  1. Am I the only one who watched the interview? Tony didn't suggest that Palestinians shouldn't exist; that's a ridiculous thing to post. There was no disrespect from Tony. His questions were certainly direct but were asked with a calm voice and a clear invitation for Coates to respond openly. Have any of you lobbing criticism at Tony actually read Coates' book? Coates explained that he wrote about the Israel-Gaza conflict exclusively through the lens of the plight of the Palestinians and did not at all discuss the Israeli perspective or the violence they've endured because he felt the Israeli perspective was widely covered elsewhere in media. So of course it's fair game for a journalist to ask why he chose to do that and the potential implications of that. If you write controversial or one-sided points of view in a book and go on a hard news network's morning show to discuss it, you should expect pointed questions about those views. This is the network of 60 Minutes; not People Magazine.

  2. But if Vance says A and Walz says B, the average viewer may just believe whoever they're voting for. The purpose of network fact-checking is for a neutral third party to let the audience know what the truth is. As the old saying goes if one person says it's raining and the other person says it's sunny it's the journalist's job to clarify what's actually happening based on evidence, not simply afford both parties a soundbite. This is why social media companies are in such trouble. You cannot let people use your broadcast platform to spread misinformation and not do anything about it

  3. Sadly, like the CNN presidential debate between Biden vs. Trump in June, the co-moderators won't be doing any fact checking in the CBS vice presidential debate at all. It is a shame, because Brennan is one of the best interviewers among the Sunday morning political show hosts indeed. More importantly, fact checking in debates, particularly with regard to the upcoming consequential U.S. presidential election, is critically important, in my humble opinion.

  4. I think Brian leading CBS News could make the evening news broadcast instantly more competitive. People love him.

  5. Good point. CBS is paying Norah $8 million annually. Brian Williams made $6 million annually on MSNBC. Assuming they match his cable rate, CBS would be saving $2 million dollars on Brian (even more more if they go lower). In all fairness, Maurice and John are probably the cheaper option, and previous big name hires like Katie Couric have not elevated CBS from the perpetual third place. But if even Dan Rather, one of the biggest anchors in news history couldn't elevate CBS from third, maybe that's just their lot. Everyone can't be first place. At this point their goals should be to increase the ratings, and be more competitive.

  6. The segment needed to be longer, they were getting into a real conversation and there was only 20 seconds left. When I say CBS Mornings is the smarter of the three morning programs, this is what I mean. These are the substantive conversations that Today used to have and it and GMA now lack. Tony asked good questions, and Coates gave good answers. I think what turned people off from Tony was the way he personalized asking his first question, rather than just lobbying a general question. It also seemed like Tony was advocating for one side in his questioning of why Coates only advocated for one side.

  7. FOXNET is used as an emergency back up service. After Hurricane Laura hit in 2020, KVHP was taken off the air. FOX piped in the network on cable via FOXNET until the station was able to get back in full operations later that year.

  8. CBS has been dealt a lot of blows over the past few years, but after what Brian Williams did at NBC, he's still not fit for a network newscast again. Now when (or even if) Matt Lauer ever crawls back from the mess he created. Sad to say, he's more credible then all of the Trump-nets put together, and that's not saying much....

  9. Not fact-checking during debate leaves the American public at a disservice because it allows candidates to make any claims. I also wish CBS followed the other networks by muting mics to avoid cross-arguing

  10. Based on the very negative social reaction to this interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates where Tony basically said his new book should be 'in the backpack of an extremist' and questions about whether Palestinians should exist, whatever promotional juice they had for the third hour is immediately gone because now PG has to do damage control around this mess. I'm not going to be shocked if multiple publishing agents are pretty much done with the show if you get overly aggressive questioning about what you wrote on a morning show where your publisher paid for the promo. Morning show interviews about beach reads never get this heated, much less most bio or non-fiction fare. Like you should question about the book for sure, but Tony was virtually screaming at the author and it's a shock that Ta-Nehishi was still able to joke at the end of this.

  11. I'm glad KTLA is keeping his memory alive... with the Sam Rubin Green Room. https://ktla.com/entertainment/ktla-honors-sam-rubins-life-and-legacy/?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=facebook.com

  14. I do think the way they do news (a mix of local news, national news, weather, celebrity news, police pursuits, and fun banter) just works for the all day news format. It also helps that their news is properly funded. This isn't some broke Sinclair station producing 16 hours of news a day, they have the staff and resources to cover LA news properly. Yeah if you watch it all day long non stop it could get boring but you could say the same thing watching hours and hours of court shows or talk shows all day. They cover serious news when needed yet allow talent to have fun in a way that is unparalleled to any other station. Their talent is so beloved by viewers that they can basically do a whole hour of them having an unscripted conversation (Off The Clock) and it works. It's also worth pointing out that 15 years ago they only had a morning newscast and hour at 10:00pm. Daytime used to be full of Jerry Springer, Maury, Steve Wilkos, and other conflict talkers. Repeats of Family Guy aired in the evening. They slowly built up over the years starting with news at times when other stations had entertainment programming and then expanding to compete against the other newscasts head on.

  15. A competent candidate should be prepared for fallacies and be prepared to fact check their opponent themselves from the lectern with their rebuttal time. But that's just my PoliSci degree talking. Personally, not having the mics muted makes for a more entertaining debate (but again, that's the PoliSci talking. For the average viewer, yes- mute the mics).

  16. John will co-host pre-coverage of the debate. Not sure who the other co-host will be. Could be Maurice (or Gayle or someone else). Brennan needs to remember that she is a moderator and avoid taking, let's just say, an argumentative/combative approach.
