programs CBSEN has most frequently had women as an anchor of the weekday broadcast (herself, Chung, and O'Donnell). Even in her book, Katie blamed her failure at the evening news on sexism rather than her softening the tone of the broadcast and adding editorials. Comparatively I dont recall that much criticism of Diane Sawyer's tenure on WNT. This isn't an issue of representation. Women may not be the anchors in the evening but they are elsewhere. Face the Nation, CBS Mornings and CBS Sunday Morning are all lead by female anchors. The Today Show has dual female anchors, Robin Roberts is basically the face of GMA, Savannah dual anchors a lot of NBC's breaking coverage. Not to mention female majority anchor teams on local stations across the country.1 point

So the "News on MY9" is a repeat of the hour long 6 O'Clock News on FOX5, and even says "previously recorded" on the upper left corner of the screen with the correct time and temperature on the FOX5 bug.1 point

It just occurred to me... This package is essentially an updated version of the 2015-ish KOIN package...1 point

Interesting they’re finally doing more news. Other O&Os have far surpassed their output. WTTG in DC is practically on all day — but they’ve had other local programming other than news, a show like The View at 7 and Jim Lokay’s political late night show Final Five at 11:301 point

They also dumped the "ABC" from their logo. Probably an isolated occurrence, unlike the slow purge that Gray has been doing to many of their stations. I like it better than the WDCW package for sure. I just hope Nexstar has some new looks in the wings since the current packages are starting to get stale.1 point

CNN as well despite any assurance that they are a genuine news channel. If the channels' day is filled with punditry and opinion of ANY kind, that ship has sailed. Sadly, the concept of a "news channel" is long gone. The only thing that even comes close are the "live" variants like NBC News Now and Fox's LiveNow.1 point

It was truly the most pointless of the Bally channels outside of when FSN had the Carolinas channel around the Bobcats/Hornets. That team HAD the best arrangement by having their games fill time on News 14 (now Spectrum News), but of course RSN greed had to get in the game. And it was likely in that Cox-dominated market that the Pels saw the writing on the wall and that Bally had much less leverage with Cox.1 point

Listings show they grabbed StartTV, so at least it's something better (if not our board's demo).1 point

Providers have finally updated the schedule for TheGrio, which now might as well be called "Justice Central.tv.two" (I hate their naming scheme), as the daytime schedule is made up of those Sony sitcoms and The Cosby Show, the nighttime is all Allen court shows, and random episodes of sports filler Masters of the Game fills out the schedule to comply with the news requirements left in the BNC contracts. Zap2it is still showing a This TV schedule on WHDH-DT2, but it might as well be something just to report anything but 'off-the-air' while Sunbeam tries to get new programming arranged.1 point

Noticed that as well. There is one comment on her latest post asking where she’s been. Her Instagram bio still lists her at PIX, which obviously hasn’t been updated he latest post has a quote and ended the message with “the come back is always greater than the setback”0 points
